Ten amazing inventions from ancient times

Ten amazing inventions from ancient times

Ten amazing inventions from ancient times

During the growth of ancient civilizations, technology was the result of incredible advances in engineering in ancient times.  These advances in the history of technology stimulated societies to adopt new ways of living and governance. However, many ancient inventions were forgotten, lost to the pages of history, only to be re-invented millennia later. Here we feature ten of the best examples of ancient technology and inventions that demonstrate the ingenuity of our ancient ancestors.

The ancient invention of the steam engine by the Hero of Alexandria

Heron Alexandrinus, otherwise known as the Hero of Alexandria, was a 1st century Greek mathematician and engineer who is known as the first inventor of the steam engine.  His steam powered device was called the aeolipile, named after Aiolos, God of the winds. The aeolipile consisted of a sphere positioned in such a way that it could rotate around its axis. Nozzles opposite each other would expel steam and both of the nozzles would generate a combined thrust resulting in torque, causing the sphere to spin around its axis. The rotation force sped up the sphere up to the point where the resistance from traction and air brought it to a stable rotation speed.

The steam was created by boiling water under the sphere – the boiler was connected to the rotating sphere through a pair of pipes that at the same time served as pivots for the sphere. The replica of Heron’s machine could rotate at 1,500 rounds per minute with a very low pressure of 1.8 pounds per square inch.  The remarkable device was forgotten and never used properly until 1577, when the steam engine was ‘re-invented’ by the philosopher, astronomer and engineer, Taqu al-Din.

Assyrian Nimrud lens the oldest telescope

The Nimrud lens is a 3,000-year-old piece of rock crystal, which was unearthed by Sir John Layard in 1850 at the Assyrian palace of Nimrud, in modern-day Iraq.  The Nimrud lens (also called the Layard lens) is made from natural rock crystal and is a slightly oval in shape.  It was roughly ground, perhaps on a lapidary wheel. It has a focal point about 11 centimetres from the flat side, and a focal length of about 12 cm.  This would make it equivalent to a 3× magnifying glass (combined with another lens, it could achieve much greater magnification). The surface of the lens has twelve cavities that were opened during grinding, which would have contained naptha or some other fluid trapped in the raw crystal.  Since its discovery over a century ago, scientists and historians have debated its use, with some suggesting it was used as a magnifying glass, and others maintaining it was a burning-glass used to start fires by concentrating sunlight.

However, prominent Italian professor Giovanni Pettinato proposed the lens was used by the ancient Assyrians as part of a telescope, which would explain how the Assyrians knew so much about astronomy. According to conventional perspectives, the telescope was invented by Dutch spectacle maker, Hans Lippershey in 1608 AD, and Galileo was the first to point it to the sky and use it to study the cosmos. But even Galileo himself noted that the 'ancients' were aware of telescopes long before him. While lenses were around before the Nimrud lens, Pettinato believes this was one of the first to be used in a telescope.

The Oldest Calendar in Scotland

Research carried out last year on an ancient site excavated by the National Trust for Scotland in 2004 revealed that it contained a sophisticated calendar system that is approximately 10,000 years old, making it the oldest calendar ever discovered in the world. The site – at Warren Field, Crathes, Aberdeenshire – contains a 50 metre long row of twelve pits which were created by Stone Age Britons and which were in use from around 8000 BC (the early Mesolithic period) to around 4,000 BC (the early Neolithic). The pits represent the months of the year as well as the lunar phases of the moon.

They were formed in a complex arc design in which each lunar month was divided into three roughly ten day weeks – representing the waxing moon, the full moon and the waning moon. It also allowed the observation of the mid-winter sunrise so that the lunar calendar could be recalibrated each year to bring it back in line with the solar year. The entire arc represents a whole year and may also reflect the movements of the moon across the sky.

Ancient Roman Concrete

Scientists studying the composition of Roman concrete, which has been submerged under the Mediterranean Sea for the last 2,000 years, discovered that it was superior to modern-day concrete in terms of durability and being less environmentally damaging. The Romans made concrete by mixing lime and volcanic rock. For underwater structures, the combination of lime and volcanic ash with seawater instantly triggered a chemical reaction in which the lime incorporated molecules into its structure and reacted with the ash to cement the whole mixture together.

Analysis of the concrete found that it produces a significantly different compound to modern day cement, which is an incredibly stable binder. In addition, the ancient concrete contains the ideal crystalline structure of Tobermorite, which has a greater strength and durability than the modern equivalent. Finally, microscopic studies identified other minerals in the ancient concrete which show potential application for high-performance concretes, including the encapsulation of hazardous wastes. "In the middle 20th century, concrete structures were designed to last 50 years," said scientist Paulo Monteiro said. "Yet Roman harbour installations have survived 2,000 years of chemical attack and wave action underwater.”

2000-year-old metal coatings superior

Research has shown that artisans and craftsmen 2,000 years ago used a form of ancient technology for applying thin films of metal to statues and other items, which was superior to today’s standards for producing DVDs, solar cells, electronic devices and other products. Fire gilding and silvering are age-old mercury-based processes used to coat the surface items such as jewels, statues and amulets with thin layers of gold or silver. From a technological point of view, what the ancient gilders achieved 2000 years ago, was to make the metal coatings incredibly thin, adherent and uniform, which saved expensive metals and improved its durability, something which has never been achieved to the same standard today.

Apparently without any knowledge about the chemical–physical processes, ancient craftsmen systematically manipulated metals to create spectacular results. They developed a variety of techniques, including using mercury like a glue to apply thin films of metals to objects. The findings demonstrate that there was a far higher level of understanding and knowledge of advanced concepts and techniques in our ancient past than what they are given credit for.

The incredible 2000-year-old earthquake detector

Although we still cannot accurately predict earthquakes, we have come a long way in detecting, recording, and measuring seismic shocks. Many don’t realise that this process began nearly 2000 years ago, with the invention of the first seismoscope in 132 AD by a Chinese astronomer, mathematician, engineer, and inventor called Zhang (‘Chang’) Heng.  The device was remarkably accurate in detecting earthquakes from afar, and did not rely on shaking or movement in the location where the device was situated.

Zhang's seismoscope was a giant bronze vessel, resembling a samovar almost 6 feet in diameter. Eight dragons snaked face-down along the outside of the barrel, marking the primary compass directions. In each dragon's mouth was a small bronze ball. Beneath the dragons sat eight bronze toads, with their broad mouths gaping to receive the balls. The sound of the ball striking one of the eight toads would alert observers to the earthquake and would give a rough indication of the earthquake's direction of origin.  In 2005, scientists in Zengzhou, China (which was also Zhang's hometown) managed to replicate Zhang's seismoscope and used it to detect simulated earthquakes based on waves from four different real-life earthquakes in China and Vietnam. The seismoscope detected all of them. As a matter of fact, the data gathered from the tests corresponded accurately with that gathered by modern-day seismometers!

Mythical sunstone used as ancient navigational device

An ancient Norse myth described a magical gem used to navigate the seas, which could reveal the position of the sun when hidden behind clouds or even before dawn or after sunset. Now it appears the myth is in fact true. In March 2013, a team of scientists announced that a unique calcite crystal, which was found in the wreck of an Elizabethan ship sunk off the Channel Islands, contains properties consistent with the legendary Viking sunstone and that shards of the crystal can indeed act as a remarkably precise navigational aid.

According to the researchers, the principle behind the sunstone relies on its unusual property of creating a double refraction of sunlight, even when it is obscured by cloud or fog. By turning the crystal in front of the human eye until the darkness of the two shadows are equal, the sun's position can be pinpointed with remarkable accuracy.

The Baghdad Battery

The Baghdad Battery, sometimes referred to as the Parthian Battery, is a clay pot which encapsulates a copper cylinder. Suspended in the centre of this cylinder—but not touching it—is an iron rod. Both the copper cylinder and the iron rod are held in place with an asphalt plug. These artifacts (more than one was found) were discovered during the 1936 excavations of the old village Khujut Rabu, near Baghdad.

The village is considered to be about 2000 years old, and was built during the Parthian period (250BC to 224 AD). Although it is not known exactly what the use of such a device would have been, the name ‘Baghdad Battery’, comes from one of the prevailing theories established in 1938 when Wilhelm Konig, the German archaeologist who performed the excavations, examined the battery and concluded that this device was an ancient electric battery.

After the Second World War, Willard Gray, an American working at the General Electric High Voltage Laboratory in Pittsfield, built replicas and, filling them with an electrolyte, found that the devices could produce 2 volts of electricity. The question remains, if it really was a battery, what was it used to power?

1,600-year-old goblet shows that the Romans used nanotechnology

The Lycurgus Cup, as it is known due to its depiction of a scene involving King Lycurgus of Thrace, is a 1,600-year-old jade green Roman chalice that changes colour depending on the direction of the light upon it. It baffled scientists ever since the glass chalice was acquired by the British Museum in the 1950s. They could not work out why the cup appeared jade green when lit from the front but blood red when lit from behind.

The mystery was solved in 1990, when researchers in England scrutinized broken fragments under a microscope and discovered that the Roman artisans were nanotechnology pioneers: they had impregnated the glass with particles of silver and gold, ground down until they were as small as 50 nanometres in diameter, less than one-thousandth the size of a grain of table salt. The work was so precise that there is no way that the resulting effect was an accident. In fact, the exact mixture of the metals suggests that the Romans had perfected the use of nanoparticles.  When hit with light, electrons belonging to the metal flecks vibrate in ways that alter the colour depending on the observer’s position.

The ancient Antikythera mechanism

The Antikythera mechanism was discovered in 1900 during the recovery of a shipwreck off of the Greek island, Antikythera, in waters 60 meters deep. It is a metallic device which consists of a complex combination of gears, and dates back to the 2nd century BCE. The Antikythera mechanism is one of the most amazing mechanical devices discovered from the ancient world.

For decades, scientists have utilized the latest technology in attempts to decipher its functionality; however, due to its complexity, its true purpose and function remained elusive. But in the last few years, a number of scientists appear to have solved the mystery as to precisely how this incredible piece of technology once worked. Peter Lynch, professor of meteorology at University College Dublin, explains: “The mechanism was driven by a handle that turned a linked system of more than 30 gear wheels…The gears were coupled to pointers on the front and back of the mechanism, showing the positions of the sun, moon and planets as they moved through the zodiac. An extendable arm with a pin followed a spiral groove, like a record player stylus. A small sphere, half white and half black, indicated the phase of the moon.

Even more impressive was the prediction of solar and lunar eclipses.” Amazingly, the device even included a dial to indicate which of the pan-Hellenic games would take place each year, with the Olympics occurring every fourth year.  Just one small cog out of 30 remains a mystery and it is hoped that further research can place this last piece in the puzzle.

The Most Amazing Ancient Objects in the World?

The Most Amazing Ancient Objects in the World?

They’re evidence of extraterrestrial visitation, time travelers or lost civilizations like Atlantis – or perhaps they’re here to show us that some ancient peoples were far more advanced than we think. It’s hard not to get caught up in the mystery and intrigue of these puzzling and often bizarre ancient objects, most of which simply can’t be explained by modern science.

1. The Antikythera Mechanism

The world’s oldest computer predates Bill Gates by only about 2,000 years. In fact, the absolutely mind-boggling Antikythera Mechanism – a corroded clocklike object found among the ruins of a sunken ship – may prove that advanced scientific technology existed far earlier than we ever thought possible. Scientists have since discovered that this mysterious Greek invention predicted solar eclipses, organized the calendar in four-year cycles, and may well be linked to renowned astrologer and engineer Archimedes. Though no other such mechanisms have ever been found, experts believe that many more made around the same time in 100 B.C.E. once existed.

The mechanism was finally reconstructed after using advanced X-ray and other scanning techniques to examine it.

The Reconstruction

2. The Baigong Pipes

“Alien toilet found in China”. This is just one of many absurd headlines seen on the internet concerning the undoubtedly bizarre Baigong Pipes, rusty red iron pipes that lead into a pyramid atop Mount Baigong from a nearby salt water lake. What’s so strange about the pipes? Well, for one thing, they’re in an area that is completely inhospitable to man – no civilization is ever known to have lived there.

They’re uniform in size and seem to have been created in an intentional pattern. No clear explanation exists for the presence of these pipes, and scientists don’t seem to agree on whether they could be natural occurrences.

The Baigong Pipes are described as a sophisticated system of metal pipes, buried in geology in such a way that precludes the possibility of having been installed in modern times. They are located on Mt. Baigong in the Qinghai province of China, about 40 kilometers southwest of Delingha. Most accounts describe a pyramid-shaped outcropping on the mountain, and the cave containing the pipes is on this pyramid.

80 meters from the mouth of this cave is a salt lake (the twin of an adjacent freshwater lake), and more pipes can be found poking up along the shore.

Most of the information you can find online about the Baigong Pipes appears to be originally sourced from a 2002 article from the 'Xinhua News Agency', talking about preparations by a team of scientists about to embark to this remote area to study the pipes. "Nature is harsh here," said one.

"There are no residents let alone modern industry in the area, only a few migrant herdsmen to the north of the mountain."

3. The Roman Dodecahedra

These fist-sized bronze Roman artifacts found in France, Switzerland and Germany pose a fascinating problem for archaeologists: they just don’t have a clear purpose, but many are covered in symbols, some undecipherable and others relating to the Zodiac. But for all the speculation on their use, including that they may have been surveying instruments, some experts believe the Roman dodecahedra were merely decorative candlesticks.

4. Baghdad Battery

What need would ancient people have for batteries when electronics did not yet exist? [Electroplating jewellery among others – New Illuminate ed.] Found outside Baghdad, Iraq in 1936, the Baghdad Battery is a small clay jar containing an iron rod suspended in a copper cylinder which is soldered shut and sealed with asphalt. Replicas that have been made since then can produce small mounts of electricity, proving the battery’s capabilities...

5. The Piri Reis Map

Probably the most famous 'Out of the place Artifact' in the world! Compiled in 1513 from military intelligence by the Ottoman-Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis. The half of the map which survives shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Various Atlantic islands including the Azores and Canary Islands are depicted, as is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan. The map has been used to claim an ancient knowledge of an ice-free Antarctica, transmitted either from extra-terrestrials or an Ice Age civilization.

Short Documentary from History Channel about the Antikythera Mechanism, the Baghdad Battery and Piri Reis Map:

6. The Voynich Manuscript

The Voynich manuscript is a handwritten book thought to have been written in the early 15th century and comprising about 240 vellum pages, most with illustrations. Although many possible authors have been proposed, the author, script, and language remain unknown. It has been described as "the world's most mysterious manuscript".

Generally presumed to be some kind of ciphertext, the Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. Yet it has defied all decipherment attempts, becoming a historical cryptology cause célèbre. The mystery surrounding it has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript a subject of both fanciful theories and novels.

Because nobody was able to decrypt the writing code used in this manuscript and because many drawings seem to follow a sacred geometry pattern, many speculate its origin to be extraterrestrial.

7. The Giant Stone Spheres of Costa Rica
(and all over the planet)

They appear to be flawlessly round, ranging in size from just a few centimeters to over 6.6 feet in diameter, and are found all over the Diquis Delta and Isla de Cano in Costa Rica. Weighing up to 16 tons, it’s hard to imagine how humans could have moved these gigantic sculptures hewn from hard granodiorite – considering that the nearest quarry for that material is over 50 miles away from where the sculptures were found. Over three hundred of them are scattered across Costa Rica, but we’ll never know why – the people who made them back in 1,000 C.E. are long gone and had no written records.

Ancient Artifacts that Challenge Modern Thinking

Ancient Artifacts that Challenge Modern Thinking
THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM

THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM
THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM INNER WORKINGS
Dated to 80 A.D, probably used as calendar and astronomical calculator for the motions of stars and planets, the so-called ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM is a very sophisticated device that consists of 30 toothed wheels of diameter from 9 to 132 mm (each being able to rotate at a different speed), dials and scaled metal plates with inscriptions related to the signs of the zodiac, and names of the planets. The engraved signs inform about the equinoxes, months, winds and constellations in their different phases. This device was created 1,000 years before the gearwheel was (supposedly) invented.
THE BATTERY OF BABYLON
THE BATTERY OF BABYLON WORKINGSTHE BATTERY OF BABYLON

This battery was unearthed in Khujut Rabu, in the ruins of a Parthian village outside Baghdad in 1938 by German archaeologist Wilhelm Konig. It is a five-inch-long (13 cm) clay jar containing a copper cylinder and its edge was soldered with a 60-40 lead/tin alloy; the bottom was capped with a crimped-in copper disk and held in place with asphalt or bitumen. Another insulating layer of asphalt sealed the top and also protected an iron bar suspended into the center of the cylinder. This is known as the Baghdad Battery and is about 2,000 years old. A dozen other similar batteries were unearthed in Iraq.
Most sources date the batteries to around 200 BC - in the Parthian era, circa 250 BC to AD 225. However the Parthians were skilled warriors rather than technologists and their scientific achievements remain largely unknown. It would appear that they inherited these batteries from one of the earliest known civilizations. According to experts, after being filled with an acid or alkaline liquid (like lemon juice) the device could create an electric charge. It is believed that this old battery might have been used to electroplate silver, but this is only one theory. It’s important to emphasize that electric batteries were (supposedly) not invented until 1799 by Alessandro Volta.

MYSTERIOUS SCREW in CHINESE STONE

MYSTERIOUS CHINA STONE

An uncommon stone imbedded with screw-threaded metal bar from a collector in Lanzhou, Mr. Zhilin Wang. He found this stone on a field research trip to the Mazong Mountain area located on the border of Gansu and Xijiang provinces. The pear-shaped stone is extremely hard and has a mysterious black color. It is about 8 x 7 cm and weighs 466 grams. The most surprising as[ect of the stone is the imbedded 6 cm cone-shaped metal bar which bears clear screw threads.
The stone is one of the most valuable in China and in the world. There are many hypotheses about the formation of this stone, but all seem incredible. The screw-threaded metal bar is tightly enclosed in the black lithic material. Moreover, the screw thread width remains consistent from the thick end to the thin end, instead of varying due to the growth of organisms. Is this a relic from a prehistoric civilization?

ANCIENT GLIDER FROM EGYPT

ANCIENT GLIDER AIRPLANE FROM EGYPT

In 1898 a small wooden, winged object was found in the tomb of Pa-di-Imen in north Saqqara, Egypt. The model has the exact proportions of a very advanced form of "pusher-glider"; however it was identified as a "bird model". Made of very light sycamore the craft weighs 0.5 oz. with straight and aerodynamically shaped wings spanning about 7 inches. It looks like modern-day aircraft though it is 2,000 years old. According to analysis the object is aerodynamically sound.

The mechanical-appearing features of this object suggest a highly sophisticated level of aerodynamics and construction. The objects are very old and small, approximately 2 inches long, made of gold and estimated to be AT LEAST 1,000 years old. According to archaeologists the artifacts depict animals and were classified as Sinu - a pre-Inca culture from A.D. 500 to 800. To aeronautical engineers these objects look more like airplanes with delta-shaped wings. So in 1997 they built scaled-up versions of the object to the exact specifications of the prototype with the simple addition of an engine and propeller. The flight test was successful. The radio controlled aircraft flew, performing airborne loops, rolls and other maneuvers, and then performed perfect landing.
According to Dr. Ivan Sanderson who studied the artifacts, these look too "mechanical", like an airplane - not a natural object. Other similar objects have been discovered in Costa Rica, Venezuela and Peru.
CRYSTAL SKULL UNEARTHED AT THE ANCIENT MAYAN CITY
CRYSTAL SKULL MAYANCRYSTAL SKULL MAYAN

A human sized and shaped clear quartz skull, weighing 11.7 lbs in two pieces with a separate jaw, was discovered in Lubaantum (now in Belize) in 1924, in the ruins of a Mayan City by F. A. Mitchell-Hedges. This skull is currently near Toronto, Canada with Anna Mitchell-Hedges, his adopted daughter. The skull is an almost absolute copy of a human skull except it is more circular at the temples and has a handle-like form in the cheekbones. It's ancient. The amazing thing is that even under a microscope no tool marks can be found.
500,000 YEAR OLD SPARK PLUG - THE COSO ARTIFACT

THE COSO ARTIFACT - 500,000 YEAR OLD SPARK PLUG

This was unearthed in the Coso Mountains, California, by someone looking for unusual rocks. One of these pieces of rock contained remains of some kind of device. Beneath the outer layer of hardened clay, pebbles and fossil inclusions was a hexagonal shaped layer of a substance resembling wood, softer than agate or jasper. This layer formed a casing around a three-quarter inch wide cylinder made of solid white porcelain or ceramic, and in the center of the cylinder is the two millimeter shaft of a shiny metal core, about .08 inch (2 millimeters) in diameter. Surrounding the ceramic cylinder are rings of copper, mostly corroded. Also embedded in the rock, though separate from the cylinder, are two more man-made items that look like a nail and a washer. The rock, in which the artifact resembling a spark plug was found, was dated to about 500,000 years old. Those who manufactured this artifact had to possess an advanced technology.

SPIRAL SHAPED MICRO OBJECTSPIRAL SHAPED MICRO OBJECT SPIRAL SHAPED MICRO OBJECT

In the years 1991-1993, gold prospectors on the small river Narada on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains found unusual, mostly spiral-shaped objects. The size of these things ranges from a maximum of 3 cm (1.2 in.) down to an incredible 0.003 mm, about 1/10,000th of an inch! To date, these inexplicable artifacts have been found in their thousands at various sites near the rivers Narada, Kozhim, and Balbanyu, and also by two smaller streams named Vtvisty and Lapkhevozh, mostly at depths between 3 and 12 meters (10 and 40 ft.)
The spiral-form objects are composed of various metals: the larger ones are of copper, while the small and very small ones are of the rare metals tungsten and molybdenum. Tungsten has a high atomic weight, and is also very dense, with a melting point of 3410 deg. C (6100 deg. F). It is used principally for the hardening of special steels, and in unalloyed form for the filaments of light bulbs. Molybdenum also has a high density and a respectable melting point of 2650 deg. C (4740 deg. F). This metal too is used for hardening steels and giving them corrosion-
resistant properties, these being used principally for highly-stressed weapon parts and vehicle armor. All tests carried out to date these objects to around 20,000 years old...

THE FIVE ARCHAIC PLATONIC SOLIDS

THE FIVE PLATONIC SOLIDS

Hundreds of carved stone spheres, roughly three inches in diameter, believed to date to around 2000 BC, have been found in Scotland. Some are carved with lines corresponding to the edges of regular polyhedra.  Roughly half have 6 knobs --- like the one at right above --- but the others range from three to 160 knobs.  The more mathematically regular ones do not appear to have had a special importance.
In addition to the 12-knob dodecahedral form shown in the center and just to its right above, there are also ones with 14 knobs, corresponding to a form with two opposite hexagons, each surrounded by six pentagons.  Nonetheless, the dodecahedron appears here long before the Greeks wrote of it.  The function of these stones is unknown and so it is unclear whether to list them under the category of ‘art’, but many are intricately carved with spirals or cross-hatching on the faces.  The material varies from easily carved sandstone and serpentine to difficult hard granite and quartzite.

This photo is of the stunning Ta Prohm Temple deep in the jungles of Cambodia. This temple is the work of the remarkable Khmer civilization which lasted from the 800’s AD until the 1400s AD. The temple is covered with the most intricate carvings. The reader who was visiting the area noticed very distinct and clear images that seem to depict a Stegosaurus.
THE LONDON ARTIFACT

THE LONDON ARTIFACT

This is a hammer made from an alloy of iron which is very modern technology, encased in "10 million" year old rock which has formed around it. "This ancient tool has a simple form, similar to the type of hammer that is still common in Germany today. The handle is a very hard petrified crystal with an intact structure. It was possible to ascertain that the interior of the handle had partly turned into porous coal.
ANCIENT METAL PIPES IN CHINESE LAKE/MOUNTAIN

ANCIENT METAL PIPES IN CHINESE LAKE

ANCIENT METAL PIPES IN CHINESE LAKE

Mysterious iron pipes at the foot of Mount Baigong, located in the depths of the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, have roused concern. What is astonishing is that inside is a half-pipe about 40 centimeters in diameter tilting from the top to the inner end of the cave. Another pipe of the same diameter goes into the earth with only its top visible above the ground. At the opening of the cave there are a dozen pipes of a diameter between 10 and 40 centimeters running straight into the mount, showing high fixing technique.

About 80 meters away from the caves is the shimmering Toson Lake, on whose beach 40 meters away many iron pipes can be found scattered on sands and rocks. They run in an east-west direction with a diameter between 2 and 4.5 centimeters.

More strange is that there are also some pipes in the lake, some reaching above the water’s surface and some buried below, with similar shapes and thicknesses to those on the beach.

A group of nine Chinese scientists will go to west China's Qinghai Province to closely examine the relics. According to Qin Jianwen, head of the publicity department of the Delingha government, scraps were once taken to a local smelter for analysis. The result shows that they are made up of 30 percent ferric oxide with a large amount of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide. Eight percent of the content could not be identified.

"The large content of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide is a result of long interaction between iron and sandstone, which means the pipes must be very old," said Liu Shaolin, the engineer who did the analysis.

"This result has made the site even more mysterious," Qin said. "Nature is harsh here. There are no residents let alone modern industry in the area, only a few migrant herdsmen to the north of the mountain."

THE PIRI REIS MAP

THE PIRI REIS MAP

In 1929 a group of historians found an amazing map drawn on a gazelle skin. Research showed that it was a genuine document drawn in 1513 by Piri Reis, a famous admiral of the Turkish fleet in the sixteenth century. His passion was cartography. His high rank within the Turkish navy allowed him to have privileged access to the Imperial Library of Constantinople. The Turkish admiral admits in a series of notes on the map that he compiled and copied the data from a large number of source maps, some of which dated back to the fourth century BC or earlier.

The Controversy... The Piri Reis map shows the western coast of Africa, the eastern coast of South America and the northern coast of Antarctica. The northern coastline of Antarctica is perfectly detailed. The most puzzling feature however is not so much how Piri Reis managed to draw such an accurate map of the Antarctic region 300 years before it was discovered, but that the map shows the coastline under the ice. Geological evidence confirms that the latest date Queen Maud Land could have been charted in an ice-free state is 4000 BC.
