Physicalism: A False View of the World

Physicalism: A False View of the World

argonne.jpg

Physicalism is the philosophical claim that only what is physical is real, where physical means: To be found or inferred by measurement and reason as existing in the world observable by the outer senses (mainly sight, hearing and touch).

Physicalism is distinct from physics. Physics is (a) an activity based upon observing the world (by means of the outer senses), theorizing, experimenting and testing and (b) a body of knowledge which consists of truths established by this activity. This essay does not deny the truth of any established proposition of physics.

Physicalism, on the other hand, is the ontological position which asserts that only that which is the subject of physics can be held to be real, or in other words, that reality consist only of what can be observed by means of the outer senses or can be shown to exist by the investigations of physicists. If physical reality does not comprise the whole of what is real then it is possible to accept the truths of physics while asserting the falsity of physicalism.

There is no generally accepted accurate ism-word to describe the dominant, modern, secular (non-religious) view of the world. "Materialism" comes close but "matter" as understood in modern physics is far less "material" than was previously thought. Materialism in the strict sense is the view that only what is material is real, where material means: composed of matter. But what is matter? Even if we equate matter with the totality of all the atoms and subatomic particles existing in the universe this still leaves electromagnetic radiation (x-rays, gamma rays, light, etc.), which has observable effects, and thus is real but is not material. Thus it is clear that materialism in the strict sense is false. When mention is made of the "materialist" view prevalent in the modern world what is being referred to is the physicalist view as defined in the preceding paragraph.

But most people are unaware of the distinction between material and non-material physical reality, and for such people there is no difference between physicalism and materialism. For them the only reality is what they can see and touch (with hearing and smell indicating the presence of something to be seen or touched), and if they think further about this they generally accept (if they are not believers in some religious view of the world) what they are told by the scientific establishment: that there is no reality other than atoms (and subatomic particles) and radiation.

A major objection to physicalism is that it cannot explain the existence of consciousness. Since consciousness indisputably exists (as shown by the fact that you are now conscious of reading this) physicalists can only assert that somehow consciousness "emerges" in "sufficiently complex" physical systems from the atoms, subatomic particles and electromagnetic radiation which is all that a physicalist allows to be real.

In the words of Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), "Human thoughts and emotions emerge from exceedingly complex interconnections of physical entities within the brain." (Italics in the original.) Physicalists thus label consciousness as an "emergent property" of complex physical systems (they have to italicize "emergent" so as to slip this past one's critical faculties). But to label it in this way is not to explain how this "emergence" could possibly occur.

Physicalists can talk as much as they like about neural structures, resonant patterns of brain activity and the like, but in fact they have no explanation for the "emergence" of consciousness from "complex interconnections of physical entities within the brain." This is actually an article of faith, comparable to Christians' faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A Christian who understands their faith says, "I have chosen to believe in Jesus resurrected from the dead." A physicalist also chooses to believe, that consciousness "emerges" from complex networks of neurons, but is usually not aware that they have chosen to believe.

Attempts by physicalists to explain consciousness are actually attempts to explain it away. "Consciousness explained" by a physicalist is really "consciousness denied". Physicalists must accept the dilemma that either consciousness does not "really" exist or that the existence of consciousness is inexplicable. Neither horn of the dilemma is satisfactory.

If, however, consciousness is a fundamental and irreducible quality of reality (so that a form of consciousness goes all the way down, even to molecules and atoms) then the existence of conscious beings such as ourselves is not a total mystery. But if a physicalist allows the possibility that physical reality is inherently conscious (which idea most physicalists would reject) then the way is open to the idea that there is some reality beyond physical reality (that is, beyond the existence of atoms, subatomic particles and electromagnetic radiation), and to move in this direction is to abandon physicalism.

No-one who follows a religion in their idea of how the world is is a physicalist. Religious people always believe in something which is not part of physical reality, often a "supreme being" which they call "God", "Allah", "Ishvara", etc. But it does not follow that someone who has a view of the world other than physicalism must have a religious view of the world. The falsity of physicalism does not imply the truth of any religious doctrine. It is entirely possible to deny physicalism without being in any sense religious.

The antithesis of physicalism (the view that physicalism is false) might be called spiritualism, but unfortunately this term is often used to refer to the 19th C. fascination with "spirits", in particular, with the invocation of them in seances. So we shall have to use the term "spiritual view of the world", or "spiritual view" for short.

The spiritual view is that there is a reality (or there are realities) which can be experienced and known which is (or are) not within the world observable by the outer senses. This view does not in itself state what exists within spiritual reality, and thus it does not entail the existence of "God" or of gods. What exists in spiritual reality is something to be discovered by experience, and which can be so discovered.

Science is not incompatible with the spiritual view if by science is understood a quest for knowledge of what is real. If there is a non-physical reality then a true scientist will wish to know about it. Modern natural scientists often assume that physicalism is true, and thereby exclude the possibility of knowledge of a spiritual reality. Such natural scientists are thus not true scientists. A natural scientist may state that only physical reality is of interest to him, but he is not justified in claiming that science can properly concern itself only with physical reality.

In order to show that physicalism is false we need only show that we may experience and know something which is not found or inferred by measurement and reason as existing in the world observable by the outer senses. This must be something which can be experienced and known by many people. It is not enough for someone to say, "I know God exists because He speaks to me." Such experience may be convincing to the person who has the experience but it does not prove that "God" exists.

There is no largest prime number; this has been known since the time of Euclid (who provided a proof). We know this to be true, but prime numbers do not exist in the physical world, therefore physicalism is false. If it be objected that there are many instances of three apples, five oranges, etc., it can be replied that there is a finite number of objects within physical reality and, whatever this number is, there is a larger prime number. I am not suggesting that prime numbers exist in some kind of Platonic heaven. I do suggest, however, that the mental ability of humans to conceive of prime numbers (and of infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and the like) cannot be explained by Darwinian natural selection, and is evidence that a higher intelligence is expressed in humans (or at least, in some of them).

Consider also the case of beauty in music. The music of J.S. Bach has universal appeal. Much of Bach's music is not just pleasant to listen to, it is beautiful, sometimes profoundly so. The same is true of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler and Puccini - there is no need to give examples; millions of people know the beauty to be found in their music. But this beauty does not exist in the physical world.

There is no system of atoms, molecules, electromagnetic radiation, etc., however complex, which is the beauty which can be observed in, say, a Bach cantata, the slow movement of a Mozart piano concerto, Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony or a Puccini aria. This beauty is not perceived by the ear, but by the mind; we are conscious of it; we perceive it not by any outer sense but by an inner sense. And, on this planet, it is only humans whose consciousness is sufficiently developed to be able to perceive beauty at this level. The properties of our bodies can be explained by Darwinian natural selection but not the properties of our minds.

Human consciousness can have as its objects of awareness what is beyond the physical world. Since the physical world is the world in which our bodies move, and that in which we interact bodily, consciousness of objects in non-physical reality tends to be private. But if enough people can agree on the details of an experience of something which is obviously not an object in the physical world, then that something acquires an intersubjective reality, or in other words, an objectivity. For example, a rainbow does not exist as a system of atoms, molecules, etc., yet a group of people (hundreds even) may all see the same rainbow. Of course, the rainbow can be "explained" in terms of sunlight being refracted by millions of water droplets, but this simply explains the pattern of electromagnetic radiation striking the retinas of the people seeing the rainbow - it does not explain their experience of the rainbow (because physicalism cannot explain consciousness).

People observing a rainbow can agree on the order of the colors (from indigo through green to red), whether it is a double rainbow, etc. Rainbows, of course, are intangible, and do not occupy any specific volume of 3-dimensional physical space, even though they can be observed as occurring in physical space. Thus we tend to think of them more as illusions, and rainbows do not themselves show that physicalism is false.

But they do illustrate the principle that reality is what is intersubjectively verifiable. Rainbows are real, but are not physical objects. Thus there may be other things which are real, because they are (or can be) experienced by many people, but which are not physical.

In order to experience these other things a change in brain chemistry is required. The human brain normally functions in a biochemically standard manner which is oriented toward survival in the physical world. This mode of functioning emphasizes the contributions of the outer senses (particularly sight) and motor coordination and ability (when a monkey, dashing along a path, runs into an object it must very quickly decide whether or not this is another monkey, and in either case what to do about it).

Human brains, however, have some strange abilities, which are triggered by a change in brain chemistry. A human brain exposed to LSD, psilocybin, mescaline or some such substance, functions in a way which allows forms of consciousness to arise which are radically different to everyday consciousness. Someone who has not directly experienced these alternative forms of consciousness can have only a very vague idea of them, however much they read about them. In these altered states an expanded consciousness is possible - an expansion beyond the everyday consciousness which is focussed on (and largely constrained by) input from the outer bodily senses. One's mind can wander into strange realms.

Shamans are trained to do this; they do not so much "wander" as travel purposely. And in their travels they meet and communicate with spirits, which often appear to them in the form of animals. Shamans have for many millennia used psychoactive plants (peyote, datura, Amanita mushrooms, etc.) to induce states of consciousness which allow them to enter this non-ordinary reality and communicate with spirits, who impart information to them (when and where to hunt, where lost objects may be found, which plants are good for which purposes, etc.).

Despite the evidence collected by anthropologists who have studied shamanic cultures, physicalists tend to deny that shamans enter a non-ordinary reality, simply because it is inconsistent with their physicalist assumptions. In this denial they are betraying their vocation as scientists, because a true scientist seeks to know all of reality, and to know it by experience and observation (supplemented by reason). To discount anthropological data because it is inconsistent with one's assumptions is clearly unscientific.

Physicalists may, if they wish, enter the same non-ordinary states that shamans do, and by the same means (although lacking in the experience and training that a shaman possesses). Despite benighted, draconian, pernicious and contemptible laws criminalizing the use of psychoactive substances, it is still possible to partake of the ayahuasca brew, to find psilocybin mushrooms sprouting from cow pies, and to obtain by discreet means a variety of psychedelics (since there are many people who know the value of these substances and risk their liberty in order to assist others to gain the experience of non-ordinary reality).

The most powerful psychedelic (at least, in my experience) is N,N-dimethyltryptamine (or DMT for short), a substance which allows anyone to prove to themselves the complete falsity of the physicalist assumption that all reality consists of systems of atoms, sub-atomic particles and electromagnetic radiation. DMT provides access to a realm which is so totally weird that it is inconceivable that it could be part of the physicalist's limited reality. It also allows experience of a realm inhabited by discarnate entities who are self-evidently independently existing intelligent beings, but whose place of existence clearly cannot be this physical world.

These beings have been reported by many people. It is not a matter of a few "wild-eyed crazies" muttering about "self-transforming machine-elves". By now hundreds, probably thousands, of people have experienced these entities (first brought to public attention by Terence McKenna; see here, here, here and here for reports), and all agree that they, and the space they inhabit, are totally weird (and the further you go the weirder it gets). Thus these entities have intersubjective validity - lots of people agree about them, or at least, that they exist. And lots more would be able to report that they exist if DMT were legal. It is mainly because psychedelic experience exposes the falsity of the mainstream definition of reality that the use of psychedelics is prohibited by those who benefit from keeping the mass of people in a state of spiritual ignorance (thereby making it easier to keep them in a state of involuntary servitude).

Terence and Dennis McKenna stated already in 1975 (in The Invisible Landscape):

The idea of the simultaneous coexistence of an alien dimension all around us is as strange an idea in the context of modern society as it must have been to the first shamans, whose experiments with psychoactive plants would have soon brought them to the same tryptamine doorway. What is the nature of the invisible landscape beyond that doorway? ... If the world beyond the doorway can be given consensual validation of the sort extended to the electron and the black hole ... then our own circumscribed historical struggle will be subject to whole new worlds of possibility.

Here's an extract from one of the reports linked to above:

I am outside in a very futuristic patterned garden with bright coloured, very small, dots over everything, which are all flowing in certain directions. No plants as such but garden nonetheless. There is a corridor with a very tangible ambience, one can feel the space around. It now appears to be a temple structure of some futuristic sort, like some space age Hindu/Mayan temple with the walls displaying architecture similiar to the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan except the walls are inverted to angle outward with the terraces reversed. It seems very real but also very fleeting, changing rapidly. There are beings that are here the whole time from the very moment I entered the trip right to the moments of trying to get out of it. They seemed to have been waiting for me. ... They were very colourful, had strange relentless grins, very slender and could move their arms around at strange angles. Despite the high-frequency quantised pulsing in which they moved, there was still a very fluid flow to it. ...

These beings just kept on grinning. They knew that I knew that this was the price paid to enter their "special" world. They were very keen to show me their magic. I would try to look away but each time I tried, they would stop my breath and do some amazing transformational magic which I simply can't describe and [which] was so amazing that I was prevented by awe from looking away. Sorry, I can't even hold it in thought for more than a fleeting moment. It was very beautiful and totally bizarre. It was as though the strength of magic taking place was way too much. Solid forms of colour and shape, way beyond the geometric forms. In your face. They kept on fanning out this magic like opening one of those decorated hand fans. They knew that this was the only place that I could experience it. Not even in memory could I see this stuff. I couldn't take it back with me. They were going for it big time. It was a really solid reality but constantly changing.

For over 200 cases of DMT users reporting encounters with intelligent entities see 340 DMT Trip Reports. These reports show that these entities are experienced as existing in some kind of space, but it is clearly not the space of ordinary experience. It has been compared to 4-dimensional space, and has been called hyperspace for lack of a better word. Hyperspace, and the DMT entities found within it, constitute a fundamental challenge to those philosophers who espouse physicalism in any form.

There are three positions which a philosopher can take with regard to hyperspace and the DMT entities:

1.     Hyperspace is no more real than the space experienced in dreams, and the so-called entities within it are no more real than people experienced in dreams (regarded as merely subjective mental phenomena).

2.     Hyperspace is real and is not part of physical space; thus its inhabitants are non-physical.

3.     Hyperspace is real and is fundamentally of the same stuff as the physical world; both are physical but are experienced in very different ways.

Given the (presumed) near-total lack of experience of the DMT state among contemporary philosophers, it is almost certain that #1 would be their overwhelming response. But this is, basically, an argument from ignorance (since these philosophers have no direct knowledge of the DMT state), and it rules out a priori a body of evidence (namely, the testimony of many people who have experienced the DMT entities) simply because that evidence is inconsistent with commonly held assumptions.

Actually it is impossible for anyone who has not experienced Level III of the DMT experience to imagine it, however much they have read about it or talked to those who have had the experience. This level of the experience is of a nature which is radically different from everyday experience, dream experience and even most other psychedelic experience (having taken a few LSD trips does not enable one to imagine a full-on DMT experience). Thus no-one who has not experienced DMT hyperspace is qualified to say anything about it, except to discuss its philosophical implications based on the reports of those others who actually know what they are talking about.

#3 is possible for a physicalist (albeit an unconventional one), but requires an explanation of how the DMT entities can be claimed to be composed of the same stuff (atoms, molecules, etc.) as the entities within the ordinary physical world. Perhaps (since, for a physicalist, 'energy' is the only alternative to quarks, mesons, protons, atoms, etc.) they are not composed of anything 'material' but are 'energy beings' of some kind? It is likely, however, that the nature of those entities is, in our present state of intellectual development, totally incomprehensible by us. In the words of the renowned British biologist J.B.S. Haldane (himself a great psychonaut), they are "not only queerer than we suppose but queerer than we can suppose."

If #1 is rejected as being based on ignorance and prejudice, and if #3 is not a defensible position, that leaves #2. It makes sense if we consider the hypothesis that what we perceive as the physical world is actually a part of a larger reality (or more exactly is a bubble within a larger reality, with our ordinary experience of physical reality being an experience entirely within that bubble and subject to limitations imposed by it), and that it is the non-physical part of that larger reality which we experience directly in the DMT state.

It is possible that this physical world is actually an incubator of souls, in the sense that, just as the womb is an incubator of our physical body, our life in this world enables the development of a mental body which can persist beyond the dissolution of the physical one; and that just as birth is a transition from the womb to a higher-dimensional and vastly more complex world, so death (if the mental body is sufficiently developed) is a transition from the world of physical life to the higher-dimensional and vastly more complex world of the DMT entities.

Or it may be that this physical world is constructed and maintained by the entities inhabiting that hyperdimensional and vastly more complex world, and that our souls (our hyperdimensional selves) pre-exist in that world and incarnate in physical bodies, returning at the death of the body to the hyperspatial world from which they came. Or perhaps both are true.

Galileo pioneered the foundation of physics upon observation, and he developed an early form of the telescope to view the mountains of the Moon and the moons of Jupiter, whose existence was denied a priori by the Aristotelian philosophers of his time. In this dispute two of these philosophers, Cesare Cremonini and Giulio Libri, refused even to look through Galileo's telescope. Similarly, most if not all contemporary philosophers refuse to look through the lens provided by psychedelic substances so as to perceive a reality which physicalists deny exists (just as the philosophers of Galileo's time denied the existence of the moons of Jupiter). Observations resulting from the use of DMT absolutely refute the conventional physicalist view of the world, but at present this is known only by a relatively small number people - who are the true gnostics of this age.

Has "doomsday" begun already?

Has "doomsday" begun already?

© 2011 By Gary Vey

The horrific earthquake and nuclear meltdown in Japan has shaken the world. There's a discussion ensuing on the internet that the "2012 Doomsday" has begun. It seems appropriate to write about this, since everything else pales in significance. So we dare to ask, "Has the doomsday finally begun?"

Viewzone Editor's Note: I know that attention spans on the internet are short. I will therefore tell you that, yes, I believe a kind of doomsday has begun and it is caused by a cyclical interaction between the Earth and the Sun. I will attempt to explain this as best I can later in this article. It's only a theory for you to consider and I strongly advise viewzone readers to do your own research.

In researching this story I considered some of the most popular prophets of doom on the internet. I've written about them before, but I will describe them again for those who are new to this sort of thing.

The "Time Wave" Theory of Doomsday

Terrence McKenna was a genius who focused his vast intellect on the I-Ching (among many other complex issues), an ancient Chinese system for predicting future trends. His "discovery" was that, hidden in the structure of the I-Ching, there was a fractal pattern of time that could describe the events of human civilization in terms of routine and novel life. Routine life was when civilization copes well and makes quick adjustments to their changing world. This is contrasted by novelty, when civilization struggles to cope with unfamiliar circumstances.

McKenna produced a graph that plotted these trends over time. He called this graph the "Time Wave" and he noted that the graph ended in maximum novelty on the traditional doomsday, December 21, 2012.

We first reported about McKenna's Time Wave Theory, in the Spring of 2010 and noted that some pivotal event was predicted to occur in early July when routine life plateaued. This was believed by many to be the "beginning of the end" for humanity. But this never happened. Another significant date was November 11th of that year when the Time Wave dropped sharply, plunging to the depths of novelty. But that also failed to prove significant.

So, in light of the catastrophe in Japan on March 11th, we thought we'd see how the Time Wave plotted this particular disaster -- certainly a novel event for almost everyone in the Pacific area. The chart below shows the Time Wave predictions.

OK. Unless something dramatic happens with the Japanese nuclear meltdown on March 23rd, it's pretty much a bust. Anyone who knows about McKenna will also be aware that he consumed many hallucinogenic substances and wrote extensively about psychedelics. Does that figure in his obvious miscalculations? Maybe. We'll have to see.

Clif High's Web Bot Program

The Web Bot is a computer program that scans the internet and looks for subtle changes in language, how certain words are used, and analyses this information to predict certain trends in our changing human culture. The web bot has been able to predict the future so well that the it has been used by economists and stock traders with a good to excellent rating.

I've written about the web bot for viewzone before. I became interested when the program's designer, Clif High, started applying his linguistic analysis to social phenomenon and natural disasters. Clif publishes a series of quarterly predictions that foretell "doomsday" in some detail.

Clif High has quite a following. But that following dropped precipitously when he linked doomsday to the BP Gulf oil disaster back in 2010, and even more so when his "Israeli Mistake" -- a nuclear disaster resulting from Isreal's raid on the nuclear facilities in Iraq -- didn't happen.

Clif was quiet for a while and many thought he was finished with his predictions. But he had one last bit of future insight up his sleeves -- the "Expanding Earth Theory". It's not a new theory, and it's not Clif's. But he did always mention some linguistic clues about a "Sun disease" that, in hindsight, mesh with this doomsday theory and could save his credibility. Let's take a look.

Something Old & Something New

If you have ever looked at a map of the world, you have undoubtedly noticed that the East coast of South America appears to mimic the shape of the West coast of Africa. This observation was also noticed by German born geophysicists, Alfred Wegener, who proposed that the continents we see today were once connected. His theory (Kontinentalverschiebung) [1] was ridiculed and dismissed for 40 years because no one could imagine how continents could move and essentially plow through the ocean floor's crust.

But in the 1950s a research ship of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, conducted a deep sea survey of the Atlantic Ocean's floor and discovered an enormous submerged mountain chain which they named the "Mid-Atlantic Ridge" [2][3][4]. It was later discovered that every ocean contains parts of the same, interconnected mid-ocean ridge system. Although the ridge system runs down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the ridge is located away from the center of other oceans.

Close examination of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and other mid-ocean ridges, revealed that these were formed by cracks in the earth's crust which allowed magma to come to the surface, cool and solidify to become new crust. In fact, core samples of the crust on either side of the ridges showed that it was relatively new and spreading out, away from the ridge. At last, Wegener's plate tectonic theory was accepted!

Subduction Zones?

One of the interesting things about paradigms is that they stubbornly refuse to die. The idea that the Earth had never changed persisted, even though Wegener's plate tectonic theory was the new paradigm. Sure, new crust was being formed in the mid-ocean ridges and this was moving the continents, but the size of the planet wouldn't change-- would it?

[Above: Assuming the planet was the same size as it presently is, the original continent, Pangaea, would have been surrounded by a vast ocean.]

To maintain a planet of the same size, there has to be a method to compensate for the new crust being made in the ridges. To solve this dilemma, scientists theorized that the plates sometimes move under other plates in a process called subduction.

[Above: 1 Mid-ocean ridges can be seen all over the planet, adding about a cubic mile of crust each year. Contrast this to the relatively few and dispersed subduction zones Above: 2 around the globe.]

The map above shows the age of the earth's oceanic crust from newest (red) to oldest (blue).

There is no "direct" proof of subduction. No experimental objects have been placed to measure it and no land masses have ever been oberved moving towards each other. [*] So the question arises: is there an alternate theory? And what does this theory reveal about "doomsday"?

The Expanding Earth Theory -- cycles of doom

Shortly after Wegener's continental drift theory was introduced, many people tried to piece together the continents. Some pieces (like South America and Africa) were an obvious fit, but others did not fit together because of the belief that a vast ocean had to be accommodated in the models. Sam Carey, an Australian, dared to solve the puzzle without an ocean and found that the continents fit together perfectly. Of course, this was in the 1930s at a time when Wegener's theory was still being ridiculed and mocked.

But Carey was on to something big... or small. His solution only worked if the Earth was a fraction of its present size. But it worked perfectly. Check this out:

There is strong evidence that the oceans are a relatively recent addition to planet Earth. All the present ocean floors are geologically young [5]. Present-day continents, such as Australia, were formed about 4.3 billion years ago. In contrast, the geologically oldest seafloor formed only 180 million years ago.

The Plate Tectonic model assumes this is because older oceanic crust has been subducted [6]. For this assumption to be correct, an area equivalent to the Pacific Ocean would have had to be subducted under the Americas since the Jurassic period, with no debris or remnants of older oceanic crust left behind. We just don't see that kind of vigorous subduction taking place anywhere on the planet today.

Biologists have looked at ancient plant and animal fossils to determine which continents and oceans they once inhabited. They concluded that, "The balance of evidence seems to require an expanding earth..." [7].

Carey suggested that an experiment should be conducted to measure the expansion and, in 1986, his suggestion was carried out.

A pair of receivers [A & B below] were set up at different locations on the earth, each looking at the same quasar and listening to its radio emissions.[8] Quasars are radio sources which serve as a universal beacon. Because of the curvature of the Earth, one location (A) was slightly nearer to the quasar signal and so received it first. Using the time delay and a little geometry, the difference in the distance between the two stations and the quasar can be determined. If the same measurements are taken at a later time, when the two receivers are oriented with respect to the quasar as before, if receiver B has moved closer to the quasar, the delay time between them will be less.

Since we know that the distance between the two receivers [A and B] has not changed, evidence of their apparent change in distance from the Quasar [C] must be attributed to the fact that the curvature of the Earth has lessened from expansion. Over a ten year period, experimental results showed an earth expansion of about two centimeters per year (2.0 cm/yr), while the actual surface separation [A and B] remained constant.

This may sound small, but the volume is enormous.

Giraffes and Dinosaurs

If the Earth were the size of Carey's model, 250-million years ago, it would likely have had just 50% of its present gravity. As it grew larger the gravity would increase. Proponents of the Expanding Earth theory are quick to note that this explains some mysteries that have puzzled archaeologists and biologists. It seems that they are at a loss to explain how animals such as dinosaurs could have evolved to be so huge.

Giraffes have a maximum height to which their necks can grow. This is determined by the pull of gravity on the blood in the arteries travelling up to their brains. A height over 17 feet apparently reaches the limits of heart muscles. But dinosaurs were much larger. How did they achieve adequate blood perfusion in their brains?

According to researcher and author, Stephen Hurrell:

"To understand why dinosaurs were so large we need to turn the question of their large size on its head and ask why the animals of today don't grow as large as the dinosaurs.

As any animal becomes larger its mass (and hence its weight) varies in relation to its unit length cubed, while the area (and hence the strength) of its legs varies in relationship to its unit length squared. This mathematical relationship governs the size of all life, so as animals increase in size their strength-to-weight ratio reduces until they reach an upper size limit.

This upper limit is the reason why it is so surprising that dinosaurs were so gigantic. Today's life appears to have reached the maximum size achievable, but life during the dinosaurs' time was much larger. This larger size could be explained if dinosaurs weighed less because gravity was less at that time."[9]

What about that DOOMSDAY?

So if the earth was smaller in the past, and is growing larger every year, how does this figure into the doomsday scenario?

According to Clif High, the reason that Earth grows in size has to do with what's inside of it. He suggests that the core of the planet is not made of molten iron, as the Plate Tectonics theory proposes. Clif considers the new plasma paradigm that is rapidly winning over astrophysicists as the basic substance of the universe -- slowly but surely pushing aside the gravity model to explain how things are made and held together.

Plasma is the fourth state of matter (different from solid, liquid and gas) and it's everywhere in the universe. Plasma has unusual properties that explain how matter is created from pure energy. While we may not yet understand these properties, the existence of matter in the plasma universe is proof that it is so. That same process is supposedly going on inside our planet -- new matter is being created from streaming plasma that comes from our Sun and possibly other sources such as Gamma Ray Bursts [10].

But wait... there's more!

This stream of plasma doesn't just trickle through the solar system. NASA has detected a portal through which our Sun's magnetic field connects directly to Earth's magnetic field about once every eight minutes.[11] While that could account for the average yearly increase in matter, there's something even more significant. Our Sun has cycles of 11,500 to 12,000 years where it ramps up its blasts of plasma, sending huge vollies of energy in the form of Coronal Mass Ejections and flares that rapidly increase the Earth's expansion. [12] And, according to Cliff High, we have just entered one of these cycles.

We've written about this cycle in the past (see The Last Doomsday) in some detail. It's real and based on sound scientific evidence. We'll be writing more about this in our next installment of this series which will discuss the superwave theory developed by Dr. Paul Laviolette.

Our previous speculation was that a powerful solar blast would produce atmospheric disturbances and fry electrical circuits on Earth -- bringing us back to the pre-electric, pioneer days. We failed to see the link between seismic disturbances -- earthquakes, tsunamis and floods -- until Cliff made the Expanding Earth connection. The 9.0 quake in Japan reinforced this link.

Mega-Flares and X-Flares

On March 9th, 2011, the following report was issued in the Earth Changes Newsletter:

"Over the last 48 hours, ten (10) M-Class flares have fired off from at least three separate sunspot regions. Space Shuttle was put on alert and lands safely prior to elevated solar activity ... Forty-eight hours after the first set of flares, a 7.2 mag. earthquake hit Japan setting off a small tsunami. Ten hours later, a series of "straight-line winds" along with several tornadoes hit the southeastern United States."

Then, the next day, this report came from the Space Weather Observatory:

Space Weather News for March 10, 2011
http://spaceweather.com

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: March 9th ended with a powerful solar flare. Less than an hour before midnight (UT), Earth-orbiting satellites detected an X1.5-class explosion from behemoth sunspot 1166. First-look data suggest that the blast did hurl some material toward Earth. Check spaceweather.com for movies of the flare and updates on its possible effects.

Then, on March 11, 2011, the unprecedented 9.0 earthquake hit Japan causing a massive tsunami that killed an estimated 16,000 people. Coincidence?

Pole Shift Madness

For a while here on viewzone we have been hearing from readers who believe that the crust of the Earth will slip around the mantle, re-arranging the continental plates and causing what is curiously referred to as a "pole shift". This is a theory that was put forth by Charles Hapgood (again, we have written about this HERE).

The most popular version of this doomsday scenario has a rogue planet -- planet-X -- entering the solar system and disturbing the gravity of our planet. This prediction features most prominently on Nancy Lieder's website "zetatalk.com" and has an international following. Nancy claims to receive her information from grey aliens called "Zetas" who have the star system Zeta Reticuli as their origin and communicate with her telepathically.

While one could spend considerable time debating her predictions, the following information seems to bear witness against her. First, the typical "Grey" alien made popular by Whitley Strieber in his book Communion is not a Zeta. The term "Zeta" originated from the UFO encounter with Betty and Barney Hill back in the 1960s. According to Betty Hill, she was shown a star map of the alien's home planet which she later drew under hypnosis. Analysis of this drawing showed that it was remarkably similar to the star system we call Zeta Reticuli, thus the name. But the aliens that Betty described looked nothing like the big-eyed, grey skinned aliens depicted by Strieber. In fact, Betty was asked outright in an interview if she met the Greys and she emphatically said "No!" Her abductees -- the real Zetas -- were more human like in appearance.

Then there is the problem with planet-X. This has its origins in the rogue planet first described by Zecharia Sitchin in The Twelfth Planet. This wandering giant supposedly has an orbit of 3600 years around our Sun and periodically enters the vicinity of Earth, causing gravity problems and tidal waves. The flood of the Bible and the Sumerian legend of Utnapishtam is supposedly related to one of its more recent passages near our planet. Nancy Lieder relies on this planet -- called "Nibiru" by Sitchin -- to trigger her pole shift doomsday. But before he passed away, Sitchin was asked specifically about Nancy's prediction and whether this planet could be involved in a 2012 doomsday scenario. Sitchin totally distanced himself from her predictions stating that Nibiru was still 1200 years away in its outer orbit.

And lastly, there is the belief that pole shifts have happened in the past, giving credence to the validity of Nancy Lieder's predictions.

As we have discussed in this article, core samples were taken on both sides of the mid-Atlantic ridge to determine the age of the oceanic crust. These samples also revealed the direction of the earth's magnetic field when they were created. These core samples go back millions of years and show that the earth has never had its crust oriented to a different magnetic pole (other than those times when the poles naturally reversed polarity), nor has the Earth's crust ever been displaced by a so-called pole-shift. Totally busted!

We will write more stories about predictions in the coming weeks. For now, it looks like the problems we will encounter -- or are currently already experiencing -- are from our Sun, coupled with our own human ineptness in relying too much on vulnerable technologies.

Please write to viewzone and tell us what YOU think.

Next... Glaactic Core Explosions

We're preparing to present Dr. Paul Laviolette's superwave theory which has a cyclical periodicity of about 12,000 years. This dramatic breakthrough further explains the solar storms we have described in our discussion about the expanding earth. It's very important information that has just recently been subjected to intense scientific scrutiny ... next on viewzone!

Test Driving the TimeWave and the Webbot: Explorations in Futures Forecasting

Test Driving the TimeWave and the Webbot
 Explorations in Futures Forecasting
by Rohaan Solare

The TimeWave

The TimeWave is a mathematical program that purports to measure the ebb, flow and rate of novelty in our world. The TimeWave depicts increasingly greater magnitudes of novelty as we approach Dec. 21, 2012—the day the Mayan Long Count Calendar starts anew. The TimeWave was developed independently of Mayan Calendar knowledge.

TimeWave Versions

The TimeWave can be mapped using 5 different number sets. Certain versions are said to be more “mathematically sound” than others. They all end on the same date of Dec 21, 2012, but the wave patterns of peaks and valleys vary among the different versions.
The Sheliak, Watkins and Kelly versions match up well in general terms and the Watkins’ and Kelly versions are nearly identical. The Franklin and Huang Ti versions are the most divergent.
Most TimeWave followers seem to prefer either the Sheliak or Watkins’ version. I am using the Watkins’ version for this experiment because it matches the Webbot’s predictions to a Tee.
Special Note: The correspondences between the Watkins TimeWave version and the latest Webbot report are so exact that some have asked the question if perhaps, Cliff High the publisher of the Webbot report, is superimposing his data results on the TimeWave.
The question doesn’t make sense unless he has 1), verified the accuracy of the Watkins’ TimeWave version, 2), seen the correlations between the two systems and then 3), uses the TimeWave because it improves the accuracy of his reports.
Those interested may download a free copy of the TimeWave software here

What is Novelty?
A dictionary will define novelty as the quality of being new, original, or unusual. When it gets down to it every instance is new because the set of circumstances surrounding every instance changes from one moment to the next.
We must therefore talk about the magnitude and/or rate of novelty to make the word useful when talking about change over time.
In the context of time, novelty is a measure of change. Sometimes the changes in a set of circumstances are great and sometimes they are negligible. Terrence McKenna, the developer of the TimeWave claims it measures the difference in the rate between decreasing change and increasing change/novelty in our world.
Decreasing change is referred to as habit and stability by TimeWave adepts and increasing change as novelty. Downward flows on the Timewave graph represent increasing novelty and the upward flows denote a decreasing rate of change.

The Webbot
The Webbot is a specialized search engine that measures the appearance of certain emotionally laden key words from emerging web content. The developers of the Webbot program claim that they are able to predict the timing and nature of large scale events based on their analysis on the language samples they collect.

Cliff High is the developer of the Webbot program that is also known by its formal name the ALTA program. Mr. High believes that the language he is tapping into comes from our collective unconscious. If that is indeed the case and the Webbot proves to be accurate then it would confirm certain theories about the future being already determined and computable.
My own investigations into story telling and artistic expression have led me to conclude that elements of the future do indeed bleed through our stories and artworks. Please see Alex Grey’s 1989 Gaia painting. Please note the two jets and the World Trade Center towers. For more information on my ventures into the existence of elements of the future in written works please see Alice and the Rabbit Holographic Universe.
More information on the Webbot maybe found on Mr. Highs website at Half Past Human. I have discerned that Mr.High is apt to at times over-interpret or misinterpret the magnitude and thematics of the events alluded to by his data samples.
But it seems that the time frames and general nature of his advisories are accurate, consistent and specific enough to win a significant following myself included. Mr. High uses the phrases tension building and tension releasing to zero in on the time frames when we should expect large scale events to happen.

Graph 1: TimeWave and Webbot Report Correlation from Sept. 19, 2006 to Dec. 21, 2012

I have noted certain dates for reference and orientation. The dates mentioned by the latest Webbot report are noted on the graph. The following is an excerpt from the Webbot Report describing the nature of the time leading up to November 14th, 2010.
Further, the plateau of building emotional tension now extends out further to the 14th of November instead of the 11th. This is the last building tension to accrue. Expect the level to stay maddeningly the same until the breaking point. Repeat. The ‘break’ in the tension values that indicates the tipping point after which we (the planet of humans) is into emotional release language starts on November 14th at 6:50AM Pacific Coast Time (UTC=+ 8). Repeat – Tipping point starts on 11-14-2010.
I will add that on November 13th the corresponding AA Tzolkin date is characterized by the archetype of 11 Storm whose key attributes are energy, catalyze, dissolves and liberation.

Graph 2: TimeWave and Webbot Report Correlation from Dec 15, 2010 to Feb. 15, 2011

The notations on the graph zero in on two two-day periods. One being Jan. 1st to the 2nd and the second from Jan. 7th to the 8th. As you will see the correspondences between the Webbot dates and features on the TimeWave are uncannily precise.
The following is an excerpt from the Webbot report describing the characteristic of those 2 dates.
However, the data analyzed this morning shows that a minor small plateau shows up on January 1, 2011, that starts about 5AM Pacific Coast Time (UTC =+ 8) and lasts for nearly 25 hours until about 6 AM on January 2. During this 25 hour period the data shows that while the language still is within the release of emotional tension type, its rate of emotional release value sums virtually drops to zero. So kind of a ‘hang time’. This small respite of slightly over one solar day, is abruptly shifted back to the release language value decrease rate as though without pause on January 2, 2011.
This rate then continues unabated for 5 additional days until January 7th at which point becomes really accelerated (increased angle of descent) as the rate of numeric value reduction nearly doubles. Stated another way, the levels of release language, already very severe, and in continuous stream since November 14th of 2010, nearly double in a very rapid fashion over mere hours (1.12 hours) on January 7th, at about 5 AM. Further this increased rate of emotional release language persists for an additional 23 hours until 4:30 AM on the 8th of January. Then, whew, the rate of release language goes back to its previously experienced levels, which , while steep, are not as intense as the January 7 to 8

Graph 3: The TimeWave from 1891 to December 21, 2012

The TimeWave is essentially a fractal construct and as such we are going to find sets of repeating patterns.

The implication of time as fractally structured means that we should be able to find thematic and energetic correspondences or resonances between different epochs of time that share the same waveform.
I have discovered that the Timewave has 4 distinct macro scale contours to its wave form. I differentiate between the scales based on a consistent pattern of peaks and valleys that then changes into either a different pattern and/or a different intensity scale.

On graph 5 I note the 4 patterns and I refer to them as novelty scales. Graph 3 shows three novelty scales. The contours of graph 3 are identical to the time period from Feb. 2011 to Dec. 21, 2012. The same contours appear again between Dec. 11 and Dec. 21, 2012.

Graph 4: The TimeWave from the 1990 to December 21, 2012

On this graph the large and consistent wave pattern we see from April 1992 to Oct. 2008 is what I refer to as novelty scale 4. After Oct. 2008 we see a dramatic decline towards increasing magnitudes of novelty all the way to Dec. 21, 2012.

Graph 5: The Four Novelty Scales of the TimeWave

This graph highlights the 4 novelty scales. Novelty scale 4 is too small to see its detail, but it is identical in structure to the time period shown above on graph 4 that spans from April 1992 to October 2008. On graph 5 novelty scale 4 begins anew on July 16, 2012.

Graph 6: A Maya Precessional Cycle of 26,626 Years mapped on the TimeWave

Many of you have heard the numbers 26,000 and 25,920 used when referring to the length of the precessional cycle. The former number is a round off commonly used by the lay public and the later is used by Western astrologers. According to Western astronomy the precessional cycle is 25,765 years.
If we refer to the Maya calendrical system we come up with a figure of 26,000 tun. A tun is 360 days. 26,000 tun equals 25,626 years.   The Maya counting system reflects the timing order they discovered while studying the movements of the stars and planets.
The Mayan Long Count cycle that comes to an end on Dec. 21, 2012 is a period measuring exactly 5200 tun. 5200 tun is one fifth of 26,000 tun. It seems the galactic timing frequency is based on multiples of 4, 13, 20, 52, 65, 260 and 360.
Counting in years represents the unenlightened calendrical heliocentrism of the West. Maya-Meso American Calendrics (MMAC) is galacticentric in its account of time measurements.
Please note that the contours of graph 6 perfectly match the contours of graph 1. The implication according to fractal time compression is that the last 6 years leading up to 2012 are a fractal equivalent of the last 25,626 years.
We are in effect processing as much information in the last six years leading up to 2012 as we have during the last 25,626 years. “We” refers to humanity as an integral expression of the solar system. Those of your new to my work on Maya Meso American calendrics may find more information in the 2012 and Synchronicity sections of the Emergent-Culture Website.

At this point in my investigations I can’t vouch for the validity or accuracy of either the TimeWave or the Webbot, but the information I have been reviewing is provocative enough to compel me to do my own studies.
