Experiments in the revival of an organism

Experiments in the revival of an organism
Research in the revival of animal organisms by the means of an artificial blood circulation system.

The experiment was carried out at the Institute of Experimental Physiology and Therapy, U.S.S.R. The filmed experiment was performed by former Soviet Union scientists. The experiment was shared with the US through the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship. In the film there are several experiments.

First, a dog’s heart is removed from the animal attached to a blood circulation apparatus, then it starts to beat.

Second experiment, is on lungs taken from an animal. Balloons extend and fill the lungs with air. Blood is forced into the lungs by a pump, then exited fully oxygenated. The oxygenated blood is used for further experimentation.

Third experiment, a dog’s head kept alive with no body. The life support for the head is fully artificial. The isolated head lives on for hours. Though it’s not given enough energy to fully react, it does react to stimulus, light, sound, taste.

With the knowledge they acquired through these experiments. The soviet scientists were also able to revive the entire animal.

The last experiment, the soviet scientist created a device they called the “Auto-ejecter”. The Auto-jecter carried out the functions of the heart and lungs. The animal, a dog is stretched out then injected with an anti-clotting agent. The dog’s blood is drained out of its body through its artery and collected. Once the heart has stopped beating, a clock keeps the time. After about 10 minutes the animal is connected to the Auto-ejecter. The Auto-eject then starts to replace the blood into the animal and forces the proper blood circulation. With the circulation of the blood, the heart is induced to start beating again. When the heart beating becomes normal the dog has been fully revived. At that point the Auto-eject can be removed.

After a recovery period the animal is back to normal condition.

The scientist that developed this technic was Sergey Sergeyevich Bryukhonenko. Bryukhonenko's research led to open heart procedures in Russia. He was a leader at the Research Institute of Experimental Surgery, which is also where the soviets performed the first open heart operation.

Bryukhonenko also is the primary developer of the Auto-ejecter.

The film is narrated by British geneticist and evolutionary biologist, J.B.S Haldane, the founder of population genetics.

There is speculation that the film might be a reenactment, the experiments themselves are very well documented and never questioned.

Further developments in this field also lead to the production of a device to keep a human head alive indefinitely, with the use of drugs.
