Decolonising Humanity by Reconnecting with the Earth

Colonization has not only disconnected us from nature,
it has disconnected us from our True Selves

During a recent speaking tour in his homeland of South Africa, the Creative Director of Starseed Gardens, Dan Schreiber shared insight into the theme of “decolonization” as a pathway to bring contemporary culture back into direct connection and experience of our own true nature.

‘There was a story told by the Gnostics of how Aeon Sophia, the Goddess who created the earth, loved this particular creative project so much that she became the Earth. So, to the cultures pre-Christianity and pre-monotheism, the Earth was a living, sacred being. Everything was sacred. The trees, the rocks, the oceans. And the people lived in accordance with that. There was an invisible, spiritual God and a physical Goddess, which was the Earth.

‘The birth of monotheism marked the death of Sophia in a sense because once humanity was disconnected from the Earth as a spiritual living being, then they could lay waste to the oceans and the rivers and cut down the forests.’

Seeing the Earth as a living, sacred being

Dan goes on to describe how the colonization process of the European and British empires in South Africa, Australia, India and the Americas was a process that broke down the basic, inherent connection with the Earth that the settlers themselves had before they became invaders and occupiers of new Lands. Not only were Lands colonized, but minds too.

‘When Europeans arrived in these lands, they had built within them a superiority complex. “We have guns, we have technology therefore we must be more civilized.” They chose a whole bunch of beliefs to support that premise. The Darwinian idea of evolution meant that they could convince their soldiers that we came from primordial ooze, through amphibians to reptiles and mammals, then to monkeys that awoken, then to black people and finally to white people. The belief of this succession meant that white people – the white male – could now have a moral and spiritual imperative. “We are the most advanced evolutionary beings on the planet so of course we can rule over everyone else.” Which, of course, is absolute rubbish.

‘Without that colonization of the mind of the soldiers themselves, these people wouldn’t have been able to walk through the jungles of South America and say, “Yes we are the superior race, give us your gold, before we rape and pillage.” Which they did.’

Dan believes that in many ways we are “living through the karma” of this colonization and disconnection process, and sites the plant kingdom as a powerful example of this.

‘Take a plant like sugar. Sugar was one of the main colonizing tools. There was a huge demand for sugar in Europe. They went and they took the sugar to the tropics and they said, “You grow this. And they paid the Javanese people to have children to work in the sugar plantations. In this way, they could take over the land without actually fighting, by creating an economic imperative which ultimately lead the tribal leaders to enslave their own people in order to serve this imperative. But the karma of sugar is returning and we now have to digest that slavery in the form of alcoholism and diabetes as it sweeps the western world. Tobacco is another example, which was one of the most sacred plants on the planet. Now the karma of tobacco, misused for economic gain and control is playing out across the planet. How many people are killed each year?’

Restoring our connection with the Earth

The question is, as the descendants of those original invaders, how do we de-colonize ourselves and restore our loss of connection with Earth?

‘(This) process has been carried out by our ancestors on the land throughout the ages in the form of rites of passage, vision quests, fasts, sweat lodges. To the First Nation people of America, if one of their own was losing touch with their sense of connection they would stick out like a sore thumb and they would be brought back into the fold and taken through a process of re-connection.

‘Today there is so much disconnection in our western world, it is a pandemic. We often can’t even see it because we are not living in a community that is connected for us to be guided back to. We all share this cognitive dissonance, this dis-connectivity. So much so that in many cases, the connected ones seem insane!’

In Dan’s view, the modern reconnection process started en-masse in the 60s, supported by the psychedelic revolution that served as a literal re-awakening of a part of the brain. There was a left and right hemisphere reconnection. East and West rediscovered each other.

‘Now, as I travel around the world I am struck by how many people are interested in the Gnostic practice of waking up and connecting to the Divine directly outside of religious practice, outside of the church. Outside of the hierarchy of people saying, “Well if you do this and you follow me, you get to the Pearly Gates.” This idea of a direct connection with Source, and the reawakening and re-sacralizing of the Earth becomes so important. The rebirth of Sophia is in full swing and has been prophesized for this time and each one of us plays out this awakening in our bodies.’

For the descendants of settlers and occupiers of stolen land, this is a powerful time to wake up to what the indigenous people of those lands have always known, that the destructive processes of colonization ultimately serve only to separate us from each other and the very Source of life… and it must stop. It is up to each of us to claim personal responsibility for decolonizing ourselves, and to do this we must be willing to go on a personal journey of reconnection and awakening, to restore our inherent sense of wholeness and bring ourselves back into connection with the Earth.

For Dan Schreiber, the journey back is a daily one of simple actions stemming from a deep reverence and commitment to being in genuine communion with the living energy of the Earth.

‘Stand barefoot on the ground. Look at the sun. Bathe yourself in the sun. Go for clean water. If you can’t drink the water around here, there is a problem. If you can’t grow crops without Round Up, there’s a problem. Once we’ve re-awoken, how we live, how we grow our food becomes a natural expression of that awakening to who we really are.’

Orgone, Wilhelm Reich and the Peaceful Ape

James DeMeo has been investigating the work of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich since 1970, and founded the Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory in 1978. With cooperative assistance from a network of professionals and institutes supportive of Wilhelm Reich's original discoveries, OBRL has grown to become one of the world's primary centers for genuine and uncompromised research and educational programs focused upon Orgonomy, the science of orgone (life) energy functions in nature, as developed by Reich in the first half of the 20th Century.

Starting in 1977, as part of his graduate research at the University of Kansas, DeMeo undertook replication studies of Reich's biophysical research -- specifically, a systematic evaluation of the Reich cloudbuster which yielded positive results.

The acceptance of DeMeo's work by the KU faculty constituted the first time any aspect of Reich's controversial biophysical research had been validated by peer-review within a mainstream academic institution. Through the organizational structure of OBRL, and with the cooperative assistance and support of many other individuals and groups dedicated to Reich's works, DeMeo has since directed field applications of the cloudbuster apparatus, successfully ending droughts across the USA and overseas as well, with applications towards reducing the energetic stagnation characteristic of wetter regions suffering from chronic air pollution and forest-death.

A number of Desert Greening expeditions have also been organized and directed by DeMeo within the arid zones of the Southwestern USA, and into the dry regions of Namibia and Israel, producing a dramatic verification of Reich's earlier findings on the ability of the cloudbuster to bring rains under even extremely dry conditions. With the support of local governments, a five-year desert-greening experiment was also undertaken in the 1990s, in the East African Sahel region adjacent to the hyperarid Sahara Desert. All of these projects have produced significantly positive results with sometimes-dramatic increases in rainfall, ending dry episodes of sometimes decades duration, filling reservoirs and greening parched landscapes. This work constitutes a major breakthrough in combating the intractable problems of drought and desert-spreading, with their attendant famine and social-economic upheavals, and is a major focus of research activity at OBRL.

In the early 1980s, DeMeo embarked upon what was then, and still remains, the most comprehensive and systematic global cross-cultural study of human behavior yet undertaken, a 10-year research effort which focused upon the geographical parameters of human behavior, as expressed in archaeology, history, and cross-cultural ethnography. DeMeo's numerous behavior maps of various social institutions and eventual discovery of the social/environmental region of Saharasia as the original historical source region of patriarchal authoritarian societies, solved the riddle of what Reich called the origins of armoring. Saharasia, now in a comprehensive book, demonstrates the origins of human violence in traumatic and sex-repressive social institutions during the historically-unprecedented epoch of drought, desertification, famine and mass-migrations which gripped the Old World after c.4000 BCE.


This work constitutes a precise and systematic cross-cultural validation of Wilhelm Reich's sex-economic hypothesis on the origins of human neurosis and irrationalism, and proof of the global validity of his Mass Psychology of Fascism. New research continues into this important subject area, confronting popular claims on the "genetic" or "innate" nature of human violence, with attempts to bring the findings contained in Saharasia to a wider public.

Experimental investigation into orgone energy functions in nature continues at OBRL, verifying many of Reich's original findings on the orgone accumulator, with efforts underway towards quantitative evaluations of the elusive properties of living water ("activated" or "structured" water). DeMeo's work along this track has uncovered measurable changes in water evaporation and surface tension due to orgone-charging, as well as plant growth-enhancement effects. Through OBRL and the Natural Energy Works publication and distribution company, DeMeo's Orgone Accumulator Handbook, Saharasia and the OBRL Pulse of the Planet research journal have been distributed world-wide, in English and other languages. Research undertaken by DeMeo and associates of OBRL constitutes a major support for Reich's earlier findings, with important extensions and bridges built between Reich's orgonomy and a few of the more open and genuine elements of modern science.

In 1995, the Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory relocated to a pristine, energetically-vital forested environment in rural southwestern Oregon, and the Greensprings Center was born. A new laboratory building was constructed, which doubles as a seminar facility, and an orgone-energy darkroom was added in 1998. New research was initiated, and laboratory-oriented educational seminars, taught by teams of top-notch professionals with decades of experience, have been offered each summer on central aspects of orgonomy.

These include weekend seminars on subjects such as "Bions, Biogenesis and the Reich Blood Test", on "The Orgone Energy Accumulator", and a "Guided Independent Study Program" or "Laboratory Seminar on General Orgonomy", for the more serious individual. Special seminars on Saharasia and Global Weather are also offered periodically, as are other special topics. Even his orgone accumulator, dismissed by know-nothings as a 'quack' appliance, turns out to be a potent therapeutic device, capable of beneficially stimulating the physiology of plants, animals, and people. The orgone, as a directly observable and measurable atmospheric energy, also plays a fundamental role in our weather, as proven by many experiments with the cloudbusting instrument, a device which has already been used to break many droughts, and bring rains to deserts. For many years I have researched and tested Reich's various discoveries, and found them to be sound, and worthy of our most serious considerations. He has laid the foundations for an entirely new functional science and world view, which has already borne significant and badly-needed fruits."

James DeMeo's Saharasia is the largest and most in-depth scholarly study on human behavior and social violence around the world which has ever been undertaken. The findings summarized in Prof. DeMeo's book cover the entire globe, from early prehistory into modern times, integrating on world-maps a full sweep of standard research data from the fields of archaeology and history, plus an in-depth cross-cultural review and mapping of data from over 1000 distinctly different human societies, from standard anthropological data bases. It employed standard cross-cultural correlation tables on over 60 different variables, plus geographical mapping and quadruple blind research procedures to insure objectivity, and all the basic starting assumptions are clearly elucidated in advance. The work also incorporates his own personal field research in the deserts of the Middle East and Southwestern USA.

No great knowledge of maths or scientific methods is required to follow the logic and research to their conclusions, though the book is clearly written for scholars. An early period of generally peaceful social conditions is documented in prehistory, but with a major shift towards patriarchal-authoritarian and decidedly violent social conditions across the Saharasian region after a major climate-shift from wet grassland-forest conditions towards harsh desert conditions at c.5000-4000 BC.

Major epochs of cultural diffusion are also presented on maps, showing how violent patriarchal authoritarian, sex-repressive and child-abusive behaviors were carried outward from their Saharasian origins to nearly every corner of the globe. It presents previously-unknown geographical patterns in dozens of different human behaviors, beliefs and social institutions representative of human violence and warlike aggression, such as slavery, castes, genital mutilations and a low women's status.

The findings have been praised by many, published in scientific journals and magazines, cited repeatedly, but in largest measure have been willfully censored out of the discussion by most within the editorial power-circles of modern academics and mainstream journalism, which continues to embrace the flawed and disproven theories of "violent genes" or other "original sin" concepts. None of those theories, nor anything like them, can stand in the face of the new evidence presented in Prof. DeMeo's Saharasia.
