A Voice Only You Can Hear: DARPA's Sonic Projector

Imagine a weapon that creates sound that only you can hear. Science fiction? No, this is one area that has a very solid basis in reality. The Air Force has experimented with microwaves that create sounds in people's head (which they've called a possible psychological warfare tool), and American Technologies can "beam" sounds to specific targets with their patented HyperSound (and yes, I've heard/seen them demonstrate the speakers, and they are shockingly effective).

Sound Now the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is jumping on the bandwagon with their new "Sonic Projector" program:

The goal of the Sonic Projector program is to provide Special Forces with a method of surreptitious audio communication at distances over 1 km. Sonic Projector technology is based on the non-linear interaction of sound in air translating an ultrasonic signal into audible sound.

The Sonic Projector will be designed to be a man-deployable system, using high power acoustic transducer technology and signal processing algorithms which result in no, or unintelligible, sound everywhere but at the intended target. The Sonic Projector system could be used to conceal communications for special operations forces and hostage rescue missions, and to disrupt enemy activities.

Here's the question of the day: if the military were to beam voices into somebody's head, what would they say?

Army Yanks 'Voice-To-Skull Devices' Site

The Army's very strange webpage on "Voice-to-Skull" weapons has been removed. It was strange it was there, and it's even stranger it's gone. If you Google it, you'll see the entry for "Voice-to-Skull device," but, if you click on the website, the link is dead.

The entry, still available on the Federation of American Scientists' website reads:

Nonlethal weapon which includes (1) a neuro-electromagnetic device which uses microwave transmission of sound into the skull of persons or animals by way of pulse-modulated microwave radiation; and (2) a silent sound device which can transmit sound into the skull of person or animals. NOTE: The sound modulation may be voice or audio subliminal messages. One application of V2K is use as an electronic scarecrow to frighten birds in the vicinity of airports.

The U.K.-based group Christians Against Mental Slavery first noted the change (they also have a permanent screenshot of the page). A representative of the group tells me they contacted the Webmaster, who would only tell them the entry was "permanently removed."

Sonic Blaster + Laser = New Weapon

Imagine being hit by a nonlethal blast that seems to explode in front of you -- a deafening and blinding combination of light and sound. As the battle for "sonic blasters" heats up, a number of companies are looking at innovative ways to combine light and sound into new, nonlethal devices. One company, Wattre Corp., is working to couple its acoustic technology with a nonlethal laser. In a recent interview with DANGER ROOM, Curt Graber, president of Wattre Corp. explained this newfangled device, which puts together the company's collimated beam of sound with another firm's laser (which creates a sort of mid-air plasma ball). "It’s a laser that basically ignites the air in front of the person," Graber says. "It creates fireworks right in front of you."Hs60_promo_big

The combined effect is what Graber calls a "psycho-acoustical event."

Wattre's technology, called Hyperspike, is a Guinness Book of World Records winner for "loudest speaker." As for the laser portion, produced by a company called Stellar Photonics, DANGER ROOM's David Hambling actually has a good writeup of the technology at New Scientist. "The device uses a technology known as dynamic pulse detonation (DPD). A short but intense laser pulse creates a ball of plasma, and a second laser pulse generates a supersonic shockwave within the plasma to generate a bright flash and a loud bang," he writes. The Plasma Acoustic Shield System will eventually combine a dynamic pulse detonation laser with a high power speaker for hailing or warning, and a dazzler light source."

While the combined sound/laser weapon is certainly a novelty, Wattre Corp. has its eye on the growing long-range hailer market. It competed for a recent Navy contract that was ultimately awarded to American Technology Corp., which produces the Long Range Acoustic Device (Wattre protested the contract award; Graber says the Hyperspike technology has better beam forming capabilities in the human voice range, among other advantages).

While Wattre lost its protest, they've sold units to foreign navies, among other customers; Wattre has also made sales to France for riot control. "Now it’s just a mater of people trying to figure out the best possible usage," he says.

The Voice of God Weapon Returns

The Voice of God weapon -- a device that projects voices into your head to make you think God is speaking to you -- is the military's equivalent of an urban myth. Meaning, it's mentioned periodically at defense workshops (ironically, I first heard about it at the same defense conference where I first met Noah), and typically someone whispers about it actually being used. Now Steven Corman, writing at the COMOPS journal, describes his own encounter with this urban myth:

At a government workshop some time ago I head someone describe a new tool that was described as the “voice of Allah.” This was said to be a device that would operate at a distance and would deliver a message that only a single person could hear. The story was that it was tested in a conflict situation in Iraq and pointed at one insurgent in a group, who whipped around looking in all directions, and began a heated conversation with his compatriots, who did not hear the message. At the time I greeted this story with some skepticism.

Is there any basis to this technology? Well, Holosonic Research Labs and American Technology Corporation both have versions of directed sound, which can allow a single person to hear a message that others around don't hear. DARPA appears to be working on its own sonic projector. Intriguingly, Strategy Page reports that troops are using the Long Range Acoustic Device as a modified Voice of God weapon:

It appears that some of the troops in Iraq are using "spoken" (as opposed to "screeching") LRAD to mess with enemy fighters. Islamic terrorists tend to be superstitious and, of course, very religious. LRAD can put the "word of God" into their heads. If God, in the form of a voice that only you can hear, tells you to surrender, or run away, what are you gonna do?

And as Corman also notes, CNET recently wrote about an advertisement in New York for A&E's TV show Paranormal State, which uses some of this technology. Beyond directed sound, it's long been known that microwaves at certain frequencies can produce an auditory effect that sounds like it's coming from within someone's head (and there's the nagging question of classified microwave work at Brooks Air Force Base, that the Air Force stubbornly refuses to talk about).

That brings us back to the Voice of God/Allah Weapon. Is it real or bogus? In one version -- related to me by another defense reporter -- it's not just Allah's voice -- but an entire holographic image projected above (um, who decides what Allah looks like?).

Does it exist? I'm not sure, but it's funny that when you hear it brought up at defense conferences, no one ever asks the obvious question: does anybody think this thing will actually convince people God is speaking to them? I'm thinking, not.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this blog incorrectly described the technology used in an advertisement for the A&E's TV show Paranormal State. The technology, developed by the Holosonic Research Lab, uses a beam of ultrasound as a "virtual source", which changes into audible sound as it travels through the air. The folks who heard the ad for A&E's TV show Paranormal State emitted from a billboard in New York City's Greenwich Village must have thought it was pretty weird. As they walked into the targeted area they were exposed to highly focused sound. One big advantage of the technology is that it doesn't contribute to ambient-noise pollution. I went to the Village a few days ago to check out the technology, but A&E had already pulled the plug. A&E's PR agency told me the speakers were only active during the first week of the campaign, so you gotta wonder, if it was such a great idea, why turn it off? The billboard is still there.

The phenomenon was covered in a terrific segment on the December 14 On the Media radio program on my local NPR station, WNYC.

Fluoridation Causes Cancer

And ‘The Greatest “Scientific” Fluoride Fraud Yet?’

Six days after almost every major world newspaper announced the results of a scientific review reporting fluoridation of public water supplies to be a safe public health measure (British Medical Journal 2000;3?1:855-859, 7 October; www.bmj.com), shocking evidence was presented during an interview aired on Vancouver radio station CKST AM 1040. The review undertaken by the UK National Health Service's Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York is considered to be the final word on fluoridation , but it might well turn out be the greatest scientific fraud ever undertaken by a centre in charge of evaluating scientific information in the interests of public health.

In an interview with Andreas Schuld, head of a global organisation of parents of children poisoned by excess fluoride intake, evidence was presented showing that the York Review falsified vital information in its Report and deliberately misinformed the public on fluorides adverse health effects. The interview was conducted by Croft Woodruff, host of one of Canada's longest running health radio talk shows, past resident of the Canadian Health Food Association and founding member of the 25,000 member Canadian Health Action Network Society (HANS).

Schuld arrived for the interview with the York Report and numerous studies which had supposedly been reviewed in depth by the esteemed centre. He briefly recounted how the York Centre had changed the wording in the study protocol to avoid inclusion of specific information on fluoride and thyroid effects as well as data concerning the high amounts of fluoride in tea - an issue of obvious concern for the people in the UK.

Schuld's group had supplied the York team with evidence showing that symptoms described in the literature on fluoride's adverse health effects were identical to those observed in thyroid dysfunction, and that the condition known as "dental fluorosis" --now proclaimed by the York Review to be merely an issue of "aesthetic concern"-was actually to be seen as a direct result of fluoride-induced iodine deficiency during the time of enamel formation. The field of dentistry claims that the biochemical factors leading to the enamel defects observed in dental fluorosis are still unknown.

Schuld then cited specific examples of how the York Review had falsified results.

First on the agenda was the issue of thyroid cancer. Schuld read an excerpt from the York Report which claims that no association was found between thyroid cancer and fluoridated water supplies in a study conducted in Britain. Schuld then asked Woodruff to read from the actual data of the study. It showed an increase of 18 per cent in observed thyroid cancers in the fluoridated areas when compared to non-fluoridated areas.

"No association?" Schuld asked, and then proceeded to read from newspaper articles from China, where entire villages are being relocated due to fluoride contamination and where fluoride is being openly acknowledged as the cause of thyroid cancer, Kaschin-Beck disease and iodine deficiency.

Next, Schuld presented a paper which had investigated whether fluoridation had a protective effect on slipped epiphysis, one of the most common hip disorders observed in older children and adolescents. Schuld said that this paper was especially close to his heart, as the condition has been strongly linked to hypothyroidism since the 1920s. Schuld added that this was acknowledged b the study authors themselves who had provided more than 16 references in the paper's first paragraph. TheYork team, which had been informed of fluorides effects on thyroid hormones, should have woken up here Schuld said.

Schuld then read excerpts from the York Report which had found "the direction of association to be positive (a protective effect) in girls and negative (increased risk) in boys", but that neither of these was statistically significant. Schuld again asked Woodruff to look at the actual data in the paper. Woodruff saw an 18 per cent increase of the disease in males in fluoridated areas. Would you consider an 18 per cent increase here significant?" Schuld asked Woodruff, who at this time joined Schuld in declaring the Review a total scientific fraud and called it an example of severe and gross scientific misconduct.

Schuld then read further excerpts from the paper in question, citing how the authors of the study had found that more cases had come from rural areas and that "in general, the rural areas had higher fluoride levels than suburban or urban regions". "In other words, the higher the fluoride levels, the more slipped epiphysis," said Schuld. "Another obvious sign showing the anti-thyroid activity of fluoride."

Schuld ridiculed the York claim that fluoridation showed protective effects in girls. "It is known that the disease almost never occurs in girls once menses has begun," exclaimed Schuld.

Schuld emphasised the issue of delayed eruption of teeth, explaining how it has been established since the 1930s that thyroid hormones control tooth eruption. He then read from the York Report: "It has been suggested that fluoridation may delay the eruption of teeth, and thus caries incidence could be delayed as teeth would be exposed to decay for a shorter period of time. Only one study compared the number of erupted teeth per child. The difference was very small and in opposite directions in the two age-groups examined."

"This is total fraud," Schuld said. "I have 50 papers right here, showing the delayed eruption of teeth in fluoridated areas, including the Newburgh-Kingston data and the papers by Kunzel which were included in the York Review and which they supposedly reviewed. The very same data which they use to prove fluoride's benefits shows this delayed eruption. There are even papers included here which explain how fluorosis gets more severe the later a tooth erupts! Delayed eruption is the single most important factor to consider in evaluating data on fluoridation," explained Schuld. "This delay will produce a delay in the onset of caries which is then interpreted as a benefit. There is no benefit. Caries onset is just delayed. Delayed eruption occurs because you have made the child hypothyroid."

Schuld then reported on studies done in the 1930s by Floyd DeEds, which reported clear results that dental fluorosis is a sign of thyroid dysfunction. According to Schuld, any anti-thyroid administered during the time of enamel formation will produce the effects seen in dental fluorosis, again citing DeEds and his work which showed how cadmium also causes mottled teeth.

Woodruff read from two separate studies by German dental researcher Kunzel (who is represented with four papers in the York Report), which showed how caries occurrence had dropped sharply after the cessation of water fluoridation. The studies were done in Cuba as well as in East Germany, where children enjoyed the greatest caries reduction in 40 years after the practice of fluoridation was halted. "Data from these cities are also in the York Report," said Schuld, "but this time misinterpreted to show a fluoridation benefit! This is an outrageous fraud. Fluorides actually cause cavities. There are countless papers-some of them, again, also found in the York Report-which clearly state that the dental defects seen in fluorosis predispose to caries. Is this also a cosmetic concern only?"

Schuld explained how hyperthyroidism, caused after iodine was added to public water supplies in the early 1920s, led to the use of fluorides as anti-thyroid medication. He also explained the biochemical activity of fluoride as a mimic of TSH (thyroid-stimulating-hormone) on G-protein activation-molecular on/off switches by which all thyroid hormone activity is regulated.

"Fluorides are the worst endocrine disruptor imaginable," he said. "What was once known as the fluoride-iodine antagonism can now be explained in detail by thousands of papers showing the fluoride power on G-protein activation. While the experts claim that the amounts of fluorides used in G-protein investigations are a thousand times higher than those found in the human organism, experiments with rats clearly show that the amounts required to cause thyroid disturbance are identical to the levels which have been identified to cause dental fluorosis."

Schuld talked briefly about the findings of Professor Anna Strunecka in Prague, that aluminium fluoride compounds can affect all the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Woodruff added the disturbing news that this disease is now observed in 30- to 40-year-olds. Schuld further spoke about his group's research into autism after parents reported great improvements in their children's conditions once fluorides were eliminated from the diet; there was a strong association with a group of G proteins, Gq/11, which are also highly implicated in Alzheimer's disease, Down's syndrome and thyroid dysfunction.

Schuld then spoke about his group's efforts to help the children of Sosnivka, Ukraine, where mothers of 3,000 sick children have been trying for five years to get their children's ill health properly addressed by the authorities after fluorides suddenly showed up in the water supplies.

Other appeals for help have also been received from regions in Pakistan, where similar industrial contamination is occurring. Schuld said UNICEF has, now identified more than 25 countries where fluorides pose a great health concern. Conservative estimates by UNICEF of the people affected number in the tens of millions. Woodruff commented on the severe fluorosis observed in regions of China due to breathing airborne fluoride.

"Health care providers in those areas need to be properly informed as how to deal with the effects of this fluoride poisoning," said Schuld. "This is an urgent global concern. That the York Review and the British Medical Journal have issued press releases worldwide saying fluorides are safe, while these people are suffering incredibly, is simply a crime." He added that a third of the world's population is suffering from iodine deficiency in areas which are identical to endemic fluorosis areas.

Schuld further commented: "Here we have the York Review and its lead researchers running around telling the public that people in fluoridated areas would not be consuming more than 4 mg a day from all sources, while our September analysis of the top-selling tea brands in the UK has shown fluoride content up to 11 mg per litre in tea prepared from one teabag alone."

Meanwhile, any studies showing adverse health effects from areas with levels above 5 ppm in the water were excluded from the Review.

"We urge the people in the UK to ask for an immediate public inquiry into the scientific misconduct clearly prevalent at the York centre," he said.

Woodruff and Schuld urged the listeners to spread this information to as many people as possible, and dedicated the program to the memory of mutual friend Dr John Yiamouyiannis, who suddenly passed away on Sunday 8 October. Woodruff said that Yiamouyiannis will be remembered as one of the most brilliant scientists of the past century.

Plasma, Solar Outbursts, and the End of the Last Ice Age

15,000 to 11,000 years ago Earth experienced a series of climatic fluctuations. It had been extremely cold, with continental glaciers extending much further than they do today, but the climate started to warm. However, temperatures suddenly reverted back and there was a short cold spell, known as the Younger Dryas, before the final warming and the official end of the last ice age.

Based on Greenland ice core data, the Younger Dryas began and ended very abruptly. Its start dates to 10,900 B.C., and its ending (the final warming) began circa 9700 B.C. and may have occurred within an incredible three years; given our inability to resolve the finest details of something that happened so long ago, it may have literally happened overnight.

How do we explain this pattern of abrupt climatic shifts? I once hypothesized that comets were responsible. A comet hitting the land or a shallow ocean, or exploding above the land's surface, scattering dust and debris into the atmosphere, would cause global cooling. Although the initial strike would happen in a flash, it would take some years for the cooling to reach its full extent. This pattern fits well with the cooling at 10,900 B.C. and there is evidence of a cometary explosion over North America at this time.

What about the warming event of circa 9700 B.C.? In years past I speculated that comets hitting deep oceans were responsible. A comet might break the thin oceanic crust, releasing heat from the hot magma beneath. Vaporized and displaced water would rain down on Earth, and tsunamis would wash across coastal areas, warming the planet. But even with a comet, or a series of comets, bombarding the oceans, could the warming happen as quickly as the Greenland ice cores indicate? I think not. But if not comets, what?

Oddly, the indigenous Easter Island rongorongo script may hold the answer. But first we have to consider the concept of the fourth state of matter--plasma. Plasma consists of electrically charged particles. Familiar plasma phenomena on Earth today include lightning and auroras, the northern and southern lights, and upper atmospheric phenomena known as sprites. In the past, much more powerful plasma events sometimes took place, due to solar outbursts and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun, or possibly emissions from other celestial objects. Powerful plasma phenomena could cause strong electrical discharges to hit Earth, burning and incinerating materials on our planet's surface. Los Alamos plasma physicist Dr. Anthony L. Peratt and his associates have established that petroglyphs found worldwide record an intense plasma event (or events) in prehistory.

Dr. Peratt determined that powerful plasma phenomena observed in the skies would take on characteristic shapes resembling humanoid figures, humans with bird heads, sets of rings or donut shapes, and writhing snakes or serpents--shapes reflected in countless ancient petroglyphs. The Easter Island rongorongo script, recorded on antique wooden tablets, is composed of similar shapes as the petroglyphs. Studying them in detail (inspired by my wife, Catherine Ulissey, who first noticed the connection), I concluded that the Easter Island rongorongo tablets (the surviving tablets are copies of copies of copies . . . .) record a major plasma event in the skies thousands of years ago. This, I believe, was the event that brought a final close to the last ice age.

Plasma hitting the surface of Earth could heat and fuse rock, incinerate flammable materials, melt ice caps, vaporize shallow bodies of water creating an extended deluge of rain, and send the climate into a warming spell. The release of pressure that follows the melting of thousands-of-meters-thick ice sheets can induce earthquakes and even cause hot rock under pressure to melt and erupt to the surface as volcanoes. The world was in chaos, and this is the event recorded by petroglyphs and the rongorongo texts.

The plasma event of 9700 B.C. eradicated advanced civilizations and high cultures of the time, and the radiation emanating from the plasma may have affected mental and psychical abilities. This could be the basis for the nearly universal myth of a Golden Age, a time when beings on Earth had mental abilities far surpassing those of later times. The 9700 B.C. event may be the original basis for the Atlantis legends; the timeframe fits well with Plato's account.

Plasma and electrical discharges hitting the surface of Earth may have been responsible for the vitrification (melting into crude glass) of ancient stone structures seen in some parts of the world, such as various hill forts in Scotland (to the right are some photos showing vitrification at an ancient Scottish hill fort, along with the ground plan of such a fort--the vitrification is shown by the dark shading). People cowered for their lives; they sought shelter in caves, under cliffs, in dwellings built of thick stone or carved into mountainsides.

Perhaps Göbekli Tepe was intentionally buried in an attempt to protect it from on-going plasma events.
