Vitrified stones are simply stones that have been melted to a point where they form a glass or glaze. There is much debate in archaeological circles over the ancient examples under study for two reasons. Firstly, few cases are known to have been tested and even if they have been, there are many questions over how they were made.

Glassy rocks form naturally under conditions of high temperature and pressures found in and around volcanoes. Glass or glazes are traditionally created using a furnace. Furnace or kiln examples are found on everyday objects such as glassware and ceramics. Ceramic glazes are created by pasting certain finely crushed stones, sometimes with tinctures, onto fired pots and plates. The whole is then fired to temperatures usually in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade. Many of the ancient vitrified examples are found on objects so large that they cannot be placed in a furnace.

A Track of Vitrified Stone
A Track of Vitrified Stone

Previous analysis concluded that the temperatures needed to produce the vitrification were up to 1,100°C. There are confirmed cases from Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany.

These are mostly forts and buildings with vitrified ramparts. This fusion is often uneven throughout the various forts and even on a single wall. Some stones are only partially melted, whilst in others their adjoining edges are fused firmly together. In many instances, pieces of rock are enveloped in a glassy enamel-like coating, which binds them into a whole. At times, the entire length of the wall presents one solid mass of vitreous substance.

There are many more examples from Malta, Egypt, Iraq, Sudan, South East Asia and others that are speculated to fall into the grouping. However, these have not all been subjected to scientific testing like the European cases. They simply appear to be glazed finishes on equally large objects or on walls that are impossible to fire conventionally.

There has been much discussion about the Inca vestiges in the Peruvian Andes. It mostly revolves around whether the stones are vitrified or not. This article focuses on these Peruvian cases where there are indications of heat treatment.

THE PERUVIAN CASE STUDY

The vitrified examples under study come from famous Peruvian sites, in South America. Without testing, the debate is open to claims of unusual polishing techniques, natural degradation, lava flows and many other odd explanations. The analysis below eliminates some of these ideas.

The vitrified stones of Peru were first brought to popular attention by Erich von Daniken in the 1970s. He noted the vitrification at Sacsayhuaman in his book Chariots of the Gods. Peruvian Alfredo Gamarra had identified this vitrification earlier. The identification and cataloging of these intriguing stones has been carried on by Alfredo’s son Jesus Gamara, and Jan Peter de Jong.

In Sacsayhuaman, there are many other indications of the use of heat. Strange marks on the stones like the one pictured can be found; shiny, completely smooth and with another color to the rest of the rock:

Vitrification appears on different kinds of stones and structures, as the photos show. It is found on the perfectly fitted walls with irregular blocks. It is also observed on walls made with regular oblong blocks. It has been spotted on mountainsides, caves and rocks in situ. The location arrangements vary as well. Some sites are surrounded or overbuilt by walls whilst others have single exposed isolated stones. There seems to have been some very adaptable ancient technology at work.

A list of vestiges where stonework seems to have been treated with this technology include; In Cusco, the walls of Koricancha, Loreto Street, Sacsayhuaman, Kenko, Tetecaca, Templo de la Luna (or Amaru Machay), Zona X, Tambo Machay, Puca Pucara, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Machu Picchu, Raqchi and in Bolivia in Tiahuanaco.

Archaeologists assume that the perfect fitting stones are the most developed style of the Incas. Regardless, there is no explanation of the shiny surfaces that can be observed. These often appear on the borders where the stones join perfectly. It is normally assumed that these parts were simply polished by the Incas.

During many visits to the vestiges mentioned, Jesus Gamarra and Jan Peter de Jong have examined these stones with highly reflective surfaces. They have captured many of them on video. Through personal observations and analysis of the video material, they have concluded that something other than polishing has occurred.

Many cases display some or all of the qualities mentioned below. The vitrified spots show discoloration and smoothness around the particular areas. They clearly look like the stone has been melted just in those spots. A simple flashlight test was developed, to help identify the layers of glaze or glass.

Filming was carried out at night with a flashlight beam passing through the glaze. This shows the reflection and diffraction of the light as it passes through the surface. Sacsayhuaman, Kenko and Loreto Street were all filmed at night using a flashlight or the nocturnal illumination to capture the effect.

The following traits help to identify vitrified stones:

  •  The melted effect is obvious
  •  Reflection is high
  •  The layer refracts, diffracts and diffuses light
  •  A separate vitrified layer is present on the surface
  •  Damaged layers show a ´film´ on the stone
  •  The glazed layer is independent of rock type
  •  The surface is smooth to the touch even if the surface is irregular
  •  There is often associated heat discoloration surrounding the glaze

The diffraction effect can be seen in the video of ‘the Inca Throne’ at Sacsayhuaman. The rainbow effect is clearly captured by the camera. This is directly linked to the light passing through the glass layer and splitting into its constituent parts. After noticing this effect, it was also detected on videos of other vitrified stones. This can be viewed on this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_8ri2fiwI, and on the DVD that will be available shortly.

The DVD ”The Cosmogony of the 3 Worlds” shows an overview of this phenomenon in the chapter on Vitrified Stones. This is available on youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x81-5SWVtUQ

VITRIFIED STONE SAMPLE ANALYSIS

A small sample from the Peruvian site called Tetecaca was collected and then analyzed by the University of Utrecht, Holland.

Inside the Cave there are man made surfaces

The sample is from a rock outcrop above Cuzco. Inside the cave there is an altar formed from rectangular shapes made of the rock. Several lines in the rock have a shiny surface, as if they were branded into the rock. They are on right lines on the wall of the cave. The walls are cut out with curved and rectangular forms in them. These are man made structures, which rules out natural phenomena. The photos show the site.

RESULTS & CONCLUSION

Microscope Photos

The microscope photograph of the sample shows two distinct regions, the surface layer and the body stone. There is a less distinct intermediate area between the two that seems to transition from stone body to surface layer. Samples from all three regions were subjected to detailed analysis.

Spectral analysis
 Composition of the Surface Layer

Spectral Analysis of Surface LayerSpectral Analysis of Surface Layer

Note: The full set of photos, spectra, tables and text can be found in the full article

The body of the stone is limestone, which is not surprising. However, The Vitrified Surface of the stone shows a different spectrum of elements. (See spectra above) The glaring difference is that Silicon is present with much higher concentrations. The trace elements of Aluminum and Magnesium are also significantly higher than the body. Oxygen is also present in double the quantities. The Calcium and Carbon are much lower than the body sample.

The intermediate regions show a gradation between the surface and body of the stone. This implies either the surface layer was somehow ground and mixed with the stone body. The body limestone somehow merged/melted with the surface layer. Alternatively, the limestone constituents could have been a part of the added surface layer.

The surface shows some similarity to Wollastonite, which forms when impure limestone is subjected to high temperatures and pressures. However, the impurities in the surface are not present in the stone body. This indicates that the compounds in the surface layer were added. It appears they were applied and then treated with heat. This option does have some merits, but it is moving towards the techniques of the ceramist.

Whilst the spectra do not show explicitly that the surface is vitrified, the layer does have the composition, sheen, hardness and glassy texture of a glaze. It is very likely that the glaze was made from a ceramic paste applied to the limestone surface. This is reinforced with a comparison to ancient glazed ceramic pottery shards. If an antique ceramic is compared to the spectra of the glaze above there is little to separate the two. In the Paper X-Ray Techniques Applied to Surface Paintings of Ceramic Pottery Pieces From Aguada Culture (Catamarca, Argentina) there are several comparable results. Ignoring the gold leaf and colorants, the key constituents Silicon, Aluminum, Magnesium, Carbon and Oxygen are present in the same ratios.

The glazed results strongly indicate that heat was used to produce the finish. This raises several questions. Even if a layer of a ceramic paste was applied, how was it heated to the requisite temperatures without cracking the limestone? How was the heat produced to treat these structures? Whilst this sample is from a cave, there are similar structures that are outside with the same kind of glaze. The same conclusion may not necessarily be applied to these other cases.

Analysis is needed, but the similarities with the investigated sample and other photographed cases, are clear. It is likely that these other cases are also vitrified. The amount of heat needed to fire the huge stones on which these glazes are found is enormous. In furnaces, the whole body has to be raised to the temperature of the surface glaze.

DISCUSSION

The stones pictured above provoke much debate. Explanations on how they were produced vary from the use of advanced machines, simple metal/stone tools, molded stonework, concentrated sunlight and fire methods. Whilst the analysis above says little about the way the shapes were made, it does eliminate some ideas on the means of producing these exquisite finishes.

Heat is used to form glazes. How the heat was applied is not clear. To create ceramics on this scale, the heat production would have been greater than the normal ceramic methods.

Protzen has looked at these effects and suggested it could be achieved with polishing. To date, only Andesite has been attempted with very limited success. After the analysis of the surface layer above, it is clear that polishing alone will not produce the heat needed to produce a ceramic glaze. This eliminates polishing as a means of creation.

Peruvian Alfredo Gamarra has identified vitrification on many stones and has argued that the ancients had a technology to treat stone with heat and that the stone was soft at the moment of construction. The comparison at the spectrum level with clay and ceramic pastes is interesting. Ceramic pastes and clay are soft prior to being treated with heat.

Conventional geological understanding is not compatible with this idea. However, the impression from the vitrified stonework is that the stone was once soft. In many of the stones, there are places where it looks as if objects or molds were pressed into the stone. The perfect fitting stones in the walls of Cusco and the other Inca vestiges could have been obtained more easily this way.

Another option is the use of sun dishes and concentrated sunlight by the ancients. This is discussed by Prof. Watkins in his 1990 paper on fine Inca stonework. In this seminal paper, his chief concern was the methods of cutting the stone. Since he was proposing intense heat to cut the stones, it was not a great step to consider the stones melted. His conclusions have been much maligned since there had been no analyses performed.

The analysis does support this, but the location of the sample was on a wall in a cave. The ceramic paste had to be heated whilst on the stone vestige. This means light would have to be reflected deep into the cave. Whilst it is possible that the ancients were capable of producing flat mirrors for the task, it does seem complicated. This method could work for stones on the surface, but is clearly limited in this case.

If the stones were fired in a kiln, the glaze could be a result of the extremely high temperatures. The knowledge of ceramics in ancient Peru suggests this is a distinct possibility. This prospect however, only arises with the stones that can be placed in a kiln or stonework that is part of a kiln. The examples laid onto the sides of huge natural rocks cannot have been produced by standard fire techniques. As European studies of vitrified forts and experimental work have shown.

There is the possibility is that the cave itself was a kiln. Pots or vases may have been fired in the cave and the ceramic pastes may have been applied to protect the stone structure. There is much discoloration within the cave and innumerable glazed areas. The comparison to vitrified vestiges in the open air or in places without a smoke escape, leaves many questions.

On balance, it has to be admitted that a method is difficult to define. Further analysis of samples from the other sites needs to be undertaken to confirm the use of heat in all of the sites. However, the sample tested shows that the similarity to ceramic pastes is near certain. It is easy to conclude that heat was used. The treatment method may have been similar to the technology used for ceramic pastes, but on a much larger scale.

The Cosmogony of the Three Worlds: Artefacts of Lost Science from the Ancients

The Cosmogony of the Three Worlds
Artefacts of Lost Science from the Ancients

By
Jan Peter de Jong
Jan Peter de Jong

There is much to say about the history of mankind and of the Earth. On one hand, there are controversial views that range from extraterrestrial influences defended by Erich von Daniken and Sitchin to literal interpretations of the Bible that reduce the history of the Earth to a few thousand years.

On the other hand, we have the Orthodox scientists, who rely on archaeological and geological research, but do not realize that they might base their research on the wrong assumptions: assumptions that Darwinism is true, everything goes from primitive to advanced, and the Earth already has had the same mass, volume and orbital period around the Sun for millions of years.

Until I came in contact with Jesus Gamarra, the son of the late Alfredo Gamarra, I had not realized myself how far off current science might be. Jesus showed me phenomena in the ruins in and around Cusco, Peru. The official view is that everything in the ruins was created by the Inca. There are stunning buildings, made with great precision and often gigantic dimensions, in fantastic beautiful locations. One who sees these ruins for the first time is impressed by them, as I was. One thinks, this is very cleverly done by the Inca, but most will think that there is not much more to say about those old stones.

However, fate willed that I moved to live in Cusco. Because of daily contact with the ruins, such as the famous perfect fitting walls, and by working together with Jesus Gamarra, I began to see things in a new light. One stone is not the same as the others. Jesus told me about the precision, the giant dimensions, the different styles, the phenomenon of 'vitrification', etc.. All of this is repeated in other ruins, in the same way and in the same order, from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman, from the Sacred Valley of the Inca to Machu Picchu. Eventually, it is repeated on the global level; we can see the same phenomena in Egypt.

The point is that we see things, but we do not know how they were made, when they were made, or by whom they were made, an observation that Erich von Daniken also made when he saw Sacsayhuaman for the first time. For him, there were enough reasons to relate all of what he saw to alien intervention. A popular viewpoint is that the Inca could soften the stone with the help of plant extracts. This seems to me impossible to achieve because of the scale of all the phenomena. Besides, where is the plant that could be used in this way? An extremely orthodox view is that the Inca had another sense of time; They, with endless patience and with thousands of people, would have transported the stones and then would have carved them to fit them so exactly. It seems to me that they had better things to do, and also that the scale of the vestiges is such, and the labour that was needed would have been so complex, that this seems highly unlikely.

Actually, none of the above explanations sounded plausible to me. The opinion of Alfredo Gamarra, however, offered a surprising and refreshing alternative. I applied a new perspective to the archaeological sites, human history, and the history of the Earth. The solid foundation for this was laid by Alfredo's archaeological research in Cusco and the surrounding areas. The outcome of this research is the tangible, visual proof on which his further studies and conclusions are based. The DVD ''The Cosmogony of the Three Worlds", which I produced together with Jesus Gamarra, testifies to this. The most important conclusions of this documentary are that all the vestiges in and around Cusco, Peru, show the following aspects:

-There are three different styles to distinguish, and the first style plays a central role, being located under or in the centre of the following 2 styles

-The existence of ''vitrification'', a phenomenon in which the stone is very smooth and highly reflective.

-The presence of a large quantity of stones that seem to be deformed or molded like clay

- the repetition of this all in all ruins in Cusco and its surroundings, but also on a global scale

Alfredo Gamarra came to the conclusion that the 3 different styles matched 3 different periods. The first style is sacred for the styles thereafter. The first 2 construction styles were built in a time when gravity and density were less, and therefore, all materials could be worked on a grander scale with more ease and could then be more easily transported.

The Hanan Pacha time

The first style and period. Called by Alfredo the Hanan Pacha time, meaning Land of the Sky from Above, or the time of Paradise on Earth. This first style, with its corresponding monolithic building style, is seen as especially sacred all over the world. There was reason enough to build great monuments over it, such as the great pyramid of Egypt, which is built over the underground chamber, which is a typical example of this building style. Less gravity may explain how stone could have been modified. Even more striking examples of this architecture are the mountain on which Machu Picchu is built, the stone in the middle of the circles of Stonehenge, and the mountains on which the ruins of Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Sacsayhuaman are built. These examples show how certain areas of the rock come to the surface and were modified by this first culture in a characteristic way.

Another fine example is the Rock of the Dome, the stone inside the mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a sacred monument for Jews, Muslims and Christians. Nowadays it is a piece of rock on which all 3 religions make their claims, but the message of Alfredo is this: One world, one religion, because this stone is sacred, because it is from the beginning time of human history! Alfredo Gamarra said there was a 225 day calendar at this time, a calendar which was discovered on the Sun Gate in Tiahuanaco, near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. So a time in which Earth was closer to the Sun, was smaller and therefore had less mass, resulting in less gravity.

The Uran Pacha time

The second style and period. During the second period it was still possible to make use of the circumstances of lesser gravity; it was also easier to manipulate the stone, but not so much as during the first period. Characteristic of this time is the way that stones fit together perfectly, without the use of a bonding material such as cement between them. These stones can be very large, rectangular or polygonal. Examples can be found all over the world. Very impressive are the walls of Sacsayhuamán.

I could personally see that in Peru the phenomenon of vitrification is related to this building style, as if the stone has undergone a molecular change. This is normally seen on the connection points. Also, other spots on some of the stones can be detected that underwent the same treatment, making it look as if an iron was used to mold the stone. At night, with artificial light, the reflective edges and other spots can be noticed, for example in the centre of Cusco. This style is often built very carefully around or over the first style. During this period, according to Alfredo Gamarra, there was an orbit of 260 days, a calendar equivalent with the Tzolkin calendar of the Maya.

The Ukun Pacha time

The third style and period. The third style is the simplest style. Small stones that were treated with a hammer and chisel, sometimes very precisely so as to seemingly mimic the 2nd style, but never as perfectly fitting. This was in in most cases the work of the Inca in Peru. They too had a lot of respect for the previous 2 styles, as they also built over or around those earlier styles. This is not an underestimation of what the Inca were capable of; they simply had not the technology to do the same. Alfredo Gamarra came to these interpretations as a result of dreams, literature review, research in the field, and study of the Quechua and Aymara languages, the ancient languages of the people living in and around Cusco. A subject mentioned also in Graham Hancock's book “The Fingerprints of the Gods” Alfredo explained how his research relates with the Bible, Atlantis and other lost and ancient cultures. The underlying idea of his theories is the division of the history of mankind in 3 periods, with lesser gravity on Earth during the 2 earlier periods. This comes back through his whole work, and it is what Jesús Gamarra and I decided to explore in the documentary “The Cosmogony of The Three Worlds”.

Once having this vision clear for myself, I found more clues and evidence about a smaller Earth and less gravity in the past. This only strengthened Alfredo's story for me. The most obvious evidence is to be found within biology and geology.

Biology: Megaflora and megafauna. Alfredo Gamarra claimed that the extinction of megaflora and -fauna was due to an increase in gravity. There are several authors who claim the same; a good example is the book by Stephen Hurrell called Dinosaurs and the Expanding Earth. In this book, the author demonstrates that the gigantic dimensions of, for example, dinosaurs, do not fit in our current world. They would collapse under their own weight; it is possible to calculate which dimensions dinosaur's legs should've had, just as you can calculate how thick the pillars of a bridge need to be to carry the weight of the bridge. The heart was also too small to be able to pump the blood around. The birds of that time had wings too large and too heavy to fly (wingspans over 10 metres). Hurrel also shows that there is a tendency from large to smaller in the course of the history of many animal and plant species.

Geology: The Expanding Earth theory is another major theory that I came across during my search for more information. A geological theory that has existed for quite some time and that is experiencing a revival, thanks in part to authors like James Maxlow. Maxlow has presented a major work, called Terra Non Firma Earth. He makes it clear that an expanding Earth is hard to deny with all the evidence he presents. He proves that a smaller Earth used to exist, and that the entire “floating continents model” is wrong ( based on an Earth that through time had the same scale and mass). It is convincing to see how all the continents fit together, not on the Earth with the current dimensions, but on an Earth that is about 55% of the current diameter.

According to Alfredo Gamarra, the Earth indeed underwent a process of growth, not as the Expanding Earth theory assumes (slowly and continually), but with changes of orbit, going from one orbit to the next, each time farther away from the sun, along with a mass increase and therefore an increase in gravitational force. The sun underwent a similar process, increasing in mass, so that in earlier orbits the force of the sun was relatively less, meaning that the effect of being closer to the sun was not so damaging for life on Earth as it would be today.

According to Alfredo, humanity would have been living in the last three orbits (including the present one). He was able to identify the different periods with the different construction styles, differences in lifespans and sizes of people, with the last ice ages, and with different periods that are mentioned in sacred scripts like the Bible.

Gods, Giants, psychic abilities and high ages can be related with gravity. Alfredo Gamarra indicated that humanity during earlier orbits had more abilities (such as telepathy and telekinesis), was bigger, and could live longer. Standard works such as “Human Devolution” and “Forbidden Archeology” by Michael Cremo point toward this same conclusion. What is the effect of gravity on aspects such as health, maximum lifespan and special abilities? One can imagine that gravity is something that pulls us down our entire life, which at the end makes us feel tired, and that at older ages we will be worn out, and our spine will become more curved.

It seems that in space renewal of cells in our body practically stops, as research on Russian astronauts who stayed in space for months pointed out. At current gravitational force, our body renews all its cells every 6 months. It seems there is a limited, maximum number of times that our body cells can renew within one lifetime. This means that under lower gravitational force, the rate of cell renewal would be less, and man could live longer.

Alfredo's first period corresponds to the time of the paradise on Earth; during this time man was (almost) immortal. During the 2nd period lifespan would have been over 1000 years, and during the 3rd period “His days shall be an hundred and twenty years '' - a division in 3 different periods by age, that we can find in the Bible.

The existence of telepathy and other capabilities, ascribed to the gods from the myths and legends of many cultures, we can explain as follows: due to less gravity, everything was less dense in that time, so matter was easier to master by our thoughts. I agree with the principle that there exists a field in which everything is connected with everything, as described in the famous book by Lynne McTaggart, “The Field.” McTaggart proves the existence of this field; it is the universal force, which is also connected to the human spirit and thought. In this way, she explains telepathy as well as distance healing. Today, however, few people realize this principle due to the density of our existence, and apart from some very talented people, we only seem to realize this once we make use of methods like meditation, prayer, hypnosis, metaphysics or the use of drugs.

This brings us back to Alfredo Gamarra. He claimed, for example, that by the change of orbit from the 2nd to the 3rd period, humanity lost its ability of telepathy and had to learn to talk. Before that time, we did not need to talk. It was the time of the Babylonian Confusion of Languages. Thinking in the way of McTaggart, it suddenly became for man much more difficult to make contact with the field because of an increased density by the increased gravitational force.

I hope this gives a good overview of Alfredo Gamarra's ideas about how 3 different periods existed during human history and how this, according to him, relates with the presence of 3 different building styles in the Inca vestiges of Peru and several other places around the world. For more details on these ideas, see our DVD The Cosmogony of The Three Worlds, and the websites mentioned below.
