What’s So Hard to Believe About China Harvesting the Organs of Living People?

What’s So Hard to Believe About China Harvesting the Organs of Living People?

It is difficult to secure a human heart for transplantation. The donor is usually brain dead and on life support, and the donor and recipient must share matching blood and tissue types to prevent rejection.

So Jacob Lavee, a heart transplant surgeon at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Aviv University,  found it hard to believe when a patient in his hospital department in Israel said that he was due in China in two weeks, on a specific date, for a heart transplant.

“I looked at him and I asked: ‘Do you listen to yourself? How can they schedule a heart transplant ahead of time two weeks?'” Dr. Lavee responded.

"The victims of this organ harvesting trade include Uyghurs, and maybe even Tibetans, though most extensive harvesting was carried out against Falun Gong."

That was in 2005. Dr. Lavee recounts the episode in the documentary “Hard to Believe,” the first sustained examination of why the Chinese communist regime’s practice of harvesting the organs of prisoners of conscience—what researchers call a mass murder of at least tens of thousands of victims—is not more widely known.

The documentary, which features interviews with medical professionals, practitioners of the persecuted Chinese spiritual discipline Falun Gong, a United States representative, and others, is now broadcasting on PBS stations across the country.

The film was released on DVD on Sept. 29.

The Good Doctor

For some time Dr. Lavee was aware that Israelis frequented China for kidney transplants — but he always presumed that poor Chinese villagers were the donors. This is itself a highly problematic ethical scenario—but humans can live with one kidney.

Heart donations are an entirely different matter. China was known for using organs from executed criminals, but Dr. Lavee noted that the transplant and execution numbers didn’t tally up.

After doing some research into the source of organ donors in China, he stumbled upon a report written by a Canadian human rights lawyer and a former politician, who investigated allegations of organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in China—specifically, practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline which has been persecuted in its homeland since 1999.

“The new information makes absolute sense,” Dr. Lavee says in the documentary, having become one of the key players in the narrative through his own efforts to limit Israel’s involvement in the activity.

The documentary explores how and why researchers believe it’s clear that mass harvesting of Falun Gong prisoners takes place in China, and seeks to understand why more attention isn’t being paid to the matter—why it’s so “hard to believe,” in the words of Louisa Greve, a vice president of the National Endowment for Democracy, who appears briefly in the film.

Tracing a Blood-Soaked Trail

One answer can be found simply in the nature of the alleged crime: The Chinese regime catalogs and extracts organs from its own citizens in a systematic and brutally efficient manner for sale to wealthy Chinese and transplant tourists.

The victims of this organ harvesting trade include Uyghurs, and maybe even Tibetans, though most extensive harvesting was carried out against Falun Gong.

On July 20, 1999, former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin launched a sweeping national persecution of Falun Gong, a traditional Chinese meditation exercise that incorporates teachings of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

At once, over 70 million Chinese citizens became targets for brutal torture and grinding forced labor. Nearly 3,900 Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured and beaten to death, and hundreds of thousands more remain in forced detention, according to Falun Gong statistics and human rights researchers.

Allegations that the Chinese regime was profiting from organs harvested from live Falun Gong practitioners surfaced in March 2006 after the wife of a transplant surgeon involved in harvesting, and a Chinese journalist, went public with details of the macabre affair.

‘Hard to Believe’ is the first film that spends more time on the investigators themselves, showing that they are essentially reasonable, objective individuals, with no hidden agenda.
— Ethan Gutmann, investigative journalist

Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas and former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific David Kilgour looked into the allegations and tried to disprove them. After considering 33 types of possible proof or disproof, including numerous anonymous calls into China, cross-checking of official transplant numbers, and adopting a simple logical rubric, they concluded in the first ever report on organ harvesting in China that the allegations are true. The Kilgour–Matas report concluded that Falun Gong practitioners were the most likely source for over 41,500 transplantations in the years 2000–2005.

Author Ethan Gutmann witnessed firsthand the suppression of Falun Gong in Beijing in 1999, and started his own investigation into organ harvesting in 2006. In his 2014 book, “The Slaughter,” Gutmann traced the history of the Chinese regime’s organ harvesting practice from the crude 1990s experiments in the Chinese frontier province of Xinjiang, to the organ profiling of live Falun Gong practitioners under the guise of “health checks” in present-day China. Gutmann estimates that about 65,000 Falun Gong were harvested from 2000 to 2008.

This year, the film “Human Harvest” won a prestigious Peabody Award for its exploration of the issue, providing perhaps the most prominent acknowledgment of the organ crimes in China to date.

Murder Mystery

The producers of “Hard to Believe” wanted to present a murder-mystery-style narrative that invites watchers to ask why a human rights lawyer, or an Israeli doctor, have come to such jarring conclusions about a mass murder for commercial gain, led by the Chinese state, over the last decade.

Gutmann was initially skeptical about whether that route would be the most impactful, but was ultimately persuaded. Director Ken Stone and co-producer Irene Silber were “sincere in asking the question I couldn’t answer during the writing process,” Gutmann told Epoch Times in a telephone interview.

“‘Hard to Believe’ is the first film that spends more time on the investigators themselves, showing that they are essentially reasonable, objective individuals, with no hidden agenda,” Gutmann said. “It’s a thinking man’s film on organ harvesting.”

The Usual Suspects

The trick was to “keep it simple,” Stone told Epoch Times in a telephone interview. “Focus on the people tied to the issue.”

“If you tell small stories, interesting stories about the people, it eliminates the issue” of the film coming across as a work of advocacy, added Stone, an Emmy Award-winning director and a former television reporter now based in Minnesota.

Of all the stories featured, Stone found the interview with former transplant surgeon Enver Tohti the most compelling. Tohti, a native Uyghur from the west China province of Xinjiang who now drives a bus in London, confessed in recent years to have carried out live organ harvesting in the summer of 1995 on the orders of his immediate superior.

The stories of Ethan Gutmann, Falun Gong practitioners, and Enver Tohti are easily relatable to an American television viewing audience because they are familiar archetypes—the hard-charging, truth-seeking, skeptical journalist, the human rights lawyer, the victims of a brutal persecution, and “Doctor Zero,” the first surgeon they could find who engaged in the practice, Ken Stone explained in a video interview of the producers.

“Part of the story is Epoch Times, Ethan Gutmann’s works, David Matas, Jacob Lavee,” Stone said.

This Newspaper’s Role

Epoch Times broke the story of the forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in March 2006 and has been closely following developments on the issue.

“Hard to Believe” features interviews with Stephen Gregory, the publisher of the U.S. English-language Epoch Times, an independent newspaper headquartered in New York. It also features Matthew Robertson, Epoch Times lead China reporter who was awarded the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for his coverage of the organ harvesting in 2013.

“We’ve done stories about a reporter who is writing for a paper that most Americans have never heard of but who has written extensively about this, and has even been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists,” Stone said, in a video interview conducted with the producers of the film.

“The organ harvesting story is the story of Falun Gong,” said Gregory in the documentary. “Falun Gong is the most sensitive issue for the Chinese regime. No one in the mainstream press that has offices inside China is covering it inside China.”

In an interview with Epoch Times, Gregory said: “We reported the organ harvesting allegations first and are the go-to source on the issue of organ harvesting.”

Negotiating the Bends

Like many others, director Ken Stone was skeptical of the Chinese regime’s organ crimes when he first learned of it from co-producer Irene Silber in early 2014.

After doing some research, however, Stone felt that there was a story worth telling, and decided to start production just when the World Transplant Congress was being held in San Francisco in July 2014.

Being able to attend the Congress—the largest international event in the field of organ transplantation—was a crucial step for the documentary because the producers were able to meet and interview several key persons for the film, said Kay Rubacek, principal at Swoop Films, which distributes the film.

During production, Rubacek was primarily involved in research and securing interviews, and helped to smooth out the production process by acting as the connection between interviewer and interviewee.

Rubacek, for example, was a troubleshooter keeping the lines of communication open between interviewees and producers for weeks, getting reluctant witnesses to agree to participate.

No small amount of work was put into crafting the documentary’s haunting, pulsing, piano-driven theme by Dafydd Cooksey.

“It’s ominous, foreboding, and there’s a tension in the knowledge being revealed,” said Cooksey, who worked on the score for 12–14 hours a day for a month to produce a score worthy of a murder mystery. “There is something happening, and here’s proof of it happening.”

Cooksey, who also recorded the on-location sound and post-production work, said that the most affecting part of the documentary was from the former surgeon Enver Tohti, who commented on the live organ harvest he participated in.

“As a surgeon, Tohti’s natural instinct is to save lives, but he was told to remove the liver and kidneys of a person who was shot but not dead,” Cooksey said. “What moved me was how years later Tohti showed remorse for doing it: he’d say a prayer for the guy at the mosque or church, or light a candle in a temple.”

Human Harvest: China’s Organ Trafficking

By Leon Lee

Are political prisoners in China being killed for their organs? Dateline has a special investigation into disturbing claims over the use of live donors in the country’s transplant trade.

10,000 organs are transplanted in China every year, yet there are only a tiny number of people on the official donor register.

It’s become a destination for people wanting to avoid waiting lists and get a quick transplant. The industry is said to be worth a billion dollars.

But where are the organs coming from?

“Somebody’s being killed for the organ,” human rights lawyer David Matas says. “There’s no other way to explain what’s happening.”

David Matas and fellow Nobel Peace Prize nominee David Kilgour have spent years investigating the allegations of organ harvesting in China.

He and fellow Nobel Peace Prize nominee, lawyer and politician David Kilgour, have spent years investigating organ trafficking in China.

They believe some of the organs come from members of the Falun Gong movement – a quasi-religious group with millions of followers, which is banned by the Chinese Government.

“Falun Gong, before it was repressed was very popular in China,” David Matas says. “It’s estimated, according to government of China statistics, between 70 and 100 million people, which was then more than the membership of the Communist Party of China.”

Investigators claim thousands of them have been detained by authorities.

“I testify to the atrocious crime that the hospital committed in removing livers and corneas from living Falun Gong members,” says former worker Annie.

“Some of them were still alive when they were secretly burnt in the incinerator that was in the boiler room.”

Falun Gong is a quasi-religious organisation, which started in 1992, but is banned by the Chinese authorities.

Her husband at the time was a surgeon responsible for removing organs. They fled China to escape the work, but he then faced an attempt to kill him.

“Some people in the hospital knew about this, but they were too afraid of being killed to speak up,” she says.

David Matas believes such evidence is the only way of explaining the fast availability of organs.

“Everywhere else in the world it would be months and years,” he says. “When you book a transplant in advance, for a heart transplant, and you go to China and you get a transplant within a few days.”

“I went to the mainland on 25 June. So I waited two to three weeks,” says patient Rourou Zhuang.

She travelled from Taiwan for a kidney transplant, but only found out later that her donor could potentially have been killed to order.

“I was totally shocked to find out about the source,” she says. “I also feel very sad I participated in that. So I thought I should tell my story to let the public know.”

The Chinese Government wouldn’t appear on camera for Dateline's program, but it refutes the claims.

“The main source of our organs is from death row prisoners,” Health Minister Jiefu Huang has said previously in an interview with state television.

However, the Chinese Government did make its own documentary challenging evidence gathered from undercover phone calls for the program.

One doctor, Lu Guoping, replies ‘that’s right’ when asked by an investigator posing as a patient if the organs come from Falun Gong members.

But the same doctor has a different response in the government film.

“I told her that I had never been involved in transplant surgery. I couldn’t answer her, as I didn’t know how they got the organs,” he says.

The Chinese Government refutes the allegations about organ harvesting.

Laws banning transplant tourism to China are already in place in Israel and Spain and are being debated in many other countries.

China has also faced heavy criticism from the UN over the use of death row prisoners for organs, but the human rights lawyers spearheading the investigation want much more action.

“We would like to see all the names of all the doctors that are involved go on a list,” David Kilgour says. “They would know that they have an excellent chance someday of facing the International Criminal Court in The Hague.”

No longer science fiction: Aborted human fetuses harvested to grow kidney organs in rats for transplantation into human patients

human

Human fetal kidneys harvested from aborted babies are being surgically implanted into adult rats to grow new kidneys to be transplanted into awaiting human adults.

This procedure, which is under rapid development, is being framed as a medical breakthrough by scientists who appear to be completely blind to the moral and ethical issues at stake in such a scheme.

"[This] is definitely the first time an actual whole human organ has been grown in an animal, and has sustained the life of that animal," explains Eugene Gu, the founder and CEO of Ganogen, Inc. in Redwood, Calif. "Our long-term goal is to grow human organs in animals, to end the human donor shortage." [1]

LiveScience.com reports, "The research shows that it is feasible to remove a kidney from an aborted human fetus, and implant the organ into a rat, where the kidney can grow to a larger size."

From the Ganogen.com website:

Study results have been published in the Jan. 22 issue of the American Journal of Transplantation.

The ethics question

To its credit, Live Science directly addresses the moral issues surrounding this technology, even offering quotes from a bioethicist who says the practice won't be tolerated. As reported on the website:

Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at NYU Langone Medical Center, said the study itself did not concern him. However, "there is no way we're ever going to use fetal human kidneys or any other solid organs for transplant," Caplan said. "American society is morally uncomfortable enough about abortion that growing organs from fetal remains will never be accepted, and will be banned in state after state."

The researchers said they hope Caplan is wrong...

The Ganogen.com website does not appear to contain any ethics statement defining any limitations on how the developed technology might be used. It appears to company has likely not considered the ethical implications of its research. While there's no doubt the founders of the company have entered this realm with the best of intentions, they appear to be young, brilliant and naive, wholly unaware of what the roads to Hell are paved with.

Here's a picture, also from the Ganogen.com website, showing some of the organs they've managed to grow from kidney tissue harvested from aborted human babies:

Abortion farms and organ factories

Western medicine today is dominated by the attitude of "heroic interventionism" lead by "medical mechanics" who celebrate each other's abilities to grow, harvest and transplant organs across an ever-expanding list of animal and human subjects.

But just because you can achieve such transplantation results doesn't mean you should. In the same way, yes you can genetically engineer food crops to combine insect genes with plant genes and release them into the wild, but it's probably not very wise to do so due to the very real possibility of self-replicating genetic pollution.

What happens if this new fetal tissue organ harvesting procedure becomes so successful that millions of customers line up to buy the new organs? You'd very quickly see for-profit medical corporations setting up fetal abortion farms to harvest their organs for the "organ factory."

Young women would be paid (or kidnapped) to get pregnant and have their unborn babies harvested for the organ tissue. Actually, this step is practically happening today as companies like Stem Express in Placerville, California, already sell aborted human fetal tissue for "medical research."

In Nigeria, a baby farm was already in operation where teenage girls were kidnapped and forced to be impregnated against their will, only to give birth and have their children stolen away for human trafficking profits. "Thirty-two pregnant girls were rescued from a maternity home run by a trafficking ring in the southern city of Aba," reports The Guardian. [2] "The girls, mostly of school age, were allegedly locked up at the Cross Foundation clinic so they could produce babies to be sold for illegal adoption or for use in ritual witchcraft."

U.S. corporations could then purchase the harvested aborted fetal tissue from such "baby factories" being run in other countries, then they'd bring the fetal tissue to U.S. facilities where large numbers of rats (which are mammals) are subjected to the torturous procedure of having their bodies cut open and implanted with the harvested human fetal organ cells in order to grow human kidneys.

Once the kidneys grow to a suitable size, the rats would obviously be killed to harvest those organs, which would then be transported to hospitals to be surgically transplanted into humans for profit. The mainstream media would dutifully celebrate the "lifesaving medical breakthrough" and describe the mad scientists as heroes for humanity.

The medical Matrix: turning a human baby into a profit center for medical corporations

If there's money to be made from harvesting the organs of aborted babies, make no mistake that there are corporations more than willing to profit from the blood money.

Even today, western medicine does not consider a human baby to be "alive" until after it is born... even though an unborn child shows every sign of life that would normally be considered "alive" in a rigorous scientific context. The unborn baby shows a heartbeat, brain activity, cellular growth, nutrient metabolism, waste elimination, muscular movement and even demonstrates emotions and reactions to stimuli. Clearly an unborn baby is alive. This not deniable except by those who are intentionally dishonest.

But thanks to a medical system that can abandon all ethics and declare an unborn baby to be something less than a living human being, there's nothing stopping biotechnology corporations from harvesting aborted human babies for profit.

And because there's no moral boundary against doing this with one baby, there's also no moral boundary against doing this with millions of babies in an "abortion farm" organ harvesting operation carried by a public company with its own stock symbol on Wall Street. Who knows, maybe your favorite retirement mutual fund will buy some shares, too, because all that matters are the earnings per share, right?

Here's a picture of a modern-day chicken meat factory. Replace the chickens with human babies and you begin to get an idea of the future where medical science operates without human ethics:

Watch The Island movie for a preview of how this might play out

In the sci-fi movie The Island, starring Ewan McGregor, the world's wealthy elite pay a biotech corporation to raise human clones in a medical facility as "living organ banks." Those human clones are later killed to have their organs harvested for transplantation into the paying customer.

Much like in our own world today, the clones are controlled through a system of total media propaganda. Regular media broadcasts remind the clones that it's unauthorized to venture outside the city because the entire world has been destroyed in a nuclear war and is now contaminated with radiation, they're told. This is conducted in exactly the same way citizens of our modern world are scared into government compliance through totally fabricated or engineered stories of terrorism.

When clones are ready to have their organs harvested, they are told they've "won the lottery" to retire in luxury on a tropical island. In reality, they are euthanized and cut open to have their organs harvested for corporate profits.

This scene from the film shows one clone waking up during the organ harvesting procedure and attempting to escape:

The cloned citizens of The Island are brutally controlled by the corporation and forced to live a life of total obedience and conformity. Even their diet is rigorously controlled by the corporation, but not out of any desire to promote health. Rather, it's a desire by the corporation to make sure its "product" remains healthy, harvestable and sellable.

All along, the cloned humans -- which are considered corporate "property" -- are kept wholly oblivious to the real world and told how lucky they are to be the last of the survivors of the nuclear war (which never happened). This is the modern-day equivalent to President Obama telling us all how good the U.S. economy is doing and how lucky we are to be living in America.

  The Island

(2:09:20) @ https://youtu.be/JJRxvSnzQng

What was once sci-fi may soon be reality

The greatest problem with science today is that it almost entirely conforms to corporate interests. As a result, it has no respect for ethics or morals. Whatever makes the most money becomes the new "science" of the day, regardless of the implications for human suffering or widespread tragedy.

Tinkering with life -- via genetic engineering, mass deployment of agricultural chemicals, cloning or organ harvesting -- is a territory fraught with ethical landmines. But motivated by greed, corporations will drive humanity right through a landscape littered with such landmines, oblivious to the violations of ethics, human rights or environmental integrity they are unleashing.

Make no mistake: If it were medically feasible right now to generate millions of dollars in transplant profits from the body of a two-year-old infant, the biotech corporations would have already declared two-year-olds to be "not yet human" and there would be massive farms running right this very minute harvesting organs from two-year-olds. Any person who protested the practice would, of course, be instantly labeled, "anti-science."

Case in point: There's money to be made right now from injecting two-year-olds with toxic metals such as mercury and aluminum, both of which are still intentionally manufactured into vaccines. Any person who protests the injecting of children with mercury is immediately labeled "anti-science" today, even though the science clearly says mercury is toxic to human neurology. Calls for removing neurotoxic substances from vaccines are met with derision by the vaccine industry, which insists all children should be injected with dozens of vaccines no matter how toxic the ingredients in them.

The exploitation of children's bodies has always been a profit center for medical corporations, and human organ harvesting, growing and transplantation may simply be the next step up for an industry deeply rooted in the evil that comes from ignoring medical ethics while prioritizing medical profits.

In effect, we are all living in The Island and being lied to on a daily basis about what's real. The truth, it turns out, does not support the profit interests of the all-powerful corporations.
