Sometimes the most beautiful natural phenomena can have the most devastating consequences. When the sun ejects hot charged particles into space, the aurora borealis is created here on earth. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora [Sunrise] or the Greek goddess of dawn, especially in the high latitude regions caused by the collision of charged particles in the solar wind with magnetic fields high in the atmosphere.

AG:     Hi. I’m Arnie Gundersen. And today we have a real special honor. We have with us a renowned, best-selling author and an MIT grad, Mat Stein. Mat’s here to talk about electromagnetic pulses, commonly called EMP’s and solar storms. So Mat, I’d like to welcome you to Fairewinds and also I’d like to ask the first question. What the heck is an EMP?

MS:  Well, thanks for having me on. An EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse. So what happens in the pulse in an EMP, whether it’s a highly charged plasma coming from the sun in a coronal mass ejection, like the sun burps and a bunch of sun stuff is launched into space at 1,000 times faster than our rockets fly – it can go out through space – and then on rare occasions they actually hit the Planet Earth. And on even rarer occasions – we have about 100 very significant geomagnetic storms in the last 152 years – but we’ve had two extreme geomagnetic storms in the last 152 years. 

And so the problem on our planet in kind of starting to connect the EMP and solar storm is that the last time we had a really big storm on our planet was in 1921 – the great geomagnetic storm of 1921. 93 years ago was the last time we had a really big one. So since then our grid has grown and our technology’s grown. And we have these Achilles’ heels in the grid now that didn’t exist in 1921. But now we have this giant interconnected grid with these massive transformers that are super susceptible to the EMP. Well, on top of that, we have microelectronics. 

Now a solar storm doesn’t really affect the microelectronics because it doesn’t have the E1 and E2 effect of the EMP. So the EMP is much more devastating to electronics on a smaller level; on the area of the affected level. But the solar storm is much more devastating in a different way in that it doesn’t really mess up your small electronics. It won’t cause immediate meltdowns of your nuclear power plants. What the solar storm will do is it will fry much of the grid over most of the Northern and Southern hemispheres for a long, long, long period of time. And the problem is that these giant transformers that I’m talking about that are susceptible both to EMP damage and solar storm damage – they’re roughly 100 tons each; they’re 10 million dollars apiece roughly, and they’re custom built and custom designed. And right now, there’s a 3-year waiting list to have one. In other words, when one fries – and they do on rare occasions – they burn up eventually – it takes a year to get a replacement for it – or three years. When things are going well or if it’s a rush order, you can get one in a year. But normally, like if you just wanted to expand your grid, you’ve got to think 3 years ahead. So in the event of an EMP, you’re going to probably lose dozens of these transformers in a single EMP; perhaps even 50, 60, 70. 

In the event of a massive solar storm, which is guaranteed to happen – the last one was 1921 – it was only 60 years before that to an even bigger storm, the 1859 Carrington Event. So this is a guaranteed event. I mean talk about an end-of-the-world scenario – end of the world as we know it, certainly. I mean an EMP itself is bad enough when you think about we’re going to have failed infrastructure. Think about 100 Hurricane Katrinas happening at the same time. Think about how our response was to a single Hurricane Katrina. Now imagine 100 Hurricane (4:11) Katrinas. The entire half of the United States – eastern half of the United States, the most densely populated part of the United States – it’s like a Hurricane Katrina has hit that entire place, the infrastructure is destroyed, the grid is destroyed, the electronics are destroyed, our manufacturing abilities are destroyed – everything is down for a long, long time, because there aren’t enough spare parts in the world to fix that stuff. For years. (4:40)

AG:    Let me tell you a story. I was in Washington at the RIC – the Regulatory Information Conference – in 2012, and I had a chance to ask a question of then NRC Chairman Jaczko. And I asked him not about a bomb EMP but about the solar storm electromagnetic pulse and what was the NRC doing about that. And he said it was the last thing on his agenda. Ahh. He just basically felt it was – compared to the other issues on his regulatory agenda, it wasn’t something he was interested in.

MS:    Well, I have a letter in my notes right here from Dr. William Graham. Now Dr. William Graham – I keep wanting to call him Billy Graham, but that’s a different doctor – Dr. William Graham was Ronald Regan’s Chief Science Officer for several years, his Chief Science Advisor to Ronald Regan. He spent more than 30 years in the Department of Defense Nuclear Program. He’s a Ph.D. physicist. He was the Chairman of the Bipartisan EMP Commission that was appointed by Congress to study this problem. And he has a letter dated October – that was received by the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it was addressed specifically to him – in October of 2011, a few months after Fukushima had happened. And he is warning them of the specific issue of multiple Fukushima-like events in the event of either a terrorist artificial EMP or a solar storm, and along the lines of the 1921 geomagnetic storm. And he said, well, what’s the chances of this happening. Well, scientifically, the chance of an extreme geomagnetic event, which is a grid-collapsing event over most of North America, is 1 in 8 every decade. So I don’t know about you, but if somebody told me oh, don’t worry about boarding that plane, there’s only a 1-in-8 chance it’s going to crash, I would not get on that plane. But what we’re being told is every single decade, we have a 1-in-8 chance that the world as we know it is going to end, unless we fix it. 

And there is a solution – a partial solution – to protect the grid at least. And everything in our world depends on the grid, all these things I’m talking about. When the grid is down nothing is working. And we can protect the grid of the price of a single B2 bomber, a single stealth bomber. And so far, they’re only talking about it. For 50 years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warned that the levees around New Orleans were going to fail – not if they were going to fail, but they were going to fail when the next category 3 or stronger hurricane hit. They said it’s not a question of if, but when. We don’t know when that next storm’s going to hit. So for 50 years they said it’s going to happen, it’s going to be a catastrophe and we can fix it. It just takes money. And for 50 years, they were ignored; in fact, at one point they approved the money and then the politicians shuffled it into something else. Because it wasn’t sexy. It’s not like having a nice new amphitheater or a big sports arena or something like that to show. It’s just fixing these levees. And everyone looks – well, they’re not broken, right? Nothing’s happening; everything’s okay. (7:48) So we’re in that situation right now where the scientists and engineers, the Department of Defense, Oakridge National Labs, Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs – these guys all agree this is a real and genuine problem. 

So what’s the chance? One in eight chance every decade. It’s been 9 decades since the last one. It was 6 decades before that to the one before that. So we’re living on borrowed time right now. No one knows. Right now we had a very quiet solar maximum. Nothing happened. But the truth of the matter is, solar maximum, solar minimum – a killer solar storm can happen anytime in the solar cycle. It’s just more prone to happen in the maximum and so yeah, we had a very quiet maximum, this last solar maximum. It doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen next week. In fact, earlier this year, there was a coronal mass injection from the sun and a very quiet solar maximum that went off in a direction not too far from the earth. If it had hit the earth, it would have been at least as strong as the 1921 storm and it would have been game over. And it went off, but it didn’t hit us; it just missed us. And if it had hit us, it would have been game over. (8:59)

AG:  So we have the sun burps, sends these high-energy particles, hits the earth’s atmosphere and that then hits the electric grid and causes a huge electric spike that burns out all of the –

MS:     Not all. Many of hem.

AG:     Many of these huge transformers. And that’s one in eight per decade and we’re nine decades into this. So it’s going to happen – and basically we’re living on borrowed time. As I understand it, there was one of these that did knock out the transformer at nuclear plant already.

MS:     Yes. In 1989, they had a geomagnetic storm that was strong. But how strong is strong? It is 1/10th as strong as the 1921 storm. So the scientists who look at different things and evaluate different storms geologically, the 1989 storm was 1/10th as strong. And it wiped out one of these massive transformers at a nuclear power plant in New Jersey. It wiped out one of these massive transformers in the Province of Quebec and one in the United Kingdom. So what was the result? Well, in Quebec in the first 30 seconds – the first 30 seconds of this geomagnetic storm, there were 15 simultaneous failures in the grid, one of which being a massive transformer. The entire Province of Quebec was blacked out for 9 hours. Six million people for 9 hours. And there was some parts of Quebec were blacked out for 2 days. Well, that’s one – one transformer. The MetaTtech study, which was funded by the Department of Defense and Oakridge National Labs oversaw it and the National Science Foundation – these guys all pooled together, and they did a computer modeling of the grid. And they based their analysis on the 1921 storm. The 1859 Carrington Event was like the granddaddy of modern storms. That was 50 percent stronger. 

They anticipate that’s a once-every-five-hundred year event. So they’re not as worried about that. The 1921 they assume is a once-in-ever-75-to-100-year – somewhere in that range – basically we’re due for that sized one. (11:03) So that event is 10 times stronger than the event that wiped out 3 transformers between Quebec and the United States and the UK, who lost 3 transformers. Now in 2003, there was an event – it was lower in intensity but longer in duration than the 1989 event. And it wiped out a transformer in Sweden and it wiped out – it caused – 14 transformers eventually failed from the overheating and the loss of insulation in the coils. 14 transformers in South Africa failed. Okay. So what does 14 transformers mean? For an entire year, the only way South Africa could function without 14 transformers was they had to ration power. So when you’re going to work in South Africa in 2003, imagine going to work and for 5 or 6 hours 2 or 3 times a week during your workday, there’s no power. There’s no lights, no air conditioning, no phones, no internet, no escalators, no elevators, nothing’s working. And the entire country had to switch power around the country for an entire year to keep the country functioning, and that was the only way they could do it.

AG:     And that was for a baby storm.

MS:     That was for less than 10 percent – 1/10th – less than 1/10th of the strength. And you know as a scientist and engineer that if you ramp up the strength of an event by a factor of 10, it’s not like you have 10 times more failures. You have – because all of a sudden, you start exceeding the threshold of far more things. If you double it, like you pass the threshold of damage on many more – you double it again and way more. So I honestly think that – and I talked to John Kappenman who did the – wrote the report for the MetaTech study and he admitted that they were very conservative in their estimates. They didn’t want anybody jumping on it. And so when he said like, oh, we’re only going to collapse the grid to 2/3rd’s of the country, that’s really long-term collapse. Because see, in the year 2003 also, they had a massive blackout on the eastern coast of the United States. And at first they said oh, the terrorists, the terrorists – the terrorists did it. Well, it turned out there were some killer trees. You’ve got to watch out for those trees. They’re very highly trained.

AG:     Killer trees, right.

MS:     Right. So you had a killer tree that caused a cascading failure from the Niagara Plant and it took out power to 50,000,000 people in the United States. So there was no EMP, there was no terrorist act. It was just a killer tree that some power lines snagged into. Snagged into, shorted out and caused cascading failure. In 1996, we had killer trees in Oregon. We had a very hot day. The whole western coast was in a heat wave, air conditioners going everywhere, the grid totally maxed out. And in the extreme heat, some power lines expanded and sagged and shorted in Oregon, cascading failure. The entire west coast out of power, some places as long as a couple of days. Most west coast for 7 or 8 hours. On that day, my brother and sister-in-law were driving through the central valley of California with their AC on. They ran out of gas. So they pulled into a gas station and it was like – oh. And everybody’s sitting in the shade going like this, at the gas station. (14:19) And they’re like, what the hell’s going on. And well, your money machine card’s not working. The cash registers were locked closed. No one could buy a drink. No one could buy a gallon of gas.

AG:     And the pumps that pump the gas of course isn’t working –

MS:     Isn’t working. Right. So nothing was working. And it was 110 out that day. You could fry an egg in the sun on the pavement. And they’re stuck for 5 hours until the power came on. Imagine if you’re stuck for one day. Imagine this. Imagine you go out one night and you look up in the sky and you’re in South Carolina and you see a scene you’ve never seen before in your life. The sky is blood red – orange, gold streaks, shimmering. And it’s just awesome. And your view of the sky is so amazing because there’s no city lights. And it’s like wow, this is really amazing. And there’s no city lights that day. And you go try and get on your computer and there’s no internet signal, there’s no phone signals. And you think, wow. And then the next day goes by and it’s still lit up like this. In 1921, the sky was lit up from the North Pole to Hawaii and Puerto Rico and from the South Pole to American Samoa. So the only place the sky wasn’t lit up at night in the whole planet was a very narrow deep tropical zone right around the equator. And in 1921 that lasted for two nights and two days. And in 1859, there were two coronal mass ejections. So the first one hit the planet, got it spinning really, really hot electromagnetically speaking. And then just as things are starting to cool down, the second coronal mass ejection – a one-two punch – came and hit the planet and it got it electromagnetically charged up for another 5 days. So for a total of a week, the sky was jut lit up. People were waking up at 2 in the morning in Colorado in the back country and getting their gear ready, thinking was daybreak, that the sun had come up.

AG:     I understand they could actually see that in Havana.

MS:     In Havana. That’s right. So you’re talking – and then start your calendar going. It’s like oh, nuclear power plants are required to have a week’s worth of backup fuel on hand – because the grid’s never down for that long. Right? It just doesn’t happen. So here you’ve lost 370 transformers in the United States, a couple of thousand in the world. That’s 20 years of manufacturing capacity when the world’s working right. At today’s current capacity, we could replace those transformers in only 20 years. But most of the world that makes those transformers is going to be down just like us and struggling in mass chaos. So you’re talking 20 years at full capacity when the world’s working well to make those transformers to replace what fried in a single storm. So you’re talking a situation where things are down for a long time. So a week later, nuclear power plants start running out of backup fuel. Unless they manage to get the government and the military organized to guarantee fuel arriving to 104 nuclear power plants in the United States, you’re going to start to see Fukushima-like things happening. Maybe they’ll keep fuel running to some, but all 104? When there’s chaos, when (17:34) there’s hijackings, when nothing’s working, do you honestly think that trucks are going to just roll down the road with diesel fuel and provide all these power plants with fuel to keep them going? Now some of these reactor plant guys called me up and said, well, the NRC says that we’re mandated to have a week’s worth of fuel on hand but we have a month on hand. Okay, so you’ve got a month. You think the world’s going to be back together in a month? The EMP Commission estimates it’s going to be 6 to 9 months at the minimum and probably multiple years to get things back up and running in any decent way, shape or form. So you’re talking chaos and the world as we know it being very different for a long period of time. And if they’re not 100 percent successful at keeping these nuclear power plants going – and that’s in the event of a solar storm. See, in the event of an EMP, it’s a different worry. Because in the solar storm, the good news is that at least your control systems – digital control systems and things are probably still working. If you can get backup generators going and keep them powered, then you can probably maintain some control. Because it’s just the grid is down and the whole infrastructure with cascading failures over the next couple of weeks; everything will fall apart.

AG:     So what that means is if a solar storm electromagnet pulse wipes everything between the big wires and the transformers, but the nuclear plant on the other side of the transformer doesn’t see the solar storm pulse in a solar EMP.

MS:     We don’t know for sure because none of that stuff was around in 1921 when the last extreme solar event happened. But the scientists believe that your digital electronic stuff is mostly going to survive. They’re not saying there won’t be some pulses that are going to wipe out some digital stuff, but in general, that stuff is going to survive. What’s going to fry is these massive transformers that interconnect our grid; that keep the grid flowing. And those have caused – big grid failures in South Africa, caused power failures in the UK, power failures in Sweden, power failures in the United States and it caused the entire Province of Quebec to black out short term. But the problem is that when you lose so many of these transformers – not one or two but hundreds of transformers – then your interconnecting grid is going to collapse and pretty much shut down everywhere. And then they’ll be able to disconnect pieces of the grid and restart areas if they have lots of local power generation and if they’re not heavily densely populated and they survived without a lot of local damage from the solar storm. Then they’ll be able to disconnect and restart certain areas. But most of the heavily populated and industrialized parts of the country will have enough density in them in the modeling that those areas will suffer long-term collapse; not just like oh, everything went down for a few days and we were able to get them restarted in some places. So to be able to restart pieces of the country, but large zones of the country will have so much damage they won’t be able to restart.

AG:     So the NRC’s relying on there being diesel deliveries in basically social mayhem to keep a nuclear plan running beyond the 7th day. (20:48)

MS:     The NRC is relying on positive thinking. Wishful thinking. Their wishful thinking that it’s just not going to be that bad; that these guys are gloom-and-doomers and it’s just not going to be that bad.

AG:     The best emergency planners in the world are the Japanese. They know that tsunamis happen; they know that earthquakes happen. And the emergency planning system in Japan failed miserably, horribly. So for us to rely on studies from the NRC telling me that don’t worry, we’ll get the diesel fuel to these nuclear plants once a week for the next 3 or 4 years until there’s no – we don’t have any concerns here – is really, really wishful thinking.

MS:     Now that’s a solar storm.

AG:     That’s a solar storm. That’s not in our control and it’s a one-in-eight decade kind of event. (21:50)

MS:    Right, it’s a one-in-eight decade kind of event; its been nine decades since the last one. We’re living on borrowed time.

AG:     So how do you live knowing all this stuff?

MS:     People say, well, you seem like a cheerful guy. It’s like Mr. Gloom and Doom and yet you’re smiling. I basically do what I can. I feel like I’m here to serve in whatever way I can and I do my best. My motto that I like to end things on – I’ll just tell you right now because you asked me that question – my motto is, I ask everyone to do their best to change the world and do their best to be ready for the changes in the world. And so I’m doing my best to educate people and wake them up and I see that we have multiple challenges, that we’re collapsing our world – business as we know it are killing the planet, are destroying the natural systems that maintain life as we know it on Planet Earth and keep humans and mammals alive. And we also have this thing where we’ve created these systems that are highly susceptible Achilles’ heels to both EMP’s and solar storms. And so it’s kind of like rolling the dice, like what we’re doing is going to collapse the planet in the not-very-distant future if we keep it up the way we’re doing it. And we have these Achilles’ heels that could be an instantaneous collapse if we don’t do the right thing. 

Now here’s the silly part. For the price of a single B2 bomber, they have invented these large vacuum tube devices and they tested them at the same – Curtis Brian Burtenbach – I think is his name, or Burnbach. And they have the biggest EMP testing facility in the world. They do a lot of testing for the DOD and he’s extremely worried about this. For good reason. He’s very worried about both EMP and solar storms. So they have invented a large vacuum tube device that reacts fast enough and can handle such huge amounts of power that it can almost instantaneously shunt power around these transformers into earth and protect them from both EMP and solar storms. So we can’t protect all of our electronics from an EMP. Most of our electronics won’t be affected by the solar storm if we can keep the grid up. So if we can at least keep the grid functioning, then we can keep pumps going, we can at least keep part of our world going, at least with manual stuff, even though a lot of the digital stuff will be gone. So it’ll be rough, but it’s doable. 

So we could for 2 billion bucks, we could protect all of these massive transformers in the grid, and the grid from meltdown in the event of a solar storm or an EMP. And for another billion bucks or so, we could put (24:21) EMP-hardened containers with backup critical electronics, backup generators and store a year’s worth of fuel at each of our 104 nuclear reactors. So yes, it would be chaos. It would be rough even if we did the right thing. But it wouldn’t be the end of the world. But if we do the wrong thing, then either an EMP or solar storm could basically be – an EMP would be the end of America as we know it. And a solar storm would be the end of the world as we know it. But we could fix it.

AG:     It reminds me of the tsunami at Fukushima. The tradition in Japan has seen tsunamis as high as 100 feet and certainly tsunamis as high as 30 feet. But in light of that, they built a tsunami wall that was only 15 feet high. So we have the opportunity to build our tsunami wall against solar detectors because we know it’s coming and it’s not going to break the bank. A couple of billion dollars is problem solved.

MS:     And here’s the part of the other – it just kills me – is NERC – North American Electric Reliability Corporation – sounds like the good guys. It’s a private corporation from industry insiders in the electric utilities and they talk about protecting the grid and grid reliability. And then FERC which is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is the federal government governing board that kind of follows everything and regulates stuff. So what happens? Well, NERC is kind of worried about the grid. They sponsor this conference and they look at threats to the grid and whether it’s from terrorists and digital threats – killer trees, various things, and they determine in this that the EMP’s and solar storms are the number 1 and 2 threats that could really be serious. They’re called black swan events. They happen now and then, not so often that you’re really worried, that you’re paying much attention to it, but when they happen they can be huge events. So they publish a report called the HILF report – High Impact Low Frequency Report. And they talk about these dangers. Now after that, in the government, they put the Shield Act in the Congress. And the Shield Act is saying that private industry is going to pony up 2 billion dollars out of their bottom line, out of their pocket and they’re going to fix the grid. Well, NERC goes wait a minute. That’s a lot of money for private industry. That’s a lot of money out of our bottom line. So what does NERC do? Well, they basically fire the guys that wrote the HILF report and said how dangerous this was. They come out with a new report that says everything’s okay; don’t worry, we’ve got it covered. And they tell the Congress. And they tell the Congress just what they want to hear and they say, oh, well, this is terrific, this is so wonderful. What new modeling did you do? What new scientific study and data did you take to do this? Oh, we didn’t do any new modeling. Well, what about the MetaTech Corporation study, the one that Sandia and Oakridge National Labs oversaw and sponsored and the National Science Foundation and Department of Homeland Security? What about that? And they said well, that’s proprietary computer code in the MetaTech study so we couldn’t really evaluate it. But we talked to our members and we decided we got it covered. Now I tell you, when three transformers blew in the 1989 event, which was 1/10th as strong as the 1921 event, which was 50 percent weaker than the 1859 event and yet they’re telling you they have it covered. (28:00) So then guess what they just did? In June, they published a standard. FERC – the Federal Regulatory Commission – came to NERC and said, could you please write us a safety standard or protocol for solar storms. So they said sure. So they wrote the standard and they got it passed and NERC rubber stamped it and the standard tells people what to do in the event of a solar storm. And the standard says every utility has to spend an average of 20 hours training somebody every year to make sure we implement the standard correctly. Now the standard doesn’t mandate that they put any hardware in, no current detectors to tell them how big the storm is and how dangerous it is to the grid. So they have no idea how to make a make-or-break decision, like is somebody just going to go in and shut down power to the eastern United States. And if they’re wrong, that’s the end of their career, for sure, if they’re wrong. And so – and yet – and how are they going to make that decision when they have no hardware implemented to tell them how serious the storm is? Plus, in 1989 in the first 30 seconds of the storm, 15 simultaneous hardware failures, including one of those massive transformers – in the first 30 seconds. What human being is going to go out and be able to make a decision in 30 seconds of that scale, of a massive scale, and make the right decision? It’s totally impossible.

AG:     So we’ve got these satellites that are watching the sun. And the satellite sees this huge solar flare that likely is going to hit the earth, but maybe it’ll miss. And so the scientists go to the president and they say well, maybe this thing’s going to hit, maybe it’s going to miss. We need a presidential edict to shut the grid down anticipating that this thing will happen. Or, if it misses, we’ll all look like fools so let’s keep the grid going. That seems to be the only solution we’ve got in place right now.

MS:     That’s correct. All we have now is you’re totally dependent upon – because let’s face it, no human being is going to make that decision on their own. And so in terms of a solar storm – a fast-moving solar storm can hit the planet in 12 hours. And the average solar storm is 2 to 3 days. So fast storms are 12 hours. One day, day and a half. Slow storms can hit as late as 5 days. But figure in general you’re going to have about 24 to 48 hours’ notice at most. And those are people watching the sun that are going to have to make those decisions, get to the right people, make massive decisions. And the chances that they’re really going to protect everybody are pretty slim.

AG:     So you’ve written a couple of books about this topic. Can you let our listeners know what they might want to read.

MS:     Sure. This book is my more recent book, called When Disaster Strikes. And it’s an emergency preparedness and survival manual. And people who read these kinds of things think it’s pretty much the best out there. And so this book has chapters specifically devoted to EMP and solar storm, survival chapters and prepping and strategies and what they are. This bigger book is my first book, the second edition widely expanded in 2008, of when technology fails. And this book, the subtitle describes it very well. It’s called The Manual for Self-Reliance, Sustainability and Surviving the Long Emergency. And so this book is kind of half eco green sustainability and half how you plan for and deal with varying levels of things falling apart in the world. So in my mind, if things really fell apart, I would much rather fall back on 18th Century technologies, live like Thomas Jefferson days or Abraham Lincoln days than go back to caveman days and eating worms and grubs and foraging for everything and living that kind of existence. It took me about a year to decide that maybe it was a good idea and maybe I could do it; another year to read a whole bunch of books and write a proposal and find a publisher; and then a third year to work 70 hours a week, 7 days a week. I only worked 6 hours on Sunday. I worked 12-hour days the rest of the week and 6 hours on Sunday and did that for 9 months to finish it off. And then I put another year into updating it in 2008. And it was like 50 percent bigger by word count. So this is my itty bitty big book and then the smaller book right here.

400 Chernobyls: Solar Flares, EMP and Nuclear Armageddon

There are nearly 450 nuclear reactors in the world, with hundreds more either under construction or in the planning stages. There are 104 of these reactors in the USA and 195 in Europe. Imagine what havoc it would wreak on our civilization and the planet’s ecosystems if we were to suddenly witness not just one or two nuclear melt-downs but 400 or more!

How likely is it that our world might experience an event that could ultimately cause hundreds of reactors to fail and melt down at approximately the same time? I venture to say that, unless we take significant protective measures, this apocalyptic scenario is not only possible but probable.

Consider the ongoing problems caused by three reactor core meltdowns, explosions, and breached containment vessels at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi facility, and the subsequent health and environmental issues. Consider the millions of innocent victims that have already died or continue to suffer from horrific radiation-related health problems (“Chernobyl AIDS”, epidemic cancers, chronic fatigue, etc) resulting from the Chernobyl reactor explosions, fires, and fallout. If just two serious nuclear disasters, spaced 25 years apart, could cause such horrendous environmental catastrophes, it is hard to imagine how we could ever hope to recover from hundreds of similar nuclear incidents occurring simultaneously across the planet. Since more than one third of all Americans live within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant, this is a serious issue that should be given top priority![1]...

Tokyo Contaminated & Not Fit for Habitation, Doctor Says



All 23 districts of Tokyo contaminated with radiation, worse than at Chernobyl after the accident, and blood cells of children under ten are showing worrying changes; the WHO, the IAEA & the Japanese government cannot be trusted.

In July 2014 Dr Shigeru Mita wrote a letter to his fellow doctors to explain his decision to move his practice from Tokyo to Okayama city in the West of Japan [1]. In it, he appeals to their sense of duty to answer the anxieties of parents in Japan who do not believe the information coming from the authorities. He says “I must state that the policies of the WHO, the IAEA or the Japanese government cannot be trusted.” and “if the power to save our citizens and future generations exists somewhere, it does not lie within the government or any academic association, but in the hands of individual clinical doctors ourselves.”

Mita claims that all 23 districts of Tokyo are contaminated, with the eastern area worst affected — up to 4 000 Bq/kg. (The becquerel is a unit of radioactivity. One Bq is the activity of a quantity of radioactive material in which one nucleus decays per second.) These findings confirm what the nuclear physicist Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Nuclear Education found in 2012, when he picked up five random soil samples in Tokyo from between paving stones, in parks and playgrounds. The levels of contamination were up to 7 000 Bq/kg; in the US, anything registering these levels would be considered nuclear waste [2].

While practising in Tokyo, Mita also discovered changes in the white blood cells of children under 10.


Independent science & independent reporting in Japan outlawed

In December 2013, the Japanese parliament passed a bill whereby public officials and private citizens could face ten years in prison for divulging “special state secrets”, and journalists, five years, for seeking to obtain classified information. The bill is widely interpreted as a way of preventing sensitive information about Fukushima (among other topics) reaching the Japanese public and by extension the rest of the world [3].

The independent organisation Reporters without Borders has downgraded Japan in its world press freedom index from 22nd place in 2012, to 53rd in 2013 and to 59th in 2014, following the passing of the state secrets bill. Reporters without Borders say that Japan“has been affected by a lack of transparency and almost zero respect for access to information on subjects directly or indirectly related to Fukushima” [4].


Nuclear lobby put in charge

Back in December 2012, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) whose mission is to promote the peaceful uses of the atom, signed agreements with Fukushima Prefecture, Fukushima Medical University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. These “Practical Arrangements” have in effect, handed over the management of the post-accident situation at Fukushima and its health consequences to the nuclear lobby. Among other clauses regarding cooperation and funding, we read that “The Parties will ensure the confidentiality of information classified by the other Party as restricted or confidential” [5].

But this should come as no surprise. Anyone who doubts the heavy hand of the nuclear lobby in the “management” (i.e. minimisation) of nuclear accidents should read the account by the physicist Bella Belbéoch entitled “Western responsibility regarding the health consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe in Belarus, the Ukraine and Russia” [6]. The initial Soviet cover up of the accident is well known. Less well known are the “stages of submission” in which the IAEA forced the Soviets to accede to their demands to minimise estimates of the health effects of the accident. In a series of manipulations and bullying tactics, they forced the Soviet officials to divide their estimates of the health effects by a factor of 10. One Soviet delegate, Legassov, committed suicide, a few days after he capitulated to the IAEA demands, on the 26th April 1988, the second anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.


A travesty of reporting on risks and cancers

How has the nuclear lobby reacted to Fukushima? A preliminary assessment published in 2012 by the World Health Organisation (but actually emanating from the IAEA) managed to draw optimistic conclusions, while ignoring two critical groups, the workers at the TEPCO plant, and the people who were evacuated from the immediate area (See [7] WHO Report on Fukushima a Travesty SiS 55). Then in 2013, the UNSCEAR report [8] described the risks of people developing thyroid cancer, leukaemia and breast cancer as barely discernible, even though the rates of childhood thyroid cancer in Fukushima prefecture are already 40 times what would be expected [9].

The UNSCEAR report has been criticised by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War because it consistently underestimates the radiation dose received, underestimates internal radiation, ignores the vulnerability of the human embryo to radiation, ignores hereditary effects, ignores the unreliability of the dose received by workers at the stricken plant, and only considers some cancers as potential health effects, whereas the experience of Chernobyl shows that every vital organ and system of the body is affected [10].


Raising the ‘safe’ limit of radiation

The Japanese people are faced with a government whose response to the dangers of the radiation was to increase the acceptable limit from 1 mSv/year to 20 mSv/year and who are now encouraging people to move back into areas that had previously been evacuated. (The millisievert is a unit of radiation dose. Before the Fukushima accident, Japan, like the rest of the world, respected the limit of 1 mSv/year recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).) Meanwhile, the nuclear lobby wants to see the resumption of nuclear power in Japan as quickly as possible. This is not an atmosphere in which doctors are encouraged to report health effects that could be the result of radiation, and certainly not in Tokyo, whose residents have been led to believe that they have nothing to fear.


Changes in white blood cells in children

Mita began work as a general practitioner in Tokyo in the 1990s. In the letter to his colleagues explaining his decision to move his practice from Tokyo to Okayama City, he claims that contamination in the eastern part of Tokyo is 1000-4000 Bq/kg and in the western part, 300-1000Bq/kg. He compares these levels with Kiev, in Ukraine, after the accident at Chernobyl, of 500 Bq/kg, and with measurements taken before the 2011 Fukushima accident at Shinjuku, the site of the Tokyo municipal government of 0.5 – 1.5 Bq/kg. He says that

Tokyo should no longer be inhabited, and that those who insist on living in Tokyo must take regular breaks in safer areas.

Mita conducts thyroid ultrasound tests for parents who are concerned about the health of their children but he is now concerned about the results of another test on children under 10, the differential white blood cell count. This test is undergone routinely by workers in the nuclear industry who are exposed to radiation. Blood is produced in bone marrow, which is one of the organs most vulnerable to radiation. The white blood cells consist of five different kinds of cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinocytes, basophils and monocytes, and it is the relative numbers of these five cell types that is examined. Mita has found a decline in neutrophils in children under 10, in areas that are not considered to be highly contaminated or even contaminated at all. His patients come from Northern Kanto, the area around Tokyo and including Tokyo itself [11].

"The pediatricians’ general textbook says that the reference value of neutrophils for healthy children (6-12 years old) is between 3000 and 5000. 3000 is considered as the threshold value.” Mita says. “But the mean value of neutrophils of the children who have visited our clinics since the accident has decreased to 2500. … It is lower than the threshold value of 3000. I think this points at a serious problem."

Mita explains that although the decrease in neutrophil does not directly cause lowered immunity, it is “the last bastion of the immunity system” and could play a role in fatal illnesses such as septicaemia in the case of aggressive colds. “In the summer of 2011, there were many children with bloodshot eyes; and what we saw most were children with dark circles under the eyes. We also had increased occurrence of sinusitis. Previously, these patients got better soon after they were given proper treatment; however, we are seeing more cases of sinusitis accompanied with mild case of asthma continuing for longer periods. And when these children spend some time in the West, they get better. If at all possible, I would like them to move away from East Japan.”

In adults, he has found increased nosebleeds, hair loss, lack of energy, subcutaneous bleeding, visible urinary haemorrhage, skin inflammation, and coughs. He has found an increase in infectious diseases such as influenza, hand, foot and mouth diseases and shingles. “We also see more patients with diseases that had been rare before; for example, polymyalgia rheumatica is a disease common among those above age 50 and contracted by 1.7 people out of every 100,000. Before 3.11, [the date of the accident at Fukushima] we had one or less patient per year. Now, we treat more than 10 patients at the same time.” Dr Mita wonders “Could these be the same symptoms of muscle rheumatism that were recorded in Chernobyl?”

Finally, Mita says that the radioactive contamination of Tokyo is increasing because of the Japanese government’s policy of transporting radioactive waste from the Fukushima zone all over Japan for incineration or burial. The Japanese government and the nuclear authorities claimed that filters on the stacks of the incineration plants would remove most of the radioactivity, but this is not the case, and in the opinion of many, it is adding to the contamination. Arnie Gundersen, for instance says, “They are creating 100 to 1000 times more radioactive material by burning debris than keeping it in concentrated form” [12].


To conclude

Mita is talking about his perceptions of the changes in health of a population living in an area that is not considered contaminated. It will be all too easy to dismiss his findings. He himself is not optimistic. He acknowledges that to prove any of his suspicions would require teams of doctors, and expensive research projects to compare groups of people, their radioactive contamination and the illnesses from which they suffer. That’s something simply beyond the reach of any single physician. In other words, “it’s impossible under the present state to collect the kind of data that would be printed in a prestigious science magazine. Still, as long as I know that something strange is clearly happening, I can’t just sit here doing nothing.”

And here is Professor Yablokov talking about the difficulties that doctors and scientists experienced in the Chernobyl territories, to prove a correlation between radiation and illness [13]: “The demand by IAEA and WHO experts to require “significant correlation” between the imprecisely calculated levels of individual radiation […] and precisely diagnosed illnesses […] is not, in our view, scientifically valid. […] We believe it is scientifically incorrect to reject data generated by many thousands of scientists, doctors and other experts who directly observed the suffering of millions affected by radioactive fallout in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, as “mismatching scientific protocols.” It is scientifically valid to find ways to abstract the valuable information from these data.” Yablokov goes on to list the ways in which this could be done.

But it was not done in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, and, in this way, the true health consequences of the Chernobyl accident remain hidden. The 2 million people, including 500,000 children still living in the worst contaminated areas around Chernobyl suffer a myriad of illnesses. (According to the Ministry of Health and Sciences in Belarus in 2000, 85% of the children in the contaminated areas were ill, whereas that figure was 15% before the accident in 1986 [14].)

Mita has made a brave decision. The pressure on health professionals and other citizens in Japan to remain silent about the health consequences of Fukushima, will lead to a health catastrophe there — not now, but in the decades to come.

I'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. I'm going to shout out my window at the jackhammer across the street to drown it out. In Japan where I live you would probably get in trouble for public disturbance but endless construction noise is perfectly acceptable: day, night, weekends, holidays and Christmas.

The other day some of my Japanese university students were shocked when I showed them the classic documentary film which is available on YouTube: “911 Mysteries.” Before viewing the film they told me that politics is “boring” but once they watched it and learned how 911 was a blatant false flag operation, they were energized with curiosity and nearly jumped out of their seats. They mentioned that Japan had used false flag terror in the 1930s in order to invade Manchuria and claim it as its own. These students were making connections, creating mental patterns based on the substantially unbiased evidence I had presented to them -- they were learning.

Since many still accept the official story of 911 it is important for us to spread understanding as 911 has hastened the New World Order of domestic and international oppression. It also represents the cognitive dissonance in the public mind which in the same way accepts that nuclear energy is a benefit for mankind.

Because of media blackout and government propaganda, most Japanese are in a state of amnesia regarding the Fukushima nuclear disaster and its radioactive consequences. One older student who was taking my class insisted that it was good to buy radioactive food from Fukushima in order to support the farmers (my idea would be to send them a donation, yes, but don't give yourself cancer). She also insisted that the nuclear disaster could not have been averted. When I recited ample evidence that it could have been she huffed “I don't believe it.”

David Lockbaum of the Union of Concerned Scientists listed many ways the damaging affects from the tsunami to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant #1 (FNPP#1) accident could have been largely avoided had Tepco (Tokyo Electric Power Company) taken some simple steps (1).

Many people I encounter believe that small amounts of radiation are nothing to worry about. Very small amounts of incidental radiation (not to mention the innumerable other synthetic toxins in our mad made environment) may not be immediately life threatening-- but at what point does the bioaccumulation of the ongoing flood of contaminants in our global environment create havoc for the transgenerational health of diverse species including humans?

At least in Taiwan, another nuclear powered country, they are double-checking products from Japan to make sure they pass the radiation test (2).


Japan's Ambivalence


I won't address the complex history of Japanese international relations, but we can safely say that Japan is caught between a rock and a hard place, or would that be between the BRIC nations (Brazil; Russia, India and China) and the US/British/Israeli-Zionist nuclear hammer? In my opinion Japan would be better off maintaining good relations with both power blocks.

However, Japan with the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party - the CIA's party of choice) and Prime Minister Shinzo “I love nukes” Abe as obedient puppet to the US-Zio Power Configuration is coerced into continuing to promote nuclear power as a technical and political agenda, even if Japanese citizens are opposed. Abe and the right wing loonies also have a dream of avenging the bitter defeat in WWII.

In the same way that Japan is both imperialist (to Asia) and occupied nation (to US military bases), Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1872 (3) and is today both a US and Japanese colony that suffers under their double hammer of military and political hegemony (4). Okinawa has even been “nuked”-- the US lost a hydrogen bomb that slipped off an aircraft carrier that still lies on the bottom of the ocean off Okinawa's coast (5).


Fukushima: Dispossession Or Denuclearization?


The sad story of the dispossession of the Japanese people from their country by the nuclear industry, coupled with the challenge of denuclearization is spelled out in our excellent new book entitled: Fukushima: Dispossession or Denuclearization? (6). I played a role in organizing and contributing to the book, and am proud of the wide range of talented minds that have come together to tackle the issue. *(Proceeds from the book will be donated to the lawyer's fund to help fight for the rights of Fukushima children who have been displaced by the disaster, tossed aside like disposable human garbage by Tepco and the government.)

Our lead editor Majia Nadesan wrote a synopsis of the anthology book in an article for Veterans Today:

We pose the question starkly: Humanity must choose between denuclearization or dispossession. We document that nuclear power and weapons are connected and their complex fundamentally dispossesses citizens of liberal guarantees, including rights to property, free speech, and the pursuit of happiness. We explore crisis management of the Fukushima disaster to demonstrate dispossession of rights of property, free speech, and the pursuit of happiness, through examples that include lost livelihoods and Fukushima children’s rising rates of thyroid cancer, among other topics....

We disclose strong public support in Japan and elsewhere for decentralized alternative energy production and we describe oligarchic energy industries’ efforts to maintain centralized control when challenged by the decentralizing production tendencies of alternative energy, such as solar.... We are concerned that in the absence of public activism the choices made by governments and industry will prioritize short term profits and vested interests. 'Dispossession' is the cumulative effect of these decision criteria in action. Nuclear remains seductive in our Hobbesian world of vying nation-states, despite myriad acknowledged hazards, including aging and decaying infrastructures, recurrent nuclear 'accidents,' unceasing contamination, and terrorism. Nuclear seduces even when its effluents threaten the ecosystem and, perhaps, even the human genome (7).

Decommissioning Fukushima In 40 Years?


In the wake of the 3.11 nuclear disaster, Japan immediately shut down all of its approximately 50 reactors out of safety concerns. But today the government is intent on restarting as many as possible to reduce their oil import costs.

The question remains, if you are a chronic alcoholic, how can you regain health by drinking a bottle of vodka for breakfast? I know a Russian man whose father lives in Moscow and is 80 years old, drinks vodka and smokes chronically -- yet is doing well living in his run-down hovel. Maybe excessive drinking is the solution.

Presumably, if Japan were safe for nuclear reactors, the initial accident would have been solved and confidence restored, but in fact, the “Fukushima cleanup [is] going painfully slow” (8).

For example, “[r]emoval of melted fuel from Fukushima No. 1 reactor [will be] delayed until 2025” but this number of “2025” is just a ballpark estimate (9). If we compare the situation of Fukushima with Chernobyl, it is obvious that the Fukushima is going to be no picnic.

I have never seen an understandable (or honest) analysis of how Tepco expects to remove the melted fuel from the three destroyed reactors. In 2012, the radiation was 10 sieverts per hour near the reactor buildings and it still is today. If you gauge progress by the half life of cesium 137 you are looking at 90 years before it is decreased to 1.25 sv pr hr-- is that low enough for human workers to go in there and play around with?

A simple comparison of Chernobyl shows that the 40 years estimate is pure poppycock. While there are time tables for removing fuel from units 4, 5 and 6; units 1, 2 and 3 (where extensive damage occurred) are in a much worse situation. Assuming Japan can remove the fuel rods from the pools of the three destroyed reactors (1, 2, 3) where there is massive ambient radiation at the buildings, how will they remove the corium that that has melted through the containments? If the Ukrainians can't remove the corium from its one destroyed reactor, according to what logic will Japan be able to? If the technology exists (it doesn't), why isn't it being shared? Is national security more important that international security for all humanity and the planet?


Does Chernobyl's "safe confinement” of corium actually makes it so?


The sarcophagus [at Chernobyl] locked in 200 tons of radioactive corium, 30 tons of highly contaminated dust and 16 tons of uranium and plutonium. In 1996 it was deemed impossible to repair the inside of the sarcophagus as radiation levels were estimated to be as high as 10,000 rontgens per hour (normal background radiation in cities is usually around 20-50 microröntgens per hour, and a lethal dose is 500 röntgens over 5 hours). A decision to replace the sarcophagus with the New Safe Confinement was taken, and a project to reconstruct the enclosure is underway (10).

* Chernobyl: one reactor destroyed, corium still hot to handle 28 years later and it the plant is on solid granite foundation;

* Fukushima: three reactors destroyed, corium emitting 10 sieverts per hour near the reactor buildings and the plant is built on soft fill -- over a flowing aquifer and near the ocean!


Volcanic Dangers


In addition to ongoing uncertainty and constant leakages of radiation at FNPP#1 (157 billion becquerels per day into the ocean), there is volcanic activity threatening the nationwide reactor restart agenda.

Volcanoes are pesky geological formations that do not follow free market neo-liberal logic, given that the Earth was bestowed to the top 0.01 percent of the world's people to make money from, this is an inconvenience. Volcanoes may be credited for creating the archipelago of Japan itself, so the Shinto Gods must be thanked of giving us a place to live, even though it is seismically unstable one. While Japanese Prime Malefactor Shinzo “I never met a nuke disaster I didn't love” Abe is certain nuclear power is completely safe -- others differ. The Japan Weather Agency noted that the “[v]olcano near Sendai nuclear plant is shaking and may erupt” (11). Earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes, all safe.

The mayor of the town that is set to restart the reactors claims that his reactors are “100 percent” safe. “ 'I believe the plant can 100 percent cope with a tsunami and earthquake on the scale that hit Fukushima as well as a possible nuclear accident,' Iwakiri said.... His assurance that the Sendai plant is absolutely safe is at odds with the NRA's opinion” (12).

The fact that there was a powerfully destructive volcanic eruption recently at Mount Ontake in Nagano prefecture and that there is a pattern of seismic unrest and volcanic eruptions around the world in recent times, and that many geologists do worry about the mixture of nuclear power plants, volcanoes and earthquakes is cause for concern (13; 14). But like a crazy driver barreling around a 45 degree turn at full speed with his eyes shut, our leaders seem hell-bent on having another accident.

The Tohoku Non-Reconstruction Destruction Industry


The Northeast region of Japan that was flattened by the 3.11 tsunami
was featured in a new documentary film called “3.11 - Surviving Japan” (15). I give the documentary 3 out of 5 stars (making an independent film must be tremendously difficult) and although some of it recycles video images from the destroyed cityscape scenery and is overly melodramatic, the film also brought to light original information and interviews about the difficulties of the clean up and impact from the tsunami and nuclear disaster on people's lives.

This hardship is documented in a new report: “Tsunami evacuees caught in $30 billion Japan money trap.” Three and a half years after the disaster thousands of refugees are still living in cramped and inadequate temporary housing units.

Thirty billion dollars in funding for roads, bridges and thousands of new homes in areas devastated by the tsunami in Japan three and a half years ago is still languishing unspent in the bank (16).

It is understandable that logistical and bureaucratic issues will have hampered rapid progress with a problem of this magnitude (17). Houses are not being built quickly enough due to rising costs and labor shortages. I wonder if the government's initial underestimate of the cost of housing is not due to profiteering among those that might be able to make a buck on other's misery. What shadowy interests and agendas are at play here? The entire construction industry (Doken Kokka, or “Construction State”) is a triad between government bureaucracy (Ministry of Construction); heavy industry and the political right/organized crime sector. The revelation that Japan Atomic Power Co., secretly donated 1.54 billion yen to a city government is just one instance of the financial corruption that inhabits the country (18).

The Fukushima disaster could be an opportunity to develop renewable energy and greener construction practices but the government as so far squandered it. Freelance journalist Winifred Bird who lives in Japan reports with a keen environmental perspective about the construction industry's monstrously anti-environmental practices:

In the years leading up to the massive tsunami of March 11, 2011, it seemed that Japan’s coastal ecosystems could hardly decline in health any further. Decades of coastal engineering had divided land from ocean, turned quaint seaside towns grey with concrete, and pushed once-familiar species like loggerhead sea turtles and common orient clams towards extinction. Nearly half of the island nation’s perimeter was modified in some way; cliffs comprised most of what remained untouched....

Then came the once-in-a-thousand-year tsunami. Walls of water swept over the coast of northeastern Japan, claiming more than 15,000 lives and destroying hundreds of thousands of buildings, together with 60 percent of seawalls. In the rubble-covered wasteland that remained, scholars, activists, and fishermen alike saw a chance to rethink how people live on the coast.

Instead, national and regional government bodies are moving to recreate the concrete coastline that existed before. Reconstruction plans in heavily damaged Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures call for a string of stunningly tall and wide seawalls. Some have already been built; many others are in the final stages of planning. A second layer of raised earthen banks topped with pine trees is also planned in many places. And with Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic administration promising a major infusion of funding for disaster prevention projects nationwide, new seawalls are in the works well beyond northeastern Japan.

The goal is to protect human communities along the coast. But ecologists, environmentalists, and some coastal residents say the plans are an environmental calamity (19).

So while thousands of people are being forgotten in their temporary housing, money is being prioritized to pour concrete and repaint the coastline in gray. This supplies jobs to construction workers and large payouts to heavy industry. We see the same mistake being repeated as with the opportunity to rethink energy policy. There is a clear lack of creativity and forward thinking on the part of with the old boy network lining their pockets with taxpayer largesse.


Insult To Injury: Tepco Profiteers


Pillage the public with the other hand and with the other block to guard against liabilities. Tepco and the government practice a hard hearted niggardliness (in Japanese: “ketchi” to be a mean spirited cheapskate) for anyone seeking economic compensation for their losses. In one case a woman has been “urged to repay nuke disaster compensation after she enters college outside Fukushima” (20). This is nominally to prevent brain drain, but you can't blame people whose towns have been destroyed for seeking opportunities elsewhere.

In the meantime Tepco predicts a 1.3 billion dollar pretax profit for the year even though they have been heavily subsidized (quasi-nationalized) by the government (21). In the real world criminals are punished for their bad behavior but in the world of “too big to fail” corporate crimes are rewarded and the bigger the crime the bigger the reward. We have seen this with the multi-trillion dollar Wall Street bailouts and too many other examples to mention.

The costs of Tepco's incompetence at Fukushima are passed onto taxpayers, so why not give them the ultra-pleasant double shaft by upping their electricity rates as well (22). It matters not that democratization and free competition from solar and other renewable sources could contribute to the national energy solution (23). Life style, housing, work, energy, they're all related.


Olympian Monument To Greed


A billion dollars here, a billion there, pretty soon we're talkin' real money. The 2012 British Olympic stadium was built for about one quarter to just a fifth the proposed cost of the new Tokyo Olympic stadium. The new “Tokyo stadium for 2020 Olympics could cost up to ¥300 billion,” 3 billion dollars (24). A famous Japanese architect I saw on TV said the original 1964 Olympic stadium could meet the needs of the games by being refurbished for just a fraction of the cost of a new stadium.

The Tokyo Shimbun documented the estimated cost increases from the time the Olympics was decided upon to the present day. In order to persuade Tokyoites that the original cost was not so formidable, the real plans to line the pockets of construction companies and investors were kept secret and only gradually unveiled.

'New National Stadium' "Total Construction Cost - increased another 90 billion yen. Changes in New National Sports Stadium Total Construction Cost: Spring 2012 - 100 billion yen (estimate at the time of start of planning); July 2012 - 130 billion yen (rough calculation for start of design competition); Oct. 2013 - 300 billion yen (rough calculation if constructed according to design, it was discovered); Nov. 2013 - 178.5 billion yen (announcement of plan for a roughly 20% downsize); May 2014 - 162.5 billion yen (announcement of basic draft plan); Now - 250 billion yen (rough calculation by Maki Fumihiko); For contrast, main London Olympic stadium cost about 63 billion yen (486 million pounds at the yen-pound rate at the time of construction) (25; Translated by Tony Boys).

I wonder if the reason the Japanese public is so easily hoodwinked is because of the greater participation of civil society in the UK which managed to minimize the Olympics Rip-Off (ORO) through oversight and regulation. In Japan civil society is marginalized and kept weak and inept.

ORO is an old scam: The “[n]egative impact of 1964 Olympics [was] profound... The 1964 Tokyo Olympics had a profound impact on the capital city and the nation [including] the environmental and human impact that resulted from hosting the event” (26).

People in our neighborhood in central Tokyo have complained that they think the Olympics construction will pull funds and labor away from needed projects such as building parks, schools, bicycle parking lots, community centers and other badly needed public facilities (not to mention the cleaning up of Fukushima) that the public has already paid for with tax money.


Floundering Economy


Efforts to solve the Fukushima nuclear crisis and rebuild Tohoku have been less than stellar thus far if not appallingly lacking. Even though the 2020 Olympics are many years off, the LDP led by Prime Malefactor Abe is hoping the Olympics tax payer Feeding Frenzy For Crony Criminals (FFFCC) will help revive the economy. In the meantime the Bank of Japan inject 80 trillion yen (800 billion dollars) a year into the stock market mainly through bond sales (27). This bout of money printing was meant to stave off deflation and justify a higher sales tax.

Anyone familiar with the way central banks operate in recent years will be wary of such recklessness. So called “Abenomics” was determined to be a flop back in the summer of this year (28) as the public has grown increasingly skeptical of progress due to rising consumer prices not met with salary increases.

Financial analyst Charles Hugh Smith writes in “Anatomy of a Failing State: Japan's Budgetary Nightmare”:

Once the global economy rolls over into contraction, the tide will recede and Japan's fiscal and monetary bankruptcy will become painfully apparent. What do you get after 25 years of stagnation and Keynesian Cargo Cult monetary stimulus? A failing state, that's what. The intellectually bankrupt ruling Elites of Japan have no solution for Japan's slow stagnation, as real reform would diminish their wealth and power. So their only 'solution' is to double-down on monetary stimulus: flood the enfeebled Japanese economy with more credit and fiscal stimulus, a.k.a. building bridges to nowhere... But reality isn't as immobile as failed policies. While Japan's ruling Elites fiddled away the past 25 years propping up sclerotic cartels and phantom loans, Japan's population has aged and its primary sources of wealth creation have atrophied (29).

The goose that laid the golden egg is dying of radioactive cancer.

Even as Abe's “ministers [are predictably] hit by more scandals” and his “political ratings fade” the rampage against the Japanese middle class and the enfeebled democracy of the country continues (30; 31). I like what someone in the comment section at the Japan Times wrote for its pithiness:

rossdorn: The huge majority of Japanese will never vote Abe out of office. First, because it is rude to criticize authorities. If someone becomes Prime Minister, he must deserve it.Second, Japan is a one party democracy, there is no alternative. And third, Abe will already have been out of his office for some time, by the time the next election happens (32).

Minamisoma city council member Koichi Oyama voiced some deep secrets about Japanese cultural traits after the Fukushima disaster had doused his town's children with avoidable plumes of radiation:

I would like to explain something historical to better your understanding. Japan used to be ruled by a king, the emperor. Parents and teachers told children the best thing they could do was die for their country. Kamikaze pilots in the war embodied this spirit. In World War II they always told us we were winning every battle. No one knew about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The same thing is happening now. The current government not telling people what is happening is the same we have had since World War II. Keep your country alive by killing yourself. I think the way to save the children at Fukushima is to get the world involved. If we don't protect our children now, it will be too late when we are the second Chernobyl. Not allowing the children to escape is murder (33).

Just in case the media were to get too bold, the government is happy to censor information vital to nuclear damage victims while Abe carries out his “Assault On Press Freedom” (34; 35). While the Japanese parliament focuses on important matters such as proper dress code for women (36) (how dare women get involved in politics anyway), the country's infrastructure is in dire need of maintaining and rebuilding (37; 38; 39). But Abe's Caligulian dream of an extravagant Olympics stadium must be achieved.

The same problems essentially plague any modern “democracy” in the West where money rules politics and governments are slaves to special interests, central bankers and corporate power and the people are cannon fodder for wars of aggression.

In line with recent decades of right wing politico-economic trends that have swept the world in recent decades (eg., Reagan-Thatcher era and beyond), Japan's once robust middle class is being sacrificed as “Japan defense budget request highest ever as Abe boosts military [while] [o]officials seek ¥5.05 trillion [over 50 billion dollars] amid Abe's security push” (40). While small compared to the military budget of the US, led by Zionist Neo-cons and their willing puppet and amateur golf enthusiast, Barack “Nobel Peace Prize Winner and I never met a war I didn't love” Obama, for Japan it is their “biggest [military] budget ever.” Liberals who support Obama claim Republicans are worse than Democrats, I say “Republicans are the worst, but Democrats are just as bad.” “Obama [once] Promised a 'World Without Nuclear Weapons,"' but [he] May Now Spend $1 Trillion on Upgrades” (41).


Collapsing Social Structure


The overall trends for Japan's middle class are not optimistic. The Japan Times reports that “[i]rregular workers now account for 38 percent of the workforce and the average salary of an irregular worker is much lower than that of a regular full-time employee” (42). Furthermore, “[l]ow-wage part-time workers [are] increasing” (43; 44).

The trend is common: “[p]art-time work [is] dominating jobs in the United States, Canada, and Japan” (45). In the UK “[g]oing to work is more stressful than ever” due to excessive work load and the threat of randomly being fired (46).

Due to the Bank of Japan money printing, the weakening yen has driven up prices five times faster than wages are increasing (they aren't increasing at all). In addition, increasing sales taxes are walloping consumer's wallets when they go to the shop (47; 48; 49).


Struggling Students


Because “Japan’s low education budget places financial burdens
on students” (50) “[p]oorer students [are] dropping out in Japan.”

More and more students are being forced to drop out of universities, colleges and vocational schools because they cannot afford tuition, according to a new education ministry survey. The economic downturn means many young people can no longer afford higher education. More students than ever before, most of them from less well-off families, are finding that the dream of studying must be given up because they cannot pay for it. The education ministry survey of 1,163 of 1,191 Japanese public and private universities, two-year colleges and vocational schools found that nearly 80,000 students permanently left higher education in 2013. The number of students who left college temporarily was nearly 70,000. Lack of money was the top reason given by students who quit or took leave (51).

Is this what Japanese people worked so hard for during the decades of the “economic miracle” -- to see it all whither away?

In the US not only is higher education absurdly overpriced, it is largely an embarrassment of intellectual mediocrity if not quackery. US university educator Anthony DiMaggio sums it up in his essay “Academic Fraud and the Ponzi Scheme of 'Higher Learning' ”:

Most research that is published is simply not important enough to read, and this reality speaks to the tremendous resources being wasted at public and private colleges and universities (52).

The modern university system rewards professors for carrying out obscure, non threatening research into niche specialization areas as opposed to socially and politically relevant areas of inquiry. Tenured professors have cushy -- sit on your bum positions -- while the bulk of teaching is done by the underpaid and job-insecure irregular teaching force.


Depleted Ecosystems


Our planetary ecosystems are being destroyed by the modern capitalist system and by participant countries, companies and consumers. Satellite photos from space show the destructive effects of fishing by trawlers that are scrapping the bottom of the oceans, while on land mindless Japanese and Chinese consumerism promotes animal poaching and deforestation in Congo, one of the last great rainforest ecosystems on Earth (53; 54).

It is more urgent than ever to wake up our fellow travelers to the dire consequences we face. How ironic that all the free energy we could ever need is readily available if only we could set ourselves free (55).

*Post script: I have heard it said that Israel sabotaged Fukushima to get revenge on the Japanese. According to the Jerusulem Post (http://www.jpost.com/Defense/Israeli-firms-cameras-recording-Japanese-nuclear-core) the Israeli Magna corporation provided security at Fukushima at the time of the disaster. I question the veracity of the article (which may have been posted in order to spread confusion among conspiracy researchers). My guess is it is a lie! Why would Japan need to employ Israelis when Japan is one of the most high-tech countries in the world and their nuclear power program is so carefully guarded against prying eyes? I have never seen a reference to this Israeli presence at Fukushima in either the Japanese or American press. Japan may not have refuted it publicly because they fear the Zionists. I stand to be corrected and welcome independent verification of this story. However, the Israeli Mossad live by deception, muddying the waters, divide and conquer and confusion-causing tactics. Most of what “intelligence operatives” do is not very intelligent, but is the deliberate spreading of lies for geopolitical ends.
