The Utopian Millennium?

Human culture will change in the next millennium as a result of conscious evolution - a significantly different way of life. For instance, we humans will voluntarily decrease our population so that we all may live in the most powerful and beautiful places on the Earth.

But remarkably, many more of these areas will exist in the future, because we will intentionally let the forests go uncut so that they can mature and build energy.

By the middle of the next millennium humans will typically live among five hundred year old trees and carefully tended gardens, yet within easy travel distance of an urban area of incredible technological wizardry.

By then, the means of survival food stuffs and clothing and transportation will all be totally automated and at everyone’s disposal. Our needs will be completely met without the exchange of any currency, yet also without any overindulgence or laziness.

Guided by their intuitions, everyone will know precisely what to do and when to do it and this will fit harmoniously with the actions of others. No one will consume excessively because we will have let go of the need to possess and to control for security.  In the next millennium, life will have become about something else.

Our sense of purpose will be satisfied by the thrill of our own evolution-by the elation of receiving intuitions and then watching closely as our destinies unfold. A human world where everyone has slowed down and become more alert, ever vigilant for the next meaningful encounter that comes along. We will know that it could occur anywhere: on a path that winds through a forest, for instance, or on a bridge that traverses some canyon.

Can you visualize human encounters that have this much meaning and significance? Think how it would be for two people meeting for the first time. Each will first observe the other's energy field, exposing any manipulations. Once clear, they will consciously share life stories until, elatedly, messages are discovered. Afterward, each will go forward again on their individual journey, but they will be significantly altered. They will vibrate at a new level and will thereafter touch others in a way not possible before their meeting.

Yet I also knew that throughout history many visionaries had glimpsed such a world - Marx for example - yet no way had been found to create such a utopia. Communism had become a tragedy. I couldn't imagine how the human race could get to the place considering human behavior generally. Our natural pursuit of the truth will lead us there. But to grasp how this movement will occur, perhaps it is necessary to visualize the next millennium?

Think about what has occurred already in this millennium. During the Middle Ages we lived in a simple world of good and evil, defined by the churchmen. But during the Renaissance we broke free. We knew there had to be more to man's situation in the universe than the churchmen knew, and we wanted the full story. We then sent science out to discover our true situation, but when this effort didn't provide the answers we needed right away, we decided to settle in, and turned our modern work ethic into a preoccupation that secularized reality and squeezed the mystery out of the world.

But now, we can see the truth of that preoccupation. We can see that the real reason we spent five centuries creating material supports for human life was to set the stage for something else, a way of life that returns the mystery to existence. That is what the information now returning from the scientific method indicates: humankind is on this planet to consciously evolve. And as we learn to evolve and pursue our particular path, truth by truth, the overall culture will transform in a very predictable way.

Once we reach the critical mass, and the insights begin to come in on a global scale, the human race will first experience a period of intense introspection. We'll grasp how beautiful and spiritual the natural world really is. We'll see trees and rivers and mountains as temples of great power to be held in reverence and awe. We'll demand an end to any economic activity that threatens this treasure. And those closest to this situation will find alternative solutions to this pollution problem because someone will intuit these alternatives as they seek their own evolution.

This will be part of the first great shift that will occur, which will be a dramatic movement of individuals from one occupation to another-because when people begin to receive clear intuitions of who they really are and what they're supposed to be doing, they very often discover they're in the wrong job and they have to jump to another type work in order to continue to grow. During this period people will sometimes change careers several times during their lifetimes.

The next cultural shift will be an automation of the production of goods. To the people who are doing the automating, the technicians, this will feel like a need to make the economy run more efficiently. But as their intuitions become clearer, they will see that what automation is actually doing is freeing up everyone's time, so that we can pursue other ndeavors.

The rest of us, meanwhile, will be following our own intuitions within our chosen occupations and wishing we had even more of this free time. We will realize that the truth we have to tell and the things we have to do are too unique to fit within a usual job setting. So we will find ways to cut our employment hours to pursue our own truth.

Two or three people will hold what used to be one full-time job. This trend will make it easier for those displaced by the automation to find at least part-time jobs.

But what about money? I can't believe people will voluntarily reduce their incomes. We won't have to; our incomes will remain stable because of the people who are giving us money for the insights we provide.

I almost laughed. What?

That as we discover more about the energy dynamics of the universe, we will see what really happens when we give someone something. Right now the only spiritual idea about giving is the narrow concept of religious tithing. As you know, the scriptural notion of tithing is interpreted most commonly as an injunction to give ten percent of one's income to a church. The idea behind this is that whatever we give will be returned many times.

That giving is really a universal principle of support, not just for churches, but for everyone. When we give, we receive in return because of the way energy interacts in the universe.

Remember, when we project energy into someone this creates a void in ourselves which, if we are connected, fills up again. Money works exactly the same way. We will always have more coming in than we could possibly give away. And our gifts, should go to the persons who have given us spiritual truth. When people come into our lives at just the right time to give us the answers we need, we should give them money. This is how we will begin to supplement our incomes and ease out of the occupations

which limit us.

As more people engage in this spiritual economy we will begin a real shift

into the culture of the next millennium. We will have moved through the stage of evolving into our right occupation and will be entering the stage of getting paid for evolving freely and offering our unique truth to others. If everyone were participating then we would be giving and receiving constantly and this interaction with others, this exchange of information, would become everyone's new work, our new economic orientation. We'd be paid by the people we touched.

This situation would then allow the material supports of life to become fully automated, because we would be too busy to own those systems, or to operate them. We would want material production automated and run like a utility. We'd own stock in it, perhaps, but the situation would free us up to expand what is already the information age.

But the important thing for us right now is that we can now understand where we are going. We could not save the environment and democratize the planet and feed the poor before because for so long we could not release our fear of scarcity and our need to control, so that we could give to others. We couldn't release it because we had no view of life that served as an alternative. Now we do!

But wouldn't we need a cheap source of energy? Fusion, superconductivity, artificial intelligence; the technology to automate is probably not that far away, now that we have the knowledge of why to do it. That's right, the most important thing is that we see the truth of this way of life. We're here on this planet not to build personal empires of control, but to evolve.

Paying others for their insights will begin the transformation and then as more and more parts of the economy are automated, currency will disappear altogether. We won't need it. If we are correctly following OUR intuitive guidance then we will take only what we need.

“Hey, Bro!” The jocular voice bursts through the rumbling vehicle’s window while a fistful of knuckles raps a syncopated tattoo on the roof. “Going to town? Any…”
“Got room?” Maryanne asks on the cusp of the Professor’s next question. “Aye,” the shaman replies, glancing over his shoulder to check that the rear seat isn’t too cluttered. “Pardon the mess.”
“You should see our tent,” the younger man says as he opens the rear door and pushes sheafs of broadsheet newspaper across the cracked upholstery. His girlfriend bounces in beside him and the shaman shifts into first gear when the door slams shut. They slowly circle a fungal encampment of varicoloured domed tents and turn onto the rutted wheel tracks that score the recently shorn grass and weeds of the paddock. Maryanne leans forward and her coffee-flavoured breath pours across Ram’s face. “You don’t really believe little green men are coming to Earth and kidnapping people, do you?”
“Not little green men; and not aliens, but travellers who are aspects of our selves. And most of them don’t kidnap anyone.” He nods when he passes Paul, who distractedly smiles back as he kneels beside a small mobile chicken coop and distributes handfuls of grain to jittery hens. The chooks flap about in their wire pen, disconcerted by the atonal symphony of noisesome humankind that’s so rudely and recently filled their domain.
“What would they want with human beings, anyway? Do they put us in zoos or cut us up for medical experiments or spare parts, or what?”
The shaman glances into the mirror and catches Maryanne’s frown-crowned eyes. “The entire planet is a zoo to some of them. It’s hard to remember that infinity is a very big place; many more than one type of being interacts with us all the time, and have done for ever.”
“So, what then? We’re just animals to them?”
“Or some kind of breeding experiment?” the Professor suggests. The shaman glances at his face in the rear vision mirror while Maryanne waves to Paul and the chooks. “Or both, maybe?”
“ ‘Just’ animals?” the shaman asks in reply. “It’s hardly surprising we worry about becoming medical experiments in the hands of others. The way we treat animals is the reason for all our fears about what may happen if we’re helpless in the hands of another species.”
“Lab animals have a piss-poor life, I guess,” the other man observes.
“The hens seem happy,” Maryanne says as she snuggles toward him. The professor’s arm winds round her shoulder as the shaman continues; “Almost every creature that falls into human hands ends up having a terrible life – and then they’re cooked and eaten.” They enter the exit tunnel formed by an arcade of overarching acacias and wave to a clot of barefoot young ferals on their way to the swimming hole. “Could human fears of ‘alien abduction’ have anything to do with guilt and karma? What do you suppose those chickens think about all this?”
“But that’s just it – animals don’t think!” the Professor yells as the vehicle revs on the sparsely gravelled dirt track. The shaman yells back over the rumble; “All that old garbage spewed by Descartes has been proven wrong. Modern brain studies have shown that animals think and dream and plan. And not just higher-order animals, either.” He weaves around a bikini-clad bevy of pedestrians and drives through the long, broad arch of foliage toward the recently tarred road. “But the truth of the matter goes much further. Everything’s conscious and aware – everything has a personality, emotions and aspirations. And we always like to believe we’re better than all other lifeforms; it’s written into most religions.”
“Too right,” agrees Maryanne. “I’d like to go vegetarian.”
“Why don’t you, then?” goads her boyfriend.
“Because I live with you!” she says, bouncing back into his arms. “So you reckon they treat us the way we treat animals?” she calls over the din as the Jackaroo Deva’s wheels spin in a clay filled ditch on the edge of the bitumen.
“All those stories you’ve heard about ‘aliens’ harvesting body parts and conducting medical experiments on humans is no different to the things we do every day,” the driver avers.
“So you reckon it’s just projection – we imagine that’s what we’d do in their place?” the Professor asks. “Partly,” his chauffer replies as they wend their way uphill between a plunging lantana strewn slope and a vast macadamia orchard. “But very few other races actually abduct humans. And it really has much to do with our karma – and dharma – as well. The multiverse is a very big place where everything tends to happen.”
“So that’s why you reckon they come here, stealing babies from mothers’ wombs? If these ‘space travellers’ are so much more advanced that us, what would they need with anything we have here?”
“The biosphere is a Mother’s womb! But for a start, most aren’t space travellers in the strictest sense, but space-time travellers…”
“Like Doctor Who, eh?” she laughs.
“ ‘Exterminate’…” her boyfriend cries in a warbling tremolo as his hand slaps his mouth in a cartoon Amerindian war whoop.
The shaman waits until the younger man’s breath is expended. “Some come from various versions of our own futures, returning to the source of the grime.” He shifts up to second and admires the lichen-coated boles of a rare native tree on the side of the narrow road. “Why?” Maryanne asks. “To make home movies, or what? We know so little about them or ourselves, I suppose… but it’s hard to see why they’d want to have anything to do with us. And if that’s true, what if they killed their own grandparents?”
“The grandfather paradox is a furphy,” he tells her, careful to keep the revs high on the steep slope. “We live in a multiverse, not a universe, so when time travellers come here they enter a parallel universe very like their own, instead of the one they come from – so there’s no paradox if they kill someone who seems to be their own grandparent, for instance; nothing changes back at their home.
He pauses while they digest this convoluted morsel. “And some live in space all or much of the time. Our level of awareness is brutish compared to many who spend a lot of time outside gravity wells.”
“That too,” Maryanne agrees. “We’re savages. But we know so little – about our bodies, even – that it’s hard to see what they might need us for. You think they need our wombs?”
He watches her features fray with concern in the widescreen mirror as she persists along her wonted track. “It’s not that unborn babies are usually being kidnapped,” he tells her. “Most are implanted in the first place before they’re removed…”
“Implanted? Don’t alien…uh, ‘travellers’ have wombs of their own?”
“With a view?” the Professor laughs as they trundle uphill past an overgrown macadamia orchard.
“Actually, many don’t. They breed artificially. Some represent versions of ourselves who pursued a technological route of reproduction for millennia, and now their fertility is failing…”
“Did away with women at last, huh?” the Professor suggests.
“Men, more likely,” sneers his girlfriend.
“Both, actually.”
“So what, they need our fertile genes to backbreed with or something?” the Professor chortles.
“A little of that. Some also abandoned emotions along the way, and eventually realised they need those as well.”
“Fascinating bullshit,” Maryanne’s boyfriend announces, buckling his seatbelt when the main road comes into sight. “Why would they need to come here to do that? Seems pretty inefficient.”
“Well… you know how the cells that will become testicles or ova start out as the same cells, before the chromosomes of the foetus tell them which form to take?”
“Are you changing the subject?”
“No – I just wonder if you know where those germ cells come from in the first place.”
“From the mother and father, of course; they’re there in the genes to start with.”
“No they aren’t – not directly. That’s an interesting detail very few people are taught about human reproduction. The germ cells which ultimately become testes or ova don’t come from the foetus at all.”
“Where do they come from, then? Space travellers invading our wombs?” the Professor asks as he snuggles up to his girlfriend.
“Not quite…”
“Bullshit!” he yells from the back while Maryanne sinks into his larger frame. “The ‘y’ chromosome determines sex, that’s all. The cells are there from the beginning.”
“It’s an unsurprisingly little-known fact that they simply aren’t. The germ cells come from the egg sack – from the mother’s placenta.”
“What? No way, man!”
“Yes way, dude,” he retorts, hoping the other man doesn’t realise the word also means ‘camel’s penis’. He stops at the t-intersection while a stream of traffic pours down the road. “The cells detach from the placenta and enter the womb. Only once the germ cells lodge in the foetus do they begin to differentiate according to the presence or absence of the ‘y’ chromosome. The reproductive cells originate inside the mother.”
“But that would mean that all the genetic potential in daughters or sons comes exclusively from the mother!”
“Not exactly – the foetus is a melding of father and mother, but the organs that make the reproductive cells aren’t; they’re cells from the womb which are reprogrammed to fit the foetus’ development.”
“But all the reproductive cells actually come from the mother?”
“Before their reprogrammed by the new genetic mix, aye – and her mother, and hers, and hers down through time – just like mitochondrial DNA.”
“If that’s true, it’s pretty amazing.”
“It’s true all right. Do a little research and…”
“But I don’t believe it.”
“Fine,” the shaman replies, turning to face his passengers while they wait at the juncture of the main road to town. “But to get back to the original issue – if you’ll pardon the pun – any child brought up exclusively in a test tube wouldn’t have any functioning sexual organs at all; not unless they spent time during a critical juncture of development inside a mother’s womb.”
“They’d have no sex at all? Just neuters?” asks Maryanne while she fumbles with her knotted seatbelt.
“More like workers in an insect hive, they’d all appear female, more or less – but with no functional sex organs.”
“That’s horrible,” she said with a grimace.
“Maybe from the perspective of humans at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Travellers can come from infinitude futures, but many have cut themselves off from natural reproduction and everything that comes along with it, to their detriment. That’s why they need us. They realise they’ve lost something essential and they’ve reached an evolutionary dead end, regardless of the level of their genetic technology”
“I’m glad we’re more than just a gene pool or organ bank, then.” she says. He hesitates to tell her that human blood is very useful, or that certain travellers prize human body parts for less benign reasons than those he’s currently outlining. “So, what, they stick their babies in a mother’s womb and then take them out and bring them to full term in a tank or something?”
“Or into one of their own females, one they’ve been back-bred for the purpose; that’s essential for emotional imprinting. Sometimes they insert artificial wombs into human females who may or may not be carrying a naturally conceived child of their own at the same time. They sometimes insert hybridised human/traveller embryos into the wombs of human females for a time for a number of reasons – including adapting to this planet and acquiring emotions.”
The Professor laughs. “Poor bastards. They don’t know what they’re in for!”

In these accelerated evolutionary times that we live in, we find ourselves adrift in the flow of unprecedented change. Birthing a new age of cosmic consciousness and a deep knowing of oneness of all creation. A Neo Human is emergent within each one of us, an evolved psychedelic thinker tuned into the Gaian Mind: the Noosphere consciously co-creating a new earth through loving intent.

Psychedelic Thinking and Entheospace

Before I explain what I mean by psychedelic thinking, I should make it clear that I do not consider everyone who ingests a psychedelic substance to be a psychedelic thinker. Just like reading the Bible doesn’t make you a Christian, taking a psychedelic substance does not automatically turn you into a psychedelic thinker. To develop the powers of psychedelic thinking you must first do some work in the mind space I call “entheospace”. I define entheospace as that sense of place you have at those special moments when, during an exploration of your inner landscape, you discover an entire universe. If you are technically inclined, you can think of entheospace as an operating environment in which many forms of consciousness exist and interact.


What I am not going to discuss today is how you get into entheospace. There are many ways. Some people use chemicals. Others use plants. Some people enter entheospace “on the natch” by means of deep meditation practices, and others are skilled enough to use trance dance or yoga to launch their minds into the alternate state of consciousness where psychedelic thinking can begin. Before long it will be common to enter entheospace using virtual reality devices.
There simply is no right way to enter this realm. What is important, and what I will concentrate on today, is what you do after entering entheospace. It is important, however, that you continue to keep in mind the distinction between a psychedelic thinker and a psychedelic substance user. It requires discipline, intelligence, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to honesty for a psychedelic substance user to become a psychedelic thinker.

Lorenzo's view of Psychedelic Thinking

I recently heard the Governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, define insanity as doing the same thing over and over while continuing to expect different results each time [a quote also attributed to Einstein – Ed]. According to that definition, it seems fair to say that our entire species is borderline insane. 

The cause of such self-destructive behavior can often be traced to our inability to see the larger picture. 

Our species sometimes acts as if it exists in the two-dimensional world of Flatland. As you recall the story, everyone in Flatland is a two-dimensional being. When they were visited by a three-dimensional sphere, what the Flatlanders saw was a circle that had the ability to change its diameter as it moved up and down within the constraints of Flatland’s two dimensions. It wasn’t until the Flatlanders were lifted to the higher third dimension that they could fully comprehend the reality in which they lived.

By altering our normal state of consciousness and moving to the higher dimension of entheospace we see how interconnected we are. It is this higher state of consciousness that brings us to the clear realization that our personal concerns are intimately entwined with the fate of the planet and of our species. It is in this dimension, where psychedelic thinking is considered baseline, that we will eventually uncover the truth about our existence and our reason for being. It is also from this higher dimension that we can begin the process of integrating psychedelic thinking into our daily lives. 

Psychedelic thinking is what brought all of us together this weekend. As the subtitle of the conference makes clear, we have come here to investigate further perspectives on altered states of consciousness. In essence, we have come together this weekend because we are explorers of consciousness, making our way through seas of insanity, searching for new ways of being.

The writer, Henry James, once said, “The most profound discovery of my generation is that, by changing one's thinking, one can change one's life.” Those words lie at the core of psychedelic thinking, for a psychedelic thinker is intimately aware of the unlimited power of the human mind. As psychedelic thinkers we are not only more fully conscious than others, we also are people of action. We are the people who travel deep into entheospace and return with a renewed commitment to live more sustainably and peacefully on this planet.

A psychedelic thinker is not only a skilled navigator of the deeper realms of consciousness, but also someone who has decided to actively participate in the evolution of consciousness itself. The work of a psychedelic thinker begins by asking the hard questions that seem to be unanswerable while in unaltered states. More importantly, psychedelic thinkers never assume that their current answers are final. People who believe they have uncovered the one and only answer to the eternal mystery of life form religions. Psychedelic thinkers have developed the ability to move beyond such earthly absolutes.

Every child born into this world arrives as a full fledged psychedelic thinker. A rare few, like the current Dalai Lama, never lose this perspective. For most of us, however, the universal consciousness with which we began life on Earth is gradually narrowed and boxed in until our view of existence conforms to that of our parents, teachers, friends, and family. By the time we have completed the first few years of schooling we are no longer creatures of the cosmos. 

We have become creatures of our culture, and psychedelic thinking has faded into the dim recesses of our minds. It is extremely difficult to break out of the mental prisons that are imposed upon us, largely as a result of the family into which we chose to incarnate. The reason we see so few adult psychedelic thinkers today is that the first step in restoring our cosmic identity is to ask a very difficult question. That question is, “Why do you believe what you believe?” Until you are able to understand why you believe a certain proposition, you are working in the dark.

Have you ever noticed how young children begin most of their sentences with the word “why?” “Why is the sky blue? Why are we going to church? Why do I have to go to school?” “Why, why, why” we hear until even the best parents one day lose their patience and say, “Because I said so, that’s why.” At that moment, the child’s cosmic world of psychedelic thinking begins to grow smaller. Culture has reared its ugly head, and another young human mind has learned that the best way to get along is to go along with the herd.

Thus begins the process of applying mental filters on our thinking until it becomes second nature to believe that all of the answers lie outside of ourselves, and these answers, of course, are all carefully guarded by the keepers of our culture. Trust in personal experience eventually gives way to trust in the culture. Had only one human culture evolved on Earth, this survival strategy might have worked, but such is not the case.

Today we find ourselves awash in conflicting cultures. There are religious fundamentalist cultures that believe they are serving a higher purpose by destroying two-thousand-year-old works of art, which were created by believers in a competing religion. There are survivalist cultures that hoard supplies in preparation for Armageddon. We have spiritual cultures that attempt to rise above the trials and tribulations of earthly existence. And we have multinational corporate cultures that seek to control our minds by forcing us to submit to drug testing as a condition of employment. All of these cultures share a common element. They place someone else’s belief above your own personal experience.

This brings us face to face with one of the most fundamental aspects of psychedelic thinking. Psychedelic thinkers place their own experience above someone else’s beliefs. I once heard someone say, “Claim no knowledge for what you have not experienced.” What a different world this would be if we all followed that admonition. Most of us, myself included, are happy to give others our opinions on a wide range of issues about which we have little personal experience. No wonder our public debates over environmental issues are so chaotic. For example, those who hold the reins of power in Washington today believe that CO2 is not a pollutant. From my perspective, this seems akin to the Reagan administration’s classifying catsup as a vegetable.

Like any state-supported fable, they both contain elements of reality. How then are you to gain the personal experience necessary to form an opinion about these issues without first signing on to the beliefs of one group of scientists over another? For those of you who are familiar with the realm of entheospace, the answer to that question is very simple. To gain the personal experience necessary to come to an understanding of sound ecological practices you only need to enter entheospace with an open mind.

Although seldom commented on in detail, it is becoming obvious that psychedelic substances often transform their users into more ecologically aware people. If you share my view that by entering entheospace you also gain the ability to enter into full Gaian awareness, this greening of psychedelic users is understandable. Of course, I am also aware that it is impossible to convince an oil company scientist to change his or her opinion about global warming with information someone discovered in entheospace. It just isn’t that simple.

My guess is that the majority of people in this audience know what it means to be in entheospace. If so, you will also understand what Tony Rich meant last year at the ayahuasca conference when he said, “We do know what we know.” Make no mistake about it, what we call altered states of consciousness are every bit as real and substantial as the consensus reality we are now experiencing in this auditorium. While in deep entheospace, there is seldom any doubt about what we know to be true, and this knowledge comes from the deepest levels of our being. The problem psychedelic thinkers face when returning from an altered state is how to translate this unspeakable knowledge into words and actions that will be understood by others.

Most of us have been in these interesting conversations where someone will say, “I can’t put words to it, but I can assure you that for an instant I truly understood it all.” And whenever someone in the tribe says that, we know exactly what they are talking about. This is where I see the first light of psychedelic thinking. It begins during that wonderful time in deep entheospace when you absolutely know the truth. From that first little spark can come a great flame. Whether or not you choose to nourish that flame is a decision that can determine your destiny. In times like these, however, your personal destiny may be more closely related to our species-destiny than at any other moment in human history. In addition to everything else that is going on right now, our culture has also begun an evolutionary transformation.
