Nikola Tesla was born at midnight on July 9, 1856, in the village of Smiljan, in the province of Lika, Croatia—then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest. His mother descended from eight generations of Serbian Orthodox priests. Tesla was the genius who ushered in the age of alternating-current electrical power.
Tesla had a vivid imagination and an intuitive way of developing scientific hypotheses. After seeing a demonstration of the "Gramme dynamo" (a machine that when operated in one direction is a generator, and when reversed is an electric motor), Tesla visualized a rotating magnetic field and developed plans for an induction motor applying the concept. This electric motor was the first step toward the successful application of alternating-current. Tesla used his imagination to prove and apply his hypotheses. Here is how he explained his creative process:
“Before I put a sketch on paper, the whole idea is worked out mentally. In my mind I change the construction, make improvements, and even operate the device. Without ever having drawn a sketch I can give the measurements of all parts to workmen, and when completed all these parts will fit, just as certainly as though I had made the actual drawings. It is immaterial to me whether I run my machine in my mind or test it in my shop. The inventions I have conceived in this way have always worked. In thirty years there has not been a single exception. My first electric motor, the vacuum wireless light, my turbine engine and many other devices have all been developed in exactly this way.”
Tesla completed his elementary education in Croatia. He continued his schooling in the Polytechnic School in Graz and finished at University of Prague. He worked as an electrical engineer in Germany, Hungary and France before emigrating to the United States in 1884.
Arriving in New York City with four cents in his pocket, Tesla found employment with Thomas Edison in New Jersey. Differences in style between the two men soon led to their separation. In 1885, George Westinghouse, founder of the Westinghouse Electric Company, bought patent rights to Tesla's system of alternating-current. The advantages of alternating-current over Edison's system of direct-current became apparent when Westinghouse successfully used Tesla's system to light the World Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893.
Tesla established a laboratory in New York City in 1887. His experiments ranged from an exploration of electrical resonance to studies of various lighting systems. To counter fears of alternating-current, Tesla gave exhibitions in his laboratory in which he lighted lamps without wires by allowing electricity to flow through his body.
When Tesla became a United States citizen in 1891, he was at the peak of his creative powers. He developed in rapid succession the induction motor, new types of generators and transformers, a system of alternating-current power transmission, fluorescent lights, and a new type of steam turbine. He also became intrigued with wireless transmission of power.
In 1900, Tesla began construction on Long Island of a wireless broadcasting tower. The project was funded with $150,000 capital from financier J. Pierpont Morgan. The project was abandoned when Morgan withdrew his financial support. Tesla's work shifted to turbines and other projects, but his ideas remained on the drawing board due to a lack of funds. Tesla's notebooks are still examined by engineers in search of unexploited ideas.
Tesla allowed himself few close friends, although one was humorist and author, Mark Twain. However, when he died in New York City on January 7, 1943, hundreds of admirers attended his funeral services, mourning the loss of a great genius. At the time of his death Tesla held over 700 patents.

Can a Pill Keep Your DNA Young?

Can a Pill Keep Your DNA Young?
The first drug targeting telomeres, now sold as a nutritional supplement, will soon face the harsh light of peer review.
by Susan Karlin
http://www.spectracell.com/media/telomeres.jpg
The tips of chromosomes could hold
the key to youth.

Telomeres — repeating DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes that become shorter with each cell division — have long tantalized biologists seeking to understand and control the aging process. When its telomeres become too short, a cell stops dividing and eventually dies. Stop that process and (just maybe) immortality beckons; hence the frenzy a decade ago when a group of researchers claimed they had figured out how to slow that winding-down.
Now a second round of frenzy is under way. After years of research, the first telomere-targeting pills have hit the market, while other treatments are entering clinical trials.
An enzyme called telomerase maintains telomeres in our reproductive and stem cells but not in the rest of the body. In 2001 researchers at the biotech giant Geron Corporation isolated a molecule called TA-65 from the herb astragalus, which they said boosted telomerase activity (its effect has not yet been evaluated in published, peer-reviewed studies).
Geron licensed the product to T.A. Sciences in New York City for development as a nutritional supplement; unlike medications, supplements require no FDA approval. A handful of physicians began selling TA-65 pills in 2007, and the company says that clients taking it have reported enhanced athletic, visual, and cognitive performance. To back up those claims, T.A. Sciences plans to submit research demonstrating TA-65’s effects on bone density, immune function, and age-related biomarkers for peer-reviewed publication this year.
The results should help early adopters decide whether the supplement is worth its $8,000-per-year price tag. Sierra Sciences of Reno, Nevada, is also developing possible pharmaceuticals to maintain telomeres. “We now have 35 chemicals sitting in our lab that turn on the telomerase gene,” says CEO Bill Andrews. The company hopes to have an approved drug within 15 years.
Geron, meanwhile, is pursuing a separate telomere therapy aimed at fighting cancer. Although telomerase is not present in most cells, it gets reactivated in cancer cells, allowing them to continue dividing. Blocking the enzyme causes the cancerous cells to die, so the company is working with a telomerase inhibitor, imetelstat, that it hopes will kill tumor cells while leaving healthy ones unharmed. The compound is currently in Phase I clinical trials, with Phase II testing slated to begin this year. The unsettling flip side is that telomerase-boosting treatments aimed at slowing aging might also increase the risk of cancer.
Some studies in mice have shown that elevated telomerase activity leaves the animals more susceptible to skin tumors and breast cancer, so maybe there is no free lunch.

Atlantis & the Antediluvian World

Atlantis & the Antediluvian World
We Live On the Uplands of Flooded Continents

We live on the uplands of the flooded continents of the last ice age. With the end of the last glaciation sea levels rose between 100-200 metres . Then as now the bulk of the global population dwelt close to the sea - on today's submerged continental shelves.

The increase in sea levels also led to a great deal of subsidence, but this occurred after the sinking of many regions. A key fact to consider is that the world tilted 20 degrees during the event, which precipitated the end of the last glaciation; see the ice distribution during the last glaciation and you will note the old ice caps are not centred on today's poles.

The Earth is not round, but oblate; the equator bulges 27 miles more in diameter than the polar diameter of the planet. Hence, anything close to the equator which was moved to, say, 20 degrees latitude would subside around an average of 10,000 feet (3 kilometres) - bearing in mind the other catastrophic damage to the crust attendant to such a disaster (the word 'disaster' means 'evil star', by the way).

Anything moved from 20 degrees to the equator would rise appreciably in relation to the datum (sea level) - hence the highlands that bear the salt water Lake Titicaca (which has been slowly evaporating for the last 13,600 years) and the massive irrigation works on the precipitate Andean plateau - where no rainwater falls - that must have supported a population of millions. Also witness the seaport ruins at almost 10,000 feet downstream from Titicaca, the plethora of overthrown monumental stones in the area and the tilting of the entire lake bed.

The tilting of the globe sank the continent of Atlantis overnight. Its mountains are present-day Cuba. A short Internet search will show that a team found the eight-kilometre square submerged city in question in 2002, off the Western tip of the island.

Atlantis In Cuban Depths or Anomaly?

Images of Massive Stones 2,000 Feet Below Surface Fuel Scientific Speculation
http://photos2.hi5.com/0078/217/297/eS3nWN217297-02.jpg

HAVANA -- The images appear slowly on the video screen, like ghosts from the ocean floor. The videotape, made by an unmanned submarine, shows massive stones in oddly symmetrical square and pyramid shapes in the deep-sea darkness.

Sonar images taken from a research ship 2,000 feet above are even more puzzling. They show that the smooth, white stones are laid out in a geometric pattern. The images look like fragments of a city, in a place where nothing man-made should exist, spanning nearly eight square miles of a deep-ocean plain off Cuba's western tip.

"What we have here is a mystery," said Paul Weinzweig, of Advanced Digital Communications (ADC), a Canadian company that is mapping the ocean bottom of Cuba's territorial waters under contract with the government of President Fidel Castro.

"Nature couldn't have built anything so symmetrical," Weinzweig said, running his finger over sonar printouts aboard his ship, tied up at a wharf in Havana harbor. "This isn't natural, but we don't know what it is."

The company's main mission is to hunt for shipwrecks filled with gold and jewels, and to locate potentially lucrative oil and natural gas reserves in deep water that Cuba does not have the means to explore.

Treasure hunting has become a growth industry in recent years as technology has improved, allowing more precise exploration and easier recovery from deeper ocean sites. Advanced Digital operates from the Ulises, a 260-foot trawler that was converted to a research vessel for Castro's government by the late French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.

Since they began exploration three years ago with sophisticated side-scan sonar and computerized global-positioning equipment, Weinzweig said they have mapped several large oil and gas deposits and about 20 shipwrecks sitting beneath ancient shipping lanes where hundreds of old wrecks are believed to be resting. The most historically important so far has been the USS Maine, which exploded and sank in Havana harbor in 1898, an event that ignited the Spanish-American War.

In 1912, the ship was raised from the harbor floor by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and towed out into deeper water four miles from the Cuban shore, where it was scuttled. Strong currents carried the Maine away from the site, and its precise location remained unknown until Ulises's sonar spotted it two years ago.

Then, by sheer serendipity, on a summer day in 2000, as the Ulises was towing its sonar back and forth across the ocean like someone mowing a lawn, the unexpected rock formations appeared on the sonar readouts. That startled Weinzweig and his partner and wife, Paulina Zelitsky, a Russian-born engineer who has designed submarine bases for the Soviet military.

"We have looked at enormous amounts of ocean bottom, and we have never seen anything like this," Weinzweig said.

The discovery immediately sparked speculation about Atlantis, the fabled lost city first described by Plato in 360 B.C.. Weinzweig and Zelitsky were careful not to use the A word and said that much more study was needed before such a conclusion could be reached.

But that has not stopped a boomlet of speculation, most of it on the Internet. Atlantis-hunters have long argued their competing theories that the lost city was off Cuba, off the Greek island of Crete, off Gibraltar or elsewhere. Several Web sites have touted the ADC images as a possible first sighting.

Among those who suspect the site may be Atlantis is George Erikson, a California anthropologist who co-authored a book in which he predicted that the lost city would be found offshore in the tropical Americas.

"I have always disagreed with all the archaeologists who dismiss myth," said Erikson, who said he had been shunned by many scientists since publishing his book about Atlantis. He said the story has too many historical roots to be dismissed as sheer fantasy and that if the Cuban site proves to be Atlantis, he hopes "to be the first to say, 'I told you so.' "

Manuel Iturralde, one of Cuba's leading geologists, said it was too soon to know what the images prove. He has examined the evidence and concluded that, "It's strange, it's weird; we've never seen something like this before, and we don't have an explanation for it."

Iturralde said volcanic rocks recovered at the site strongly suggest that the undersea plain was once above water, despite its extreme depth. He said the existence of those rocks was difficult to explain, especially because there are no volcanoes in Cuba.

He also said that if the symmetrical stones are determined to be the ruins of buildings, it could have taken 50,000 years or more for tectonic shifting to carry them so deep into the ocean. The ancient Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is only about 5,000 years old, which means the Cuba site "wouldn't fit with what we know about human architectural evolution," he said.

"It's an amazing question that we would like to solve," he said.

But Iturralde stressed that the evidence is inconclusive. He said that no first-hand exploration in a mini-submarine had been conducted, which would provide a much more comprehensive assessment. He said a remote-operated video camera provides only a limited perspective, like someone looking at a close-up image of an elephant's toe and trying to describe the whole animal.

The National Geographic Society has expressed interest and is considering an expedition in manned submarines next summer, according to Sylvia Earl, a famed American oceanographer and explorer-in-residence at the society.

"It's intriguing," Earl said in an interview from her Oakland, Calif., home. "It is so compelling that I think we need to go check it out."

Earl said a planned expedition this past summer was canceled because of funding problems. But she said National Geographic hopes to explore the site next summer as part of its Sustainable Seas research program.

Earl has visited Cuba and described the preliminary evidence as "fantastic" and "extraordinary." But she stressed that as a "skeptical scientist," she would assume that the unusual stones were formed naturally until scientific evidence proved otherwise.

"There is so much speculation about ancient civilizations," she said. "I'm in tune with the reality and the science, not the myths or stories or fantasies."

As they search for answers, Weinzweig and Zelitsky have suddenly become involved in a new mystery -- the discovery of a potential blockbuster shipwreck. They said that on Aug. 15, their remotely operated vehicle came across what appears to be a 500-year-old Spanish galleon that they had been searching for.

They declined to name the ship, fearful of other treasure hunters, but they said it carried a priceless cargo of emeralds, diamonds and ancient artifacts. By contract, they said they can keep 40 percent of the value of whatever they recover. They said the value of findings at the newly discovered wreck could far exceed the nearly $4 million that their private backers have so far invested in their operations.

Weinzweig said a closer examination is needed to prove the ship's identity. He said that in treasure hunting, as in the search for Atlantis, there is no substitute for science.

"One thing is legend," he said, sitting on Ulises's bridge. "Another is the hard evidence you find on the ocean floor."

Researchers come across mysterious shapes on the sea bottom just west of Cuba. Patterns suggest an ancient civilization.

The shapes appear to be arranged in patterns, the scientists say. The images, made with sophisticated sonar, show an area about 100 by 200 meters.

Paulina Zelitsky remembers the hot July day two summers ago and the sudden, unpleasant feeling that she had stumbled into a place she was not supposed to be.
The research vessel Ulises sailed in the Yucatan Channel just off the west coast of Cuba that day, hired by the Castro government to look for undersea oil and gas -- old treasure ships, too, if they could be found.
More than 2,000 feet beneath the surface, in total blackness, the vessel towed a boombox-sized sonar on an electronic tether. Pulsing sound waves, the sonar sketched a picture of the sea bottom on a computer screen aboard Ulises far above.
As Zelitsky and her husband, Paul Weinzweig, watched the screen, the empty plain of sea bed suddenly gave way to images of massive geometric shapes, apparently cut from stone. As more shapes came into view, some appeared to be arranged in patterns over a large area about 20-kilometers square.
Some stone appeared to be cut into blocks, and some blocks seemed perfectly aligned. They appeared to form corridors and the outlines of rooms, the two scientists said. There were round stones and pyramid-shaped ones, too.
The sea bottom in that area is an undulating sand plain, Zelitsky said. What they were seeing should not have been there.
"We were shocked, and frankly we were a little frightened," said Zelitsky. "It was as though we should not be seeing what we were seeing. Our first thought was maybe we found some kind of secret military installation."
Finding a military installation on the bottom of the sea might unnerve anybody, and for the next six months the two researchers stayed busy with their work for the Cuban government and said little about their discovery. "But I tried to identify what we had seen," Zelitsky said. "Then one day, in our office, I looked up and saw pictures of ancient Mexican ruins on a calendar, and I made a mental connection."
Zelitsky and Weinzweig, officers in a Havana-based Canadian company called Advanced Digital Communication (ADC), believe they might have found the remnants of a lost civilization perhaps 6,000 years old.
This site, perhaps built by a culture that far pre-dates the famous Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula, might have been the victim of a vast, mysterious cataclysm that somehow dropped it 2,000 feet beneath the surface of the sea.
"Nothing is known for certain now," Weinzweig said, "but oral tradition in early Mexico speaks of an advanced civilization of tall white people who came from the East, and of an island that sank in a great natural disaster." In the ancient language of some early Central American Indians, he said, "the word Atlanticu means 'our good father,' or, 'the place where our good father rests.' "
Then again, maybe not.
Maybe the intriguing shapes found by the sonar are just that -- intriguing shapes, carved over the centuries by whimsical Mother Nature.
Zelitsky and Weinzweig don't think so, though, and plan to visit the site again with a manned submersible equipped with cameras and powerful lights -- when they have the money.
Others have interest in such a project, but haven't committed to it.
"They are interesting anomalies, but that's as much as anyone can say right now," said John Echave, senior editor of National Geographic Magazine, who traveled to Cuba to study the sonar images.
"But I'm no expert on sonar," he said, "and until we are able to actually go down there and see, it will difficult to characterize them."
Echave pointed out that hard-to-explain undersea geologic formations have cropped up elsewhere in the world, too, in places such as Japan and nearby in the Bahamas.
In the Bahamas, pilots and divers wondered for years about the so-called "Atlantis Road,' a long row of seemingly connected stone blocks in about 15 feet of water. Gene Shinn of the St. Petersburg office of the U.S. Geological Survey became fascinated by the story and investigated in 1978. His conclusion: The blocks are natural, caused by a combination of sea level rise and erosion.
Nevertheless, Echave said, "we are talking to Advanced Digital and we have an interest in their project. We have to get the protocols in motion, but at this point we have not dotted the i's and crossed the t's." Echave said since any project undertaken would be scientific, he did not expect problems with the Cuban or U.S. governments.
Dr. Robert Ballard is explorer-in-residence for the National Geographic Society and is founder and president of the Institute For Exploration at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn. He is best known, however, for the 1985 discovery of the passenger liner Titanic deep in the North Atlantic.
Ballard said he has heard of the formations in the Yucatan Channel but is not convinced they are the work of humans.
"That's too deep," he said of the 2,000-foot site. "I'd be surprised if it was human. You have to ask yourself, how did it get there?
"I've looked at a lot of sonar images in my life," Ballard said, "and it can be sort of like looking at an an ink blot -- people can sometimes see what they want to see. I'll just wait for a bit more data."
Zelitsky and Weinzweig say that's what they want, too: more data.
In July 2001, the summer after the discovery, they returned to the site with geologist Manuel Iturralde, senior researcher of Cuba's Natural History Museum. They sent down a Remotely Operated Vehicle to examine and videotape the structures. Images sent back by the ROV confirmed the presence of large blocks of stone -- about 8 feet by 10 feet -- some circular, some rectangular, some in the shape of pyramids. Some blocks appeared deliberately stacked atop one another, others appeared isolated from the rest.
"Large structures in the middle of a desert," Zelitsky called them.
Because of their white appearance underwater, Zelitsky said the structures appear to be granite -- a good building stone but one foreign to that part of the world.
"There is no granite in Cuba or the Yucatan," Zelitsky said. "That area features limestone." Granite is found in Central Mexico, however, and was used by ancient people such as the Maya and an older civilization, the Olmec, in their construction of cities and buildings.
The second visit to the underwater site proved only marginally revealing, however. Currents in the area are strong, Weinzweig said, and heavy sediment in the water made videotaping difficult.
"We've done about as much as we can do with the technology we have," Weinzweig said. "The next step will be to go down there with a manned submersible, so we can move from place to place without a tether holding us back."
http://www.andrewcollins.com/pics/cubapy.jpg
The new submersible will need powerful lights and better cameras, he said, and a drill to bore into the stone to confirm they are made of granite.
Large stone pieces used by ancient civilizations in construction are called megaliths. With this in mind, Zelitsky and Weinzweig have dubbed their discovery "Mega."
Predictably, as word got around, others quickly gave it another name: The Lost City of Atlantis.

A land bridge from Mexico to Cuba?

The Lost City of Atlantis has warmed romantic hearts for thousands of years.
The Greek philosopher Plato, who died in 347 B.C., called it a utopia destroyed by an earthquake, and people have been trying to find it since.
They have looked from the Aegean to Antarctica, from Europe to the Bahamas, without success.
In his book Gateway to Atlantis, Andrew Collins speculated the Caribbean might turn out to be the site of Atlantis and proposed that it might have been destroyed by a comet impact that devastated the eastern coastline with mammoth tsunamis or tidal waves.
Zelitsky and Weinzweig dismiss the Atlantis talk.
The story is myth, said Zelitsky, a Russian-trained engineer. "What we have found is more likely remnants of a local culture," once located on a 100-mile "land bridge" that joined Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula with Cuba.
This local culture, however, might be every bit as remarkable as Atlantis.
The Maya, for example, developed a magnificent civilization on the Yucatan Peninsula beginning about A.D. 250 and peaking about A.D. 900. Spain finally completed its conquest of the Maya about 1500.
The Maya produced advanced architecture, painting, pottery and sculpture, and their grasp of mathematics and astronomy was remarkable for its time. They might have developed the first calendar, and were among the first to make paper and books of tree bark. They cut large stone blocks and made buildings, courtyards and pyramids, many for worship of numerous gods.
But Zelitsky thinks the Mega site pre-dates even the ancient Maya -- by a lot.
Recently excavated sculptures by the Olmec and Totonec peoples, also of the Yucatan and Central America, are about 4,500 to 6,000 years old, she said.
"The Mayan nation came to the Yucatan at much later times and learned the arts and sciences of civilization from earlier nations." We know little of these nations, she said, "thanks to the Spanish church, who burned all archives."
Today Mexico and Cuba are separated only by the 100-mile width of the Yucatan Channel, and geologists have speculated for years that a "land bridge" once joined the two. According to this theory, underwater faults eventually parted and destroyed the bridge, swallowing the land above.
But 2,000 feet? If the megaliths are indeed ruins, how did they get so deep?
Zelitsky answers that large-scale underground movement of Earth's tectonic plates is usually accompanied by volcanos and earthquakes.
"It's a very powerful event,' she said, and the sinking of an island "could have happened very quickly." While some megaliths on the sea bottom appear organized, she said, others do not. "Over about 20 square kilometers there are a large number of structures that appear jumbled, disorganized," she said.
Cuban geologist Iturralde, she said, "has clearly identified on the ocean bottom the coastal structures of a separated island." Also, she said, the sea bottom at the site is covered with volcanic glass "which could be generated only on the oxygenated surface."
http://x68.xanga.com/8978431256448256601074/b204134260.gif
Everyone should keep an open mind, said geologist Iturralde.
"These are extremely peculiar structures, and they have captured our imagination," he said. "If I had to explain this geologically, I would have a hard time."
But, he added, just because no natural explanation for the so-called ruins is immediately apparent, it doesn't mean there isn't one. "Nature is able to create some really unimaginable structures," he said.
He also raised a third possibility. The megaliths might be natural structures, he said, "but transformed or adapted by intelligent beings for dwelling or religious purposes."

What next? For now, nothing

ADC operates from the Ulises, a 260-foot trawler that was converted to a research vessel for the Cuban government by the late French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.
The company made headlines a year ago with its discovery in nearby waters of the U.S. Navy battleship Maine, which was sunk under mysterious circumstances in 1898, touching off the Spanish-American War. (The ship had been sunk in Havana Harbor. In 1911 it was taken offshore and sunk again, honorably, with a U.S. flag flying from its bow. Its exact location was unknown until it was found by Weinzweig and Zelitsky.)
In finding the Maine and the Mega site, Advanced Digital has made use of two major improvements in underwater exploration. One is side-scan sonar, which allows a wider sweep of ocean bottom than earlier sonar equipment, and the other is the satellite-based Global Positioning System, or GPS.
GPS allows a surface vessel to fix its position to within a few feet and then to follow a precise, reliable search trackline. Connected by cable to the vessel, side-scanning sonar sweeps the ocean floor with pulses of sound, providing a strikingly clear picture of objects on the bottom.
When a promising object is detected, an ROV can be dispatched to investigate. Searches can be performed in 20,000 feet of water.
For now, though, Weinzweig and Zelitsky say they have their hands full keeping up with the terms of the contract with the Cuban government.
"We have signed a long-term exclusive contract with the Cuban government for the natural resources of the Cuban Gulf of Mexico," Weinzweig said. "Our money is private and comes from family and friends who have purchased shares in our offshore company. We have spent $4-million over the last three years and we will require an additional $8-million or $9-million.
"This kind of work is very expensive and we require investment financing. However, our ownership in the final product, whether oil or treasure, would more than handsomely reward the investment required for conduct of deep and ultra deep work on the ocean bottom.
"For now we are busy with our other work," Zelitsky said. "As soon as we have done enough to help finance an archaeological expedition (to the Mega site) then maybe we can do that. But right now it's oil and gas."

Geoengineering: Obama Considers Chemtrails

Geoengineering: Obama Considers Chemtrails
 by William Thomas
http://www.neonlite.ca/archives/images/chemtrails.jpg
President Obama is full of surprises. But even expectant reporters were taken aback when White House science adviser John Holdren used his first interview on April 18, 2009 to announce, "Global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air."

With the first feedback effects from methane releases starting to kick in and our space colony's atmospheric CO2 levels surging toward the "Do Not Exceed" redline of 440 parts per million, Holdren declared that the Obama administration is considering "last resort" technologies to chill the global greenhouse village…

Referring to "radical" technologies that include spreading a sunlight-reflecting artificial cloud cover, Holdren declared, "It's got to be looked at. We don't have the luxury of taking any approach off the table."

Invoking the image of a souped-up sedan careening toward an abyss in a fog of mass marketing exhortations for more speed, the White House science adviser suggested that reasonable passengers would stop arguing if there really was a cliff, how close and how big the drop long enough to urge applying some brakes - while chanting "Our lifestyle is sacred!" and keeping the carbon accelerator jammed to the floorboards.

Instead of the deep, urgent reductions in carbon emissions urged by frightened scientists, drowning polar bears, still homeless Katrina survivors, and drought-stricken farmers everywhere, the White House decision to embrace climate geoengineering "represents the ultimate moral bankruptcy of institutions and a failure of democracy," charged Dr. Andrew Glikson.

The Australian Earth and paleoclimate scientist further noted that the U.S. National Academy of Science "is also looking at the subject in its new multidiscipline climate challenges program." [Truthout Apr 18/09]

In fact, the NAS has been considering such schemes for more than half-a-century.

WHAT'S NEW?

In 1965, a report urging President Johnson
to head off atmospheric warming instead of the Viet Cong did not even mention cutting emissions. Urging a silver bullet instead of biting the climate change bullet, the National Academy of Science went on to issue studies in 1977, 1982 and 1990 championing space mirrors and atmospheric sunscreens.
In 1979, physicist Freeman Dyson leveraged his considerable scientific creds to propose deliberate, large-scale introduction of fine particles into the upper atmosphere to offset global warming. [Technology, Entertainment, Design conference New York City Sept/07; Wall Street Journal Oct 17/97]

Since only a fraction of incoming solar radiation reaches the Earth's surface, this chemical sunscreen "would have more impact if done high in the atmosphere," the NAS said. It might even "destroy stratospheric ozone."

Why?
Because spraying megatons of fine particles into the stratosphere clumps chlorine compounds into giant ice clouds. When struck by sunlight, these chemical clouds refract prismatic fragments like rainbows. And become highly corrosive to ozone.

Ken Caldeira was the climate expert who ran the computer simulations at the Lawrence Livermore atom bomb labs. He too warned that the stratospheric spraying of sunlight-reflecting chemicals could "destroy the ozone layer" - as well as posing human health risks.

CHEAP THRILLS

Nevertheless, the NAS enthused, "Perhaps one of the surprises of this analysis is the relatively low costs at which some of the geoengineering options might be implemented."

Each "dust distribution mission" would require a 500-mile flight lasting about an hour and a half at a delivery cost of just $500 per ton of sunlight-reflecting chemicals. [Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming chapter 28]

In 1992, the National Academy of Science's $80 992-page report on "mitigating" greenhouse warming included a "Geoengineering" chapter that discussed "Screening Out Some Sunlight". Computer simulations showed that an increase in albedo of just half a percent would be "sufficient to halve the effect of a CO2 doubling." This would "involve changing the quantity or character of cloud cover."

Such a grandiose fantasy would also greatly increase the scientists' libido.

OWNING THE WEATHER

In 1996, the United States Air Force
released its own feasibility study. Produced by seven high-ranking officers, "Owning The Weather In 2025" described this "high-risk, high-reward endeavor" in terms of "splitting of the atom" - before going on to describe how "Weather Force Specialists" could lay down "aerial obscuration" materials behind tanker aircraft.

SKY SHIELDS

The following year, Dr. Edward Teller
urged an International Seminar on Planetary Emergencies to consider deploying an aerial "sky shield" costing $1 billion a year. The Father of the Atom Bomb said his cheap and easy plan would allow everyone to keep polluting as usual.

Speaking like someone out of Horton's Hooverville, Teller was a senior research fellow at the government policy-making Hoover Institute. Known for "forging strong ties between right-wing ideologues, right-wing think tanks and right-wing policy makers," recent "friends of Hoover" have included Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice, GW Bush and Karl Rove. [rightwingwatch.org]

"Global warming is too serious to be left to the politicians," Teller later told the Wall Street Journal. "Injecting sunlight-scattering particles into the stratosphere appears to be a promising approach. Why not do that?" [Wall Street Journal Oct 17/97; Hoover Digest 1998 No. 1]

In fact, it was already being done.
Issued for peer review on May 15, 2000, Chapter 4 of the IPCC's WGIII TAR SOD report looked at deliberate, large-scale manipulations of Earth processes. Intended to advise policy makers around the globe, the IPCC report pointed to the plausible "potential" of Ken Caldeira's computer models and Teller's sunscreen scenario. Though a few specks of the proposed chemical spray could have severe human health impacts, Teller and his cohorts proposed spreading 10 million tons of these shiny particulates to send about 1% of incoming sunshine back into space."

Hold it, the IPCC cautioned. Two key problems are "the potential impact on atmospheric chemistry," loss of sunlight required for all life, a citizenry upset by "the associated whitening of the visual appearance of the sky."

A few other concerns included: "Unexpected environmental impacts, our lack of complete understanding of the systems involved, and our concerns with the legal and ethical implications."

CHEMTRAILS CONFIRMED

First confirmed by Airport Authority
Terry Stewart at the Victoria International Airport on Dec. 8, 2000 as a "joint Canada-U.S. military operation" - and stridently denied by senior officers at Canadian Forces Base, where Stewart later told the Vancouver Courier he had received his information) - these tanker plane missions were verified in March, 2001 by the Air Traffic Control manager for the northeastern seaboard of the United States.

In three taped interviews with veteran radio journalist S.T. Brendt, our "Deep Sky" source said he had been ordered to divert incoming commercial flights away from USAF tankers spraying a reflective substance showing up on ATC radars as a 'haze'.

This FAA disclosure came on March 12, 2001 as squadrons of radar-identified air force tankers saturated skies over the northeastern United States with characteristic Xs, grids and parallel rows of broad, expanding chemical plumes.

After counting more than 30 big jets spreading persistent plumes within 45 minutes over remote rural Maine, ST Brendt called her assistant WMWV news director. Richard Dean and his staff went outside and counted 370 chemical trails over the next six-and-a-half hours. During this time, local Air Traffic Controllers reported only nine commercial jets on their radars. [lifeboatnews.com Apr 3/01; Chemtrails Confirmed by William Thomas 2007]

9/11

For 15 years Dr. David Travis has been looking
at the effects of contrails left by aircraft on the climate. Around the twelfth of September, 2001, he recalls, "Later on in the day, when I was driving to work, and I noticed how bright blue and clear the sky was. And at first I didn't think about it. Then I realized the sky was unusually clear."

During the three days the U.S. commercial air fleet was grounded, this atmospheric specialist found temperatures warming more than 1 degree C. One degree in just three days - no one had ever seen such a change happen so fast. "From a climate perspective that is huge," Travis says.

Could common contrails cool the atmosphere by a full degree? "Here are some examples of what we call outbreaks of contrails," Dr. Travis later told the BBC. "These are large clusters of contrails. And here's a particularly good one from Southern California. Here's the west coast of the United States. And you can see here this lacing network of contrails covering at least 50%, if not 75% or more of the sky in that area. It doesn't take an expert to realize that if, if you look at the satellite picture and see this kind of contrail coverage that they've got to be having an effect on temperature at the surface." [BBC Apr 19/09]

Ditto chemtrail "obscuration".

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS CONCERNED OVER CHEMTRAILS

One month after the 9/11 attacks,
Deep Sky began phoning Air Traffic Controllers. At Chicago's O'Hare airport, all three major airports in New York, as well as Los Angeles LAX, San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland, San Diego, Washington DC's Dulles and Jacksonville, Florida controllers were being ordered to route airliners beneath formations of air force tanker planes spraying chemicals that clouded their screens.

Several smaller but busy airports at Westchester County in New York state and Manchester in New Hampshire confirmed similar experiences. Every controller, without exception, was being told to divert commercial traffic away from these military aircraft, and bring them in lower to avoid "experiments" that could degrade their radars.

Cleveland airport controllers were surprised by the extent of obscuration on their radars.

CHEMTRAIL SCIENTISTS SPEAK OUT

Ohio is the home of Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base tasked with developing Tesla, HAARP and related weather modification technology. In December 2001, a Lawrence Livermore scientist on loan to Wright-Pat told Columbus Alive reporter Bob Fitrakis that two different projects were being conducted. One involved spraying microscopic aluminum particles parallel lines, X-patterns and grids to create artificial cloud cover and lessen global warming. Barium chemtrails were being used to direct the military's beam weapon in Alaska called HAARP for 3-D imaging, electronic warfare - and steering the jet stream. [Columbus Alive Dec 6/01]

HR2977

Just two months before, Ohio Representative
Dennis Kucinich had ignited a Congressional firestorm by introducing HR2977. His "Space Preservation Act" called for the peaceful uses of space and a ban on "exotic weapons". Section 7 specifically sought to prohibit "chemtrails".

Kucinich later told Columbus Alive that despite official denials, as head of the Armed Services oversight committee he was well acquainted with chemtrail projects. "The truth is there's an entire program in the Department of Defense - 'Vision for 2020' - that's developing these weapons," Kucinich told Fitrakis. The U.S. Space Command mission statement calls for "full-spectrum dominance of space, land, sea and air."

According to Kucinich, Section 7 naming chemtrails, HAARP and other planet-threatening weapons was omitted in a substitute bill under pressure from scientists who did not want their own funding cut. TANKERS OVER EDMONTON

Dave Dickie's company performs contract landscape work for the City of Edmonton. In November 2002 his crews began finding widespread nutrient deficiency in soils that could cause severe problems for plant life, including trees.

Soils analysis came back with showing extreme electrical conductivity readings. A November 18, 2002 lab test of snow falling through chemtrails also confirmed elevated levels of aluminum and barium. Norwest Labs lab report #336566 dated November 14. 2002 found:

* aluminum levels: 0.148 milligrams/litre
* barium levels: 0.006 milligrams/litre

As Dickie confirmed to this reporter, "It is the scientific opinion of the lab that the aluminum content of the sample is high and unusual. Elevated levels of aluminum and barium are not usually found in Alberta precipitation."

Dickie regularly visits Air Traffic Control at the Edmonton municipal airport to watch the chemplanes making repeated passes over the city. Blessed with good friends at work in the tower, he has watched radar-identified KC-135s "on many occasions."

On Father's Day 2002, Dickie and an excited group of 12 year-olds watched two KC-135s tracked by radar as HA (High Altitude) targets flying at 34,000 and 36,000 feet - "one to the south, and one to the north of the city."

Both USAF tankers had flown south out of Alaska. As Dickie, the kids and the controllers watched, the big jets began making patterns over Edmonton - "circuits" the controllers called it. "Petro 011" and "Petro 012" were working alone in "commanded airspace" from which all other aircraft were excluded.

And they were leaving chemtrails.

"The signature is significant," one radar operator commented, referring to a trail clearly visible on the scope extending for miles behind the KC-135. In contrast, a JAL flight on the display left no contrail.

Going outside, Dickie and several controllers scanned clear blue skies. They easily located the KC-135 leaving its characteristic white-plume "signature". Visibility was outstanding. They also clearly identified the JAL airliner at a similar flight level. It left no contrail at all.

"We see these guys up here a lot," the radar techs told Dickie. "You should have seen it when they had the big summit up in Calgary. It was exciting to watch them."

Was the U.S. Air Force spraying barium to enhance radio and radar surveillance over that G-8 gathering - or for some other purpose?

There could be no doubt about what was being left in the tankers' wake. Showing up on radar as "birdie feet" triangles, the reflective plumes also showed up as "as a concentration of dots" in the radar-visible plume. Focusing on each plane with the click of cursor, "we could see different contrails," Dickie described. Some were short and quickly vanished from the 'scopes. Other trails were thick, long and lingering - not contrails at all.

U.S. PUSHES FOR PLANETARY SUNSCREEN

In 2007, as the IPCC's latest report
was being drafted to guide international negotiators in devising a successor to the Kyoto emissions treaty, the Sydney Morning Herald reported U.S. representatives were pressing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to steer "away from conclusions that would support a new worldwide climate treaty based on binding targets to reduce emissions."

Instead, Washington sought to legitimize its clandestine chemtrails program by urging inclusion in the "Summary For Policymakers" prefacing each chapter in the IPCC report - "techniques such as reflective dust pumped into the atmosphere to block sunlight as a last-ditch way to halt global warming."

The IPCC draft report called these ideas "speculative, uncosted and with potential unknown side-effects."

But Professor Stephen Schneider, a 30-year climate consultant to the U.S. government and key IPCC player, insisted the world was "playing Russian roulette" by failing to address climate change. [Sydney Morning Herald Jan 29/07]

But the Obama administration realizes that even drastically cutting emissions will not immediately cut accumulated atmospheric CO2 concentrations - which will take another 30 years to decline.

"Assuming CO2 emissions are reduced by even 40% relative to 2000, it would keep rising by a minimum of 1.2 ppm/year, reaching levels near or above 450 ppm by 2050," Dr. Glikson explains. "And this is without even accounting for the effects of methane, likely reduced CO2 intake by the oceans, and increases in positive feedbacks from the biosphere. At 450 ppm, with lag effects, polar ice sheets undergo advanced melting, with consequent major sea level rise." [Truthout Apr 18/09]

Chemtrails promise a quick fix.

And an even weaker commitment to cutting emissions immediately.

WITH ARMED MILITIAS AND SCIENCE WHORES ON OUR SIDE, WHO NEEDS REALITY?

Even our current feeble attempts at maintaining
hyper-wasteful lifestyles under the fig-leaf of "recycling" and switching to extremely toxic and electromagnetically polluting "curly" fluorescent bulbs are being quashed by the Oil Mafia's disinformation campaign. And threats by such luminaries as Republican Representative Michelle Bachmann, who is exhorting her Minnesota constituents to be "armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax."

As she puts it, "The science is on our side on this one." [Truthout Apr 18/09]

Rigged science funded by corporations heavily invested in carbon emissions may be on the side of Climate Holocaust Deniers. But Ms. Bachmann ought to run her rant by the scientists watching their test rigs disappear into suddenly appearing ice-sheet fissures, oceangoing reporters describing audible methane farts from thawing seafloor gases trapping 20-times more atmospheric heat than carbon dioxide. She could also try selling her "Climate-Change-Is-A-Hoax" hoax to fishers gazing at an empty acidic ocean, and farmers plowing dust in Australia, India and the USA.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE GLACIERS GONE?
(Sung to the Peter, Paul and Mary hit)

In the hullabaloo over collapsing banks,
did anyone happen to catch the collapse of the Wilkins ice shelf? Its already floating mass won't add to sea-level rise. But removing a cork the size of Jamaica from the continental glaciers will allow them to flow even faster into the sea. [Truthout Apr 18/09]

While we are busy with other concerns, Antarctica is busy disintegrating. The Wordle Ice Shelf is gone, the northern Larsen Ice Shelf no longer exists, and "uncorked" inland glaciers already discharging 103 billion tons of water and ice into the ocean every year are now sliding into the sea even faster because the 650 to 980 feet-thick floating ice-shelf that normally blocks them is… gone.

Oops!

"We didn't realize it was moving that fast," says a chagrined Colin Summerhayes, executive director of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and a member of International Polar Year's steering committee.

CLIMATE TRIGGER

Better make that "Climate Shift".
Like a slowly squeezed trigger, the vast ocean covering three-quarters of this planet absorbs heat very s-l-o-w-l-y. Then BANG! Temperatures jump 10 degrees in 10 to 30 years. Eventually, sea-levels from all that melting ice slosh over every coastline, carrying saltwater on average 300-feet inland for every foot of rise.

At least this is what ice core samples show happened the last time Earth underwent a major warming event. Unlike a stock market downtick, "Mom" stayed overheated for 222,000 years. Temperatures persisted more than 11F above normal. Sea life in an acidic ocean was devastated.

The Runaway Global Warming that happened 55 million years ago was most likely caused by major volcanic eruptions following abrupt tectonic shifts. This time around, our car emissions already exceed those prehistoric volcanic releases...

Put another way, the last time the 95,200 cubic-kilometer Western Antarctic Ice Sheet melted into the ocean, and trees and bushes flourished in Antarctica, atmospheric CO2 concentration was around 400 ppm. Unless we stop adding more CO2 and nitrogen fertilizer emissions to the atmosphere RIGHT NOW, we'll be at 400 ppm by 2020. [Reuters Apr 27/07; AP July 12/06]

The usually reserved Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in England calls this, "Catastrophic".

TILT…

Onboard a planet that is three-quarters
covered by water, sea level rise is a very big deal. With most people, agriculture and industries concentrated near a coastline, a three-foot sea-level rise is considered disastrous. The Wilkins meltdown means that sea levels are going to rise at least 20 feet sometime after 2100.

Or maybe sooner. Invest in life-rafts now, because if the rapidly melting Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets slide into the sea, Mother Ocean will come wading ashore in a slow-motion 200-foot-high tsunami that will not recedes for eons. [Climate, Climate Change 2007; PNAS Vol. 106 No.10]

One other thing: Remove the pivotal weight of the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Earth's rotational axis is expected to shift "rather dramatically" - at least 500 meters. Besides causing everyone caught in the lurch to clutch for handholds, this tilt would tip water from the southern ocean northward. Meanwhile, the bedrock depressed by all that ice will gradually spring back, displacing still more water northward. The result will be sea-levels along the Indian subcontinent and North American seaboard at least 25% higher than current "worst-case" predictions.

No wonder the Obama team is preparing the way for a major "chemtrails" announcement.

But can renewed "aerial obscuration" stop this ongoing meltdown?

CHOKING ON GLOBAL DIMMING

"If we carried on pumping out the particles,
it would have terrible impact on human health, I mean particles are involved in all sorts of respiratory diseases," Dr. Travis continued, referring to everyday air pollution.

He's not kidding. Calling sub-micron particulate pollution the size of aluminum and barium chemtrail chemicals "an extreme human health hazard," the EPA warns that when this tiny airborne fallout evades lung filters and enters the blood stream, it can trigger acute respiratory reactions, high blood pressure, and cause heart attacks within two hours of inhalation. Researchers in Taiwan have documented "a significant increase" in the number of stroke victims when PM pollutant levels rise. [Idaho Observer May/04]

Dr. David Travis could have been referring to chemtrails when this contrails scientist said, "If you fiddle with the balance of the planet, the radiative balance of the planet, you affect all sorts of circulation patterns like monsoons, which would have horrible effects on people. So it would be extremely difficult, in fact impossible, to cancel out the greenhouse effect just by carrying on pumping out particles, even if it wasn't for the fact that particles are damaging for human health."

Don't bother telling this to the people of the Sahel. When the African monsoons failed in 1984, the resulting Ethiopian famine that stunned obese nations was caused by something called "Global Dimming".

Dr. Gerald Stanhill coined this term after finding that between the 1950s and the early 1990s, the solar energy reaching Earth's surface dropped 9% in Antarctica, 10% in the USA, by almost 30% in Russia, and by 16% in parts of the British Isles. [BBC Apr 19/09]

It turns out that air polluted by ground level carbon emissions, high-flying jetliners and chemtrails provides ten-times more particles for small water droplets to form. Acting like mirrors, many small droplets reflect much more sunlight back into space than fewer big ones.

This was before the "Jet Age" - and chemtrails - really took off.

UNHAPPY ANNIVERSARY

"Delivering enough particles from high-flying
aircraft to mitigate warming and further erode Earth's protective solar radiation shielding would take at least 10 years," predicted the 1999 NAS report on climate mitigation.

That anniversary passed last year.

Eleven years after chemtrail "laydowns" began in earnest over the United States, the effects of global warming are accelerating. But scientists like Dr. Peter Cox from the Hadley Centre Meteorological Office are convinced that sunlight-reflecting pollutants of all types have offset global warming with counteractive cooling.

So… as increasingly regulated pollution levels fall, and commercial air traffic dwindles from prolonged economic collapse and resurgent oil prices…

"We're gonna be in a situation unless we act where the cooling pollutant is dropping off while the warming pollutant is going up, CO2 will be going up and particles will be dropping off and that means we'll get an accelerated warming. We'll get a double whammy, we'll get reducing cooling and increased heating at the same time," Cox warns.

Is this why many observers have been reporting increased chemtrail activity over many North American locations? Is this why the Obama White House is coming closer to "outing" chemtrails?

What are you doing to reduce carbon emissions at home, at work - and in-between - right now?
