The Global Consciousness Project: Meaningful Correlations in Random Data

The Global Consciousness Project
Meaningful Correlations in Random Data

The Global Consciousness Project is an international collaboration of scientists, engineers, and artists. We maintain a global network that has been collecting data continuously since 1998 from sensitive instruments which produce random sequences.

Our purpose is to examine subtle correlations and structure in the data that seem to reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. Looking at major global events including both tragedies and celebrations, we have learned that when millions of us share thoughts and emotions the GCP network shows correlations. We interpret this as evidence for interconnections at a deep, unconscious level. An implication is that we are part of a growing global consciousness or oneness. From a CBS2 news item recorded by Brian Keefe in July 2005.

The Global Consciousness Project, also called the EGG Project, is an international, multidisciplinary collaboration of scientists, engineers, artists and others. We collect data continuously from a global network of physical random number generators located in 65 host sites around the world. The archive contains more than 10 years of random data in parallel sequences of synchronized 200-bit trials every second.

Our purpose is to examine subtle correlations that may reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. We predict structure in what should be random data, associated with major global events. When millions of us share intentions and emotions the GCP/EGG network data show meaningful departures from expectation. This is a powerful finding based in solid science.

Subtle but real effects of consciousness are important scientifically, but their real power is more direct. They encourage us to help make essential, healthy changes in the great systems that dominate our world. Large scale group consciousness has effects in the physical world. Knowing this, we can use our full capacities for creative movement toward a conscious future.

The Institute of Noetic Sciences provides a logistical home for the GCP. It is directed by Roger Nelson from his home office in Princeton, but is not a project of Princeton University.

This website is large and complex. It uses frames and plain html. Navigation is facilitated by two menus, and requires liberal use of your back button. The Main Menu links to details of the scientific experiment. The Aesthetics menu points to artistic perspectives, applications, stories, and more. In the top frame are multi-link buttons that connect to facilities suggested by their names. Return to the homepage and menus by clicking on the Project name.

Media Information

The Global Consciousness Project (GCP) does not have a physical laboratory, but exists in the virtual space of the Internet. It is directed from Roger Nelson's home office, with logistical support from the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The Project is a volunteer collaboration involving about 100 researchers, analysts, and egg hosts. Some of us work at universities or institutes in various parts of the world, but these institutions are not funding sponsors or responsible hosts of the project. In particular, this project is not sponsored by Princeton University. Our funding comes from private donations given by a number of contributors

Descriptions

A short and readable introductory article (2009) is in EdgeScience magazine, published by the Society for Scientific Exploration. An interesting overview from an outsider's perspective is presented in a summary by Scott Kelly. You can get a quick intro via a 3-minute news item from CBS New York on YouTube. There are a number of other YouTube pieces, including an hour-long lecture by Peter Bancel, at GCP Videos

The descriptive material about the project has been written over a period of years. It is correct, but much of the material is dated. A One Page Summary is available, though it too is inevitably out of date since the GCP is a dynamic project. For current work, keep your eye on the "What's New" block on the home page, and on the update blog. A description of the project's development can be found in the EGG Story, written in 2002, or by following links from the homepage. Some of the most frequent questions, including skeptical commentaries, are discussed in the FAQ

Articles and Publications

Articles and technical papers have been published in several peer-reviewed venues. A detailed article describing methods and procedures and summarizing the first two years of results, was published in the Journal of Parapsychology in 2001. A preprint is available for download as a pdf file (2 MB). A more recent article in the Journal of Scientific Exploration summarizes 9 years of data: The GCP Event Experiment. A paper on the role of Emotions in the GCP is available. A technically robust analysis of the September 11 2001 results has been published in Foundations of Physics Letters, and the page-proof is available as a pdf file (1 MB). Two related articles are in Volume 16, Number 4, (Winter 2002) of the Journal of Scientific Exploration. These and some less technical articles are included in an annotated list of recent publications

Radio, TV, Internet

We occasionally are the subject of news or media specials. Recent samples: A Time Magazine article by Science writer Michael Lemonick, May 30 2005 (this is a 700 Kb pdf file). A news segment by Correspondent Brendan Keefe, CBS 2 News May 13 2005. (a 3.3 Mb mp3 file). You can see this on Youtube and also on on CBS 2's website

An excerpt from an interview by Gabriella Szilagyi for Hungarian TV on YouTube gives a basic introduction to the project. March 23 2006: Garvin Thomas and Dean Smith, KNTV, San Francisco, did a special report, titled "The Science of Connecting Mind Over Matter" linked at NBC11.com. It may be buried there, but a zipped, realplayer version is available (but huge, 300mb) here. A more comprehensive piece was done by Discovery Canada, Daily Planet Show June 2004 (a RealPlayer stream). Also from Canada is an hour-long interview by Bernice Landry on the CBC Ideas show in wma format.

An mp3 version is available (100 Mb). An interview in April 2007 by Kala Ambrose for Explore Your Spirit is available (48 Mb mp3). The GCP is logistically part of the IONS research program, and there are some Teleseminar Interviews on the Shift in Action part of the IONS website.
Dr. Roger Nelson is the author of most pages and analytical presentations on the GCP site proper. All materials on the website are under Copyright © by Roger Nelson for the Global Consciousness Project.
