The Occult

The Occult

Colin Wilson

…“When I am confronted by danger or crisis, I see it as a threat to freedom, and my freedom suddenly becomes positive and self-evident –as enormous and obvious as a sunset. Similarly, a man who is violently in love feels that if he could possess the girl, his freedom would be infinite; the delight of union would make him undefeatable. When he gets her, the whole thing seems an illusion; she is just a girl…

I have always accepted the fundamental reality of freedom. The vision is not an illusion or a mirage. In that case, what goes wrong?

The trouble is the narrowness of consciousness. It is as if you tried to see a panoramic scene through cracks in a high fence, but were never allowed to look over the fence and see it as a whole. And the narrowness lulls us into a state of permanent drowsiness, like being half anaesthetised, so that we never attempt to stretch our powers to their limits. With the consequence that we never discover their limits. William James stated, after he had breathed nitrous oxide, ‘our normal waking consciousness… is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different’.

…‘One day I believe man will have a sixth sense – a sense of the purpose of life, quite direct and uninferred.’ And in 1968 I wrote in a novel entirely devoted to the problem of Faculty X, The Philosopher’s Stone;

‘The will feeds on enormous vistas; deprived of them, it collapses.’ And there again is the absurd problem of freedom. Man’s consciousness is as powerful as a microscope; it can grasp and analyse experience in a way no animal can achieve. But a microscopic vision is narrow vision. We need to develop another kind of consciousness that is the equivalent of the telescope.

This is Faculty X. And the paradox is that we already possess it to a large degree, but are unconscious of possessing it. It lies at the heart of all so-called occult experience. It is with such experience that this book is concerned…

Primitive man believed the world was full of unseen forces… The Age of Reason said that these forces had only ever existed in man’s imagination; only reason could show man the truth about the universe. The trouble was that man became a thinking pygmy, and the world of the rationalists was a daylight place in which boredom, triviality and ‘ordinariness’ were ultimate truths.

But the main trouble with human beings is their tendency to become trapped in the ‘triviality of everydayness’… in the suffocating world of their personal preoccupations. And every time they do this, they forget the immense world of broader significance that stretches around them. And since man needs a sense of meaning to release his hidden energies, this forgetfulness pushes him deeper into depression and boredom, the sense that nothing is worth the effort… the drama of the rationalist suffocating in the dusty room of his personal consciousness, caught in the vicious circle of boredom and futility. Faust’s longing for the ‘occult’ is the instinctive desire to believe in the unseen forces, the wider significances, that can break the circuit. -

The Occult, by Colin Wilson

This book was on almost every hippie’s bookshelf in the 1970s and has all but disappeared from the radar of modern so-called ‘consciousness’. These excerpts are from the preface and introduction. If you haven’t read the rest you can probably still find a copy.

Always buy second-hand if you can! Pluck the priceless pearls from the crapheap and recycle to save the planet from destruction – and salvage your consciousness from the tawdry, straight, square, materialist claims of orthodoxy’s knowledge of ‘reality’. Turn on, tune in – and OPT OUT of this destructive pseudo-civilization – while you have the chance! Freedom is real. Illusions of control and security are maintained to keep the fearful and unenlightened slave workers running on pointless treadmills toward the grave.

‘You can be free when you retire!’ What a bad joke! You’re free now! Seize your birthright now, before it’s stolen by time, insecurity, age, fear, forgetfulness – and the crass lies of ‘ leaders’, ‘teachers’ and ‘priests’. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. Drop out of the materialist illusion and become an immortal hero today. Laugh aloud at the new clothes of your ‘rulers’. Point out the blind nakedness of your ‘religious instructors’. Stop giving them your time and money. Save yourself and the planet. Do it now.

Thou art God! You are immortal consciousness peering through the cracked shell of NOW!

 Remember what you’re here for?

No Reincarnation Without Permission

No Reincarnation Without Permission

In a move which would be comical if it were not so serious, the Chinese Communist Party has brought in new rules to apparently " Completely Control" Buddhism in Tibet and keep it under Communist control.

The new rules which come into force on September the 1st state that "Lamas are no longer allowed to reincarnate with out first obtaining permission from the communist authorities".

Such permission might be hard to obtain from an atheist official in advance and no doubt what the rules really mean is that all official recognition of a particular incarnation can only be obtained from the communist party.

Obviously the CCP wishes to appoint it's own to every position of authority within Tibetan Buddhism, Just as it has tried to do in the case of the current Panchen Lama, who was abducted 12 years ago at the age of 6 and has not been heard from since.
The Communist Party has already announced that they will select the new Dalai Lama from inside Tibet. However the Dalai Lama has stated on many occasions that his next incarnation will be born outside Tibet, in a free country unless an acceptable resolution to the Tibet Issue has been agreed.
The Web Site of the Chinese Communist Party said:

"If there is any self-claimed Living Buddha without government and religious affairs department approval, this said reincarnation would be illegal and invalid".
The Chinese government has long insisted that it must have the final say over the appointment of the most senior Tibetan monks. In 1995, the Dalai Lama and Chinese authorities chose rival reincarnations of the 10th Panchen Lama, who died in 1989. After the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama is the most important figure in Tibetan spiritual hierarchy, and will identify the next Dalai Lama, when the current one, now 72 years old, dies. As a result, Beijing could control the eventual selection of the fifteenth Dalai Lama. Religious freedom in Tibet is strictly limited by the Chinese government. While some religious practices are tolerated, officials forcibly suppress activities viewed as vehicles for political dissent or advocacy of Tibetan independence. Possession of pictures of the Dalai Lama can lead to imprisonment, and Religious Affairs Bureaus continue to control who can study religion in Tibet.

Only boys who sign a declaration rejecting Tibetan independence, expressing loyalty to the Chinese government, and denouncing the Dalai Lama are allowed by Chinese officials to become monks. In a move which has been noted across the world China has sacked all or nearly all ethnic Tibetans from all government positions in the occupied state of Tibet.

Some 10,000 or more ethnic Tibetans have unceremoniously been sacked with immediate effect today leaving phones unanswered and offices empty.
China has called on volunteers from Han areas to replace the ethnic Tibetans and have apparently received 10,000 or more volunteers from across Han areas.
It is hard to escape the conclusion that China is attempting to eradicate all Tibetans from any position of real authority in Tibet and read this as further evidence of the "Cultural Genocide" that His Holiness has warned faces Tibetans in the coming years. China Claims to have peacefully liberated Tibet and to have freed the people.

60 years later 6,000 monasteries have been bombed and destroyed, 1.5 million out of a total of 6 million slaughtered and all Ethnic Tibetans have been removed from any pretence of authority.

Tibetans are outnumbered in Lhasa by Han Chinese and the Tibetan language is actively discriminated against.

Not only that but China now requires all Incarnations of important Lama's to be verified by the Atheist Communist Beijing officials, laughable if it were not so serious.

Tibetan People are facing a serious attempt to annihilate their culture and people, by the Communists.

Fire from seawater claim lights up the web

Fire from seawater claim lights up the web

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So I was naturally sceptical when I heard about the claims being made by an inventor in the US that he has found a way to burn seawater.

Yep, that's burn as in set fire to.
John Kanzius says he stumbled across the method by accident while experimenting with a machine he had invented to test a new cancer treatment. The machine zaps tumours with radio waves.

In one test, he aimed the radio waves at salt water in a test tube. Instead of boiling away as he expected, the water gave off a gas that burst into flame when ignited. Scientists who have examined the experiment say the gas is probably hydrogen which forms when water dissociates into its constituent parts.

The surprise is how it forms. The thinking is that the radio waves somehow weaken the bonds that hold water molecules together. But how this happens and why only in salt water is a mystery. Kanzius himself is staying tight-lipped about the details of the process while he applies for a patent.

Supposing that this explanation is right, the big question is whether the burning generates more energy than it takes to make the radio waves. That may take some time to determine and for the moment, even Kanzius says he cannot be sure either way.

But he has built an engine that runs on the heat generated by this process and suggests that it could be possible to power a car in this way.

If he's right, Kanzius is sitting on one the most disruptive discoveries of the century. And the news is now sweeping the web as videos sharing sites have started
hosting videos such as this one.

But I've seen too many claims of miracle power sources to be swept away by this one. I'll hope for the best, but until Kanzius produces the peer-reviewed evidence to back up his extraordinary claims, my scepticism will remain.

Perception

Perception
http://www.moillusions.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/bigfoot.jpg

One of the most important relationship lessons I learned was this: The relationships we have with other people are projections of the relationships we have within ourselves. Our external relationships and our internal relationships are in fact the same relationships. They only seem different because we look at them through different lenses.

Let’s consider why this is true. Where do all your relationships exist?

They exist in your thoughts. Your relationship with another person is whatever you imagine it to be. Whether you love someone or hate someone, you’re right. Now the other person may have a completely different relationship to you, but understand that your representation of what someone else thinks of you is also part of your thoughts. So your relationship with someone includes what you think of that person and what you believe s/he thinks of you. You can complicate it further by imagining what the other person thinks you think of him/her, but ultimately those internal representations are all you have.

Even if your relationships exist in some objective reality independent of your thoughts, you never have access to the objective viewpoint. You’re always viewing your relationships through the lens of your own consciousness. The closest you can get to being objective is to imagine being objective, but that is in no way the same thing as true objectivity. That’s because the act of observation requires a conscious observer, which is subjective by its very nature.

At first it might seem troublesome that you can never hope to gain a truly accurate, 100% objective understanding of your relationships. You can never escape the subjective lens of your own consciousness. . That doesn’t stop people from trying, but such attempts are in vain. If you fall into the trap of trying to think of your relationships as objective entities that are external to you, you’ll be using an inescapably inaccurate model of reality. Consequently, the likely outcome is that you’ll frustrate yourself to no end when it comes to human relationships. You’ll make relating to other people a lot harder than it needs to be. Intuitively you may know something is off in your approach to relationships, but you’ll remain stuck until you realize that every relationship you have with another person is really a relationship that exists entirely within yourself.

Fortunately, once you embrace the subjective nature of relationships, you’ll have a much easier time relating to people. It’s easier to get where you want to go when you have an accurate map. The subjective view of relationships implies that you can change or improve your relationships with others by working on the internal relationships within yourself. Furthermore, you can improve your internal relationships, such as your self-esteem, by working on your relationships with others. Ultimately it’s all the same thing.

It can be hard to admit that your complaints about others are really complaints about yourself, but the upside is that your relationship issues reveal where you still need to grow. Consequently, a fantastic way to accelerate your personal growth is to build relationships with others. The more you interact with others, the more you learn about yourself.

I believe the true value of human relationships is that they serve as pointers to unconditional love. According to the subjective model, when you forgive, accept, and love all parts of yourself, you will forgive, accept, and love all other human beings as they are. The more you improve your internal relationships between your thoughts, beliefs, and intentions, the more loving and harmonious your human relationships will become. Hold unconditional love in your consciousness, and you’ll see it reflected in your reality.

Beyond Feudal Freedoms

Beyond Feudal Freedoms

The globe of the Earth is the Real Estate. We draw imaginary arcs around its myriad bounties and parcel them up between us. We draw lines and fences, walls and barriers of language, race, religion, custom and patronage and say ‘don’t cross this imaginary line’. We kill or imprison or deport any brave or foolhardy enough to try. We invent notional nations and countries with no more real legitimacy than football teams, based on the past conquests of barbarians and egomaniacs.

Land is the first mother and the planet Earth is the homeland of us all.  Now we live in a global city, a world economy, a shared genepool and common heritage of billions. The price of land rises everywhere in our false economies based on endless growth and the destructive right of economic might. People think they’re becoming wealthier as they price themselves and their children out of a worthwhile existence and they pay for once free and plentiful natural benefits that mindless greed and profligacy has made scarce. Rents and rates and charges rise to the point where life is not living, where people have to struggle to survive, even in the wealthiest countries of the early third millennium. The basic cost of living – land itself – doesn’t just rise in cities; any place with water and forest is beginning to be highly valued, often for all the wrong reasons and in all the wrong, greedy, pig-ignorant ways.

And yet this is a world of intelligence, automation and power, of transport, organisation, social, political, education and communication systems unparalleled in human history. With all the skills at our disposal is a ‘modernised’ version of feudal hierarchies the best we can do? Are the pointless regimentations and archaic self-serving hierarchies good enough to satisfy our evolving sense of justice and fair play any more?

So much of the fossilised organisations of our civilizations are based on imperial, militaristic mind-sets that must be discarded like last millennium’s battle armor. We live in a world where clean and ‘free’ energy is available – not just slightly cheaper energy, but freely flowing when easily built capture and storage structures are in place. Energy is power and power is what it takes to raise ourselves up the evolutionary spiral of real prosperity to a world where everyone has free healthcare, inexpensive, energy efficient and comfortable shelter, cheap, clean mineral-rich food and pure water and where all the old, the young and the and needy are looked after with good social security benefits and everyone is free and empowered enough to live in peace. We can create a world where one of our major dilemmas is to wonder what to do with all our free time. We can do it today if we simply give up the hypnotic thrall of false patriotism and stop making weapons of war. We can divert all that money, time, inventiveness and energy to really interesting and useful ends. Otherwise we’ll have to wait a lot longer than tomorrow.

New generations are rising, blinking in the grandeur of a new dawn where peace is not only possible - but has become the norm for decades around an ever more prosperous globe. A new Renaissance is coming, whatever we do. We can be and create everything we can dream of – if we do it with wisdom and compassion. Billions of people all want the same simple things. We want to be free to be ourselves and share lives free of needless burdens with our loved ones. We want to be happy and be allowed to pursue whatever lifestyle and means of ‘work’ that fulfils us and provides for our needs – whatever time-filling contribution to the prosperity, wisdom and wit of Humanity we feel impelled to engage ourselves in, so long as it harms no-one. We want to love and be loved. We want to regenerate and live in a healthy world where we can breathe the air, drink the water and eat the food without the real fear of shortening our lives with military or industrial grade poisons.

People spend far more of their time working to have shelter, food, water and other essentials (not to mention a whole swathe of superfluous and irresistibly addictive luxuries) that their ‘primitive’ ancestors did in village communities. In these ‘modern times’ workers often spend as much time at work and commuting as feudal serfs did on mid-second millennium farms – and they usually pass on less land to their children. But the changes that have already arrived mean that people are no longer defined by their jobs, which have a tendency to slip out from under them or transform into hitherto unimaginable forms. We can all experience a myriad of experiences and skills in today’s world – if we settle for reduced security and conditions, wages and freedom.

Same old same old in a land where people pay money so they can vote for whom to banish from the island, or the quasi-existence of a universally loved Big Brother. Instead of learning how to accept more people into the circle of our shared horizon – which we’ll all have to do if we go on having more than one baby each – we’re practicing the mindset that leads to death camps and firing squads. It all starts with calls to patriotism and salutations to flying totemic banners and we all know where it ends. It all ends in tears.

So let’s not go down that path. Let’s aim for the stars and we may achieve Mars – and a healthy planet Earth. Let’s dream of a world where we can grow progressively smarter, healthier, more compassionate, with long enough lifespans to learn how to become the kind of humanity we all want to be. Let’s heal the planet and get into each other’s art, food, music and cultures. It’s not as if we have much of a choice in the matter. We’re already becoming a global hegemony of ever more enlightened beings living in an ever-expanding exotic chaotic mix of dreams and values, beliefs and isms, technologies and miracles. We’re going to meld and live and love together or we’re going to be an extinct species of hairless ape.

We have a rare and probably narrow window of opportunity while the world is buoyed on a bubble of prosperity to start a whole new ball game. We can kick out the bums who want to rule us, whether in the name of god, ideology or efficiency. We can all decide for ourselves. As Brian of Nazareth said, ‘We’re all individuals.’ Those of us who want to can even ultimately cross the Great Water and pioneer new spaces and places in the cosmos. We have no idea what we’re capable of doing and becoming if we can drop our falsehoods and fears and get on with having a great time in this, the best of all possible worlds. We can become immortal wise weavers of endless possibility on a verdant green planet, creating, nurturing, building and bringing to flower a really wonderful world and Humanity.

It’s easy to lose sight of that when you’re in an office or school or a gutter or mine or shop or some other dark satanic money-making mill of Mammon. They’re designed to make you forget your real heritage and lose sight of the glorious, fleeting, pulsating here and now - for the tenuous fear-driven promise of tomorrow’s brief moment of rest. It’s easy to forget that you were born free – and that you still are, right now. It’s easy to remember, too. All it takes is to wake up and really take a look at the absurd structures and fossilised patterns all around you, clogging up everyone’s lives with control-freak crap. Then you can keep your eyes on the real prize – the freedom to use time as you will. It’s a freedom that money’s bright promise never really brings, that slips through the fingers of the powerful overlord and time-serving wage slave alike. The tyrannical class, caste and power systems of old can only perpetuate terror and inequality. We’ll do far better in the third millennium. We’ll invent something different for a change. You can bet on it.

It’s never too late to turn on, tune in and opt out. The younger you decide to change the easier it is and the sooner you start the younger you’ll be when you do.

Time appears to flow on…
